I don't know how these performances usually go but the only one I've ever seen is Taylor's and I was kind of expecting Avril's to be somewhat like hers. I just love that Taylor accompanied herself for the whole performance. All the songs were from her latest album at the time. She told the story of each song and what it means to her. Her vocals were on point, she seemed so passionate about what she was playing and like she took it seriously.
Avril just seemed like she didn't take it seriously. It's cool that she left half the set up to fan requests but she just ended up playing old singles we've already heard a thousand times. She was totally unprepared to play anything other than the 3 songs she has memorized. Warrior was downright embarrassing. Thankfully her vocals sounded mostly on point. But I thought her outfit was too casual for such an event. I had hoped she'd accompany herself maybe for at least one song, but she relied heavily on the band. She just came across as really unprofessional in this showcase and like she was unprepared.
I can't stand some people brushing it off like "ShE's HuMaN, sHe 4gETs tHe WoRds liKe evEry11111" Not knowing the lyrics for a song she was asked to play at the last minute is understandable, but in the future she should know the lyrics to her songs. Like... it's her job? Maybe take this seriously? I don't know, I don't find it funny or cute when that happens. It is human for it to happen on occasion, but with her it's like a consistent issue. She just comes across as lazy and unprofessional in a lot of her performances lately. It's like she hasn't grown or developed as an artist or performer in the last 10 years. Her performances and attitude about her career were better in TBDT era when she was freakin' only 23 years old. It's like she's gone backwards. You can't compare artists but meanwhile I look at Taylor in interviews and her performances and it's like night and day. I wish Avril would just put even 1/4 the effort Taylor does.

That’s exactly what I tried to say in a post on the other thread but you said it much better.

If you check out other performers they also dressed casual. Taylor just went for the timeless chic look. Avril came from a skate park in 04. Both are very on brand.

Didn’t know that, thanks!
Maybe part of it is my own fault for only watching Taylor and we all know she sets the gold standard. I just assumed everyone’s performances would be somewhat like hers.

I agree with your comment. If its work, being professional and caring for your work should be the standard. Also, thanks to Dillon for putting the BBC Radio1 videos.

Taylor's Grammy Museum set >>>> Avril's Grammy set There, I said it. I love Avril but I have to agree with you. I still watch Taylor‘s performance from time to time because I really enjoy it.

Well the thing that I really love about Taylor’s set is that it wasn’t just a rendition of the same songs we’ve heard done the same way. She accompanied herself on all the instruments and arranged the songs in new ways. Like playing Blank Space and HYGTG on acoustic guitar when they’re both originally electropop songs, Wildest Dreams on electric guitar which made it sound super different from the original, and OOTW on piano and turning it into a ballad. She took these songs that had a lot of slick pop production and stripped them down and it made them sound totally different. There was nothing exciting or new or innovative about Avril’s set, it was just an acoustic set of songs we already know and we’ve heard her do MHE and GF acoustic before.

From what I've seen, the performance is kind of left to the artist. Shawn had a full band. Taylor set a high standard by doing it solo and playing 3 different instruments. A7X did their first ever acoustic set plus added strings. Grace Vanderwaal sat with an acoustic guitar and had another player (I had hoped Avril would have looked as together as her). Avril obviously didn't give her performance much thought. And that's bad when she's about to head on tour. I just think this was her chance to showcase how amazing her new material is in an intimate setting. She does not need to cater to casual fans when she still has many die hard fans who follow her new music. She is classifying herself as a nostalgic artist at this point...I can go on but this is Taylor's thread 😬
One more thing, Taylor giving a little background for every song was something she only did. All I gotta say is she is the standard for every Grammy museum performer, bravo 👏

Especially for a song wich means a lot to her (Warrior) I expected her to at least now the lyrics. It was a bit embarrassing to watch tho. I wonder how her tour goes with new songs. Taylor did amazing at the Grammy museum yes. Avril didn’t look like she was into the song Warrior and that is a bit sad. Maybe she was tho!

I have a new appreciation for Cruel Summer. I now see why people say it's the best next single.

Anyone have opinions about which other Tay songs the tracks on Lover reminds you of? How about sneaky references like “shiny things” in Paper Rings?

For me:
Cruel Summer = Blank Space (no idea why though, lol)
Miss Americana = So It Goes
Paper Rings = Stay Stay Stay
Cornelia Street = Delicate
Daylight = Clean

Hmm I don't see it. However, someone did point out that the outro of Getaway Car transitions perfectly into the intro of Cruel Summer. I do think the two songs are probably related in the storyline.
