'I Thought I Was Dying': Avril Lavinge's Health Crisis Revealed
Rumours have been swirling for months about the mysterious disappearance of Avril Lavigne. Months later, the singer reveals her health crisis to People magazine.
Heading to Las Vegas with friends in October 2014, Lavigne was supposed to be celebrating her 30th birthday, but was unable to leave her room due to an undiagnosed illness.
"I could barely eat, and when we went to the pool, I had to leave and go lie in bed," she told the magazine. "My friends asked, 'What's wrong?' I didn't know."
Following months of feeling lethargic and lightheaded, the Canadian-born singer-songwriter was diagnosed with a severe case of Lyme Disease.
"I had no idea a bug bite could do this," she says. "I was bedridden for five months."
Looking back, Lavigne believes she was bitten sometime last Spring. "I felt like I couldn't breathe, I couldn't talk and I couldn't move," she says. "I thought I was dying."
Recuperating at her Ontario home, Avril's mom moved in to take care of her, while husband Chad Kroeger, 40, stopped in between breaks during his tour with Nickelback.
"There were definitely times I couldn't shower for a full week because I could barely stand," she says. "It felt like having all your life sucked out of you."
Opening up about her recovery, Avril says one thing that helped her get through was her fans.
"They were asking about me since I was MIA, so I mentioned to one fan directly that I wasn't feeling good," Avril says, referencing last December's viral direct message from Twitter. "The get-well messages and videos they sent touched me so deeply. I lay in bed watching them and cried so much because I felt loved."
After her long recovery, the singer says she's "80 per cent better," and is ready to release new music. Her new single "Fly" will be released this month in support of the 2015 Special Olympics.
"This was a wake-up call," says Lavigne. "I really just want to enjoy life from here on out."
Lavigne isn't the only celebrity to struggle with Lyme Disease, "Real Housewives of Vancouver" star Yolanda Foster has been very vocal about her battle. To find out more about Lyme Disease, head over to the Canadian Lyme Disease Foundation's website.
