I beg to differ. Dragging out and recycling unsubstantiated gossip seems the antithesis of a place like BA. Evan was quoted saying she was a song writing machine. All the disgruntled ex wannabe's who never achieved what she did don't sway me. No matter who did what, she has song writing credits on all her stuff. That's something they don't just give away. And no matter who contributed what to her songs, she brought her own unique style to the melody, which is that undefinable "it" factor that made her a star, and Butch and Chantel has beens.

You must be joking. Ask BA what the solution to 2+2 is and we'd probably find something to gossip and speculate about. However I don't think this is one of those instances. With respect, common sense tells you that Avril had a lot of help with writing her first album. Music - especially mainstream 'pop' music - is essentially a business, and you don't leave a big commercial opportunity like that in hands of an inexperienced songwriter. Again, no one is saying that Avril can't write songs. Evan's hyperbole was technically correct. No one is saying she sat around twiddling her thumbs while LG was being worked on, or anything else for that matter. And she most definitely had her own style, but that's exactly what was being marketed at the time. And with marketing comes a lot of bullshit that you have to take with a grain of salt.

Damn, and all this time I thought this was a fan site! I'm rather disappointed with this whole thread. Trashing Avril? Doubting Avril? Accusing Avril?? WTF. Folks, give her credit for being savvy enough to convince the label to let her "write" songs. Jesus people, that's where the real money is. And why she's worth $50 million. You weren't during the "good old times" between 2007 and 2011, when there were straight up haters, more like former fans turned into haters because of her "change". This thread is nothing compared to those times. After that, things settled down and now only a few old fans come back (me included), but we don't "kiss Avril ass" like a fan is "supposed" to do. We're not saying that Avril did nothing, but you can tell she was heavily helped and supported by a good team of songwriters, managers and label executives. I'm sure she did what she wanted to do for the most part and we should give her credit because of that, but we shouldn't give her all the credit like people thought back then when she said "I write my own songs", which was very well calculated overstatement to sell her image of "alternative" girl against Britney, Christina, etc. In my opinion a good supporter/fan (whether it's music or another thing) should be able to be constructively critical. You don't have to say "yes" to everything she does/says, you can have your own tastes/opinions and not necessarily agree with hers. Of course, people who is constantly negative and critical and doesn't like anything she does nowadays (and even says "I miss the old Avril") doesn't count and shouldn't be on a forum/website dedicated to something they don't like anymore. I mean, I don't like Britney Spears music since 2007 and you won't see me going to Britney's fansites to bitch about it. But luckily, those people have moved on for the most part and don't come here anymore.

Yeah that's just one of many reasons why I love BA, especially over other fan sites of other artists, because we actually can be objective here and have differing opinions instead of pretending like we love everything she says and does and no one jumps down your throat if you say you don't like something. It's ok to be objective and give fair criticism if it's deserved and in this case we're looking at facts that prove whether Avril was as involved with writing her debut as she said or not. It beats the millionth discussion about her hair or the other kind of petty stuff we used to argue about here.

I feel like she was very involved with Unwanted. The lyrics in that song match with the style of a lot of the lyrics on UMS so I think there was truth in her saying Cliff Magness gave her a lot of control over the lyrics, at least in some songs

I am confused as to what she is able to do as far as song writing. Here with the song breakaway. 2 different stories on the same song.. Her manager in 2000 pushed for her to get song writing credits and to have input in a song. You also have to think that when a song is written the singer has to put it in there range as for if they can sign it and transverse from one word to the other smoothy.
this was in a interview about a song writer Avril came over to write with us,’ she said. ‘Avril talked about her life and what things were important to her ‘ she was the inspiration for the song. Matthew began creating the melody and track, and I started working on the lyrics. I remember staying in bed for three days, writing 25 versions of the lyric. I love being in bed and writing lyrics, and having my dog Jet and my kitty Dash on the bed. Anyway, we finally finished the lyric, then we completed the demo.’
As it turned out, ‘Breakaway’ didn’t quite fit for Lavigne’s album, and other artists passed on the song before it was eventually placed with Clarkson, and featured in the soundtrack to the Disney film, The Princess Diaries 2. ‘I want to credit Mitchell Leib (President, Music & Soundtracks, Walt Disney Pictures & Television) for helping to make this song a hit,’ said Benenate. ‘Mitchell was a big believer in this song – he placed it the film and got it to Kelly Clarkson.’
this was in a song fact about the song Gerrard explained to Songwriter Universe Magazine: "The song was originally written for Avril (Lavigne), it was inspired by her. As it turned out, it wasn't quite right for Avril's album, so we pitched it to Kelly Clarkson. It all worked out great. Kelly sounds great singing it, and it was a big hit for us."
Avril Lavigne wrote the lyrics to this song, which she worked on with professional songwriters Matthew Gerrard and B. Beneate. It was intended for Lavigne's second album, Under My Skin, but she didn't think it fit the album and let Clarkson record it as a single. The song did so well that at the last minute, Clarkson's second album was renamed Breakaway and this song was included on it. >>

I think that where Avril got writing credit from was the part where the other writers said she told them about her life and what was important to her and that's what they based the song on. She probably talked about her dreams of leaving her small town and making it big, etc. She mentioned in school she used to daydream a lot about being a singer (I'd just stare out my window, dreaming of what could be). So I doubt Avril actually wrote any of the lyrics but she inspired them by telling her life story so in that instance it makes sense why they would give her at least a little credit because she was the inspiration behind the lyrics and story of the song.
Kind of like how Taylor Swift gave credit on Ronan to the boy's mom because she wrote the song based off her blogs but obviously the mom didn't sit in a room with Taylor and write a song with her. But it was appropriate to give her credit because she based the song off of her writings.
