Loved her look in 2002 and love it today. Abbey Dawn is god awful ugly though.

I think idolising her style when I was younger made me an actual fan rather than her just being someone whose songs I liked. Now I'm older I don't really think a lot of her style. She's pretty but that never affected anything.

I never really liked her 2002-2004 style. And i started out with hearing her on the radio and cd player.. i first googled her around 2009. So looks didn't really play a factor in me becoming a fan.
But she's good looking. But in my opinion she looks her best 2013->

Like all of you I got to know her through music. I don't like her tomboy looks in 2002-2003 and in the UMS era it was too dark for me. It's not about clothes what makes her attractive to me, but her eyes and her smile do. Like in the Complicated and Sk8er Boi music videos. And that's the same nowadays. She only needs to smile to make her look gorgeous. And as I've seen her live for the first time in 2008 I knew I was absolutey right. So my favourite style is from around 2007-2008 with that pink streak.

For me I went to this super duper preppy elementary school where everyone wore Abercrombie Kids, Gap, blah blah blah you get the point. They all loved Britney Spears and well, I went there because of my grades and not because of my money so I didn't get to wear all of the cool clothes and expensive shit. I remember one instance of a dress down day and I wore this blue shirt that was a button up and it had green on it. The kids made fun of me and said it was snot. When I heard Complicated in 4th grade it was instant, "take off all your preppy clothes." Then I saw a picture of her in Nickelodeon Magazine and a few others and basically I was hooked. Here was someone who went opposite on purpose. In a way it made me feel like I could belong to something or someone so it did have an affect on me.
Now that I think back to it, I'm an emotional mess haha and still in therapy for all of the shit bullying has caused me even now in my 20s. Okay sorry for straying from topic. But Avril is just so much to me and I can't even explain it. When I hear Complicated now I legit cry. Nostalgia mixed with wounds and self doubt are shitty things.

I was on a bus one day and saw a girl that looked a lot like Avril Lavigne on it and I was just messing around on my computer when I got home googling Avril Lavigne and I became a fan so I guess it was her image that first attracted me. I have since become a fan of her music too. I was most impressed by the release of the album "Goodbye Lullaby". Though I was not a fan during the release of her previous albums I like them too.

Awesome thread. For me it's her "joie de vivre" that attracts me the most. Nothing is sexier than a confident enthusiastic woman. She's all that, and more gorgeous because of it.

Interesting to read everyone's story! For me it was the music at first. I was 13 when I heard (and saw the MV) of Complicated and I really liked her style too. I was finding myself and style a bit and I also wanted to dress like her so I started buying neckties and the baggy trousers and such. Since then it's a combination, I'm a straight woman but I do can say she is really gorgeous. Sort of a female crush but not sexually. I'm also since the beginning in love with her hair. She has the hair I always wanted! Her music got me but I must admit she also has a lot of songs wich I can't relate to anymore so I can't wait for new music and see how maturing affects her music. But I will always love her, also when her music isn't connecting with me I know it somehow will over the time cause she's my favorite artist by far I can remember when my mother took my fandom not serious at all and always was saying when I got a boyfriend I will grew out of her, that her music wasn't important anymore. She was SO wrong. I'm living together with my boyfriend for 5 years and he only knew MHE but now he knows almost every name of the songs she has HAHA! My mother still doesn't understand that I'm that die-hard fan. I told her a while ago: Do you remember you always said I wouldn't be a fan anymore when I sort of got settled down? But she still said: Well maybe you didn't find the right man My WHOLE family doesn't understand the fact you can be a die-hard fan of an artist and that music and news, a new single or album can make you SO happy My family alywas laughs a bit and say things like: You're still a fan of her? Well that's a long time.. . Like it's weird that when you're 29 you're still so into her. That fandom is something for teenagers Only you guys understand that ^_^

Nice to read personal stories like this . And yeah, there's definitely at least a little bit of a stigma about being a fan when you're above a certain age (I'm 26) so you're definitely not alone. Maybe that'll be the topic for my next thread

Out looks doesnt have to be sexual appeal, I dont find it necessarily related to it. IMO, out look, in an artistic way, expresses the mood she is on and help us understand the story behind the music and her expreiences befor she made the songs about them. I would say it hints about her art more than drawing attention. Like her look in Let Go, it told she is more than a girl and having some habits normally from boys. The look during UMS, she started wearing dresses which shows that she is back to the roll of being a girl between a relationship but in a negative way bc the red (warning) and black color. Transfering to the TBDT, she exposes her bitchy and edgy psycology with little pink on her hair. Also she wanted to be a beautiful woman by dying her hair to gold. I dont want to continue but this is how her looks told me about her. And I think she can just go natural about it bc that shows her real emotion

It was not about her beauty. It was about the way she used it.
I was tomboyish all my childhood, hated dresses, skirts, hung out with boys, was skating, bicycling etc. Tried to figure out why all the girls wanted acting like glamorous chicks while there's so many cool stuff behind cosmetics, dressing up etc. I wasn't interested in it. I wore baggy clothes cause I appreciated that hip-hop style, it seemed really cool and cosy to me.
When I first had seen Avril (I was 13) it was like HOLLy WoW 😳 how could it real that there's someone with that style like I was among famous and beautiful (she was really beautiful, with her style it impressed me much more). And I'd never listened to music at all before, but thanks to Avril I figured out that expressing yourself by music was really good idea, an started to play the guitar. So now I'm into music with all my heart. I will always remember who's the reason, in spite of everything ( I'm 26 )
And I like natural beauty, I think it's about Avril too

I actually started being an Avril fan only because of her looks, I always liked as a child her beautiful long hair, and in the TBDT era she was probably in her "peak" so that got me into her and drawing her ( because of her cinematic racoon-eye look) and made me discover her music...I still to this day get angry with some of her looks because we all know that is a big factor in the music industry nowadays.
