Avril Lavigne & Circa Survive's Anthony Green's New Song With EDM Duo Grey & Is… Interesting
We haven’t heard new music from Avril Lavigne in two years and her “Here’s to Never Growing Up”-featuring last LP came out all the way back in 2013. Long-running, long-reliable prog-friendly post-hardcore rockers Circa Survive dropped an album last week. But both Avril and angel-voiced Circa frontman Anthony Green came together for “Wings Clipped,” a new track with L.A. production duo Grey -- one of the most intriguing bits in today’s New Music Friday. It opens with finger snaps and mood-setting, melancholy guitar -- a Top 40-friendly move we’ve seen lately from everyone this side of Kygo and the Chainsmokers -- then plows into glitchy, chopped-up bombast made all the more WTF-worthy by some aggro rawk riffs and a hearty “UHHHH” as a big ol’ exclamation point, which we can only hope was provided by Green. A lot of the absurdity comes from knowing the collaborators. Lavigne’s hopped on plenty of contemporary production trends over her long career, and given her notable recent absence, it’s great to have her back singing about existential angst and angels with their wings clipped. And Green, long a cult hero in the emo/punk world, has never contributed to a song even remotely like this. According to our new interview with Grey, Lavigne got on board because she was a fan of the duo's prior work, and from there, she got Green involved. Anyway, here is “Wings Clipped,” off Grey’s new Chameleon EP, out today. Billboard: www.billboard.com/amp/articles/columns/rock/7981814/avril-lavigne-anthony-green-grey-song-wings-clipped
