She was probably more likely courting ideas and melodies, like "I want a song about this, these lines don't represent me, here's a better melody, and change this line to this"

Yeah, that was more the case. Before the matrix somewhat went back on their allegations, they claimed that her involvement in Complicated was limited to changing "crappy clothes" to "preppy" and a couple other menial things.

I don't think that was the original line. I think the original line was "stupid clothes."

This old interesting article mentions the problems with Avril's songwriting participation on Let Go. www.rollingstone.com/music/news/little-miss-cant-be-wrong-20030320I'll put a little part of the article directly here: “Arista was drop-dead shit afraid that I would come out with a whole album that sounded like ‘Unwanted’ and ‘Losing Grip,’” she says. “I swear they wanted to drop me or something. I don't feel like ‘Complicated’ represents me and my ability to write. But without ‘Complicated,’ I bet you anything I wouldn't have even sold a million records. The songs I did with the Matrix, yeah, they were good for my first record, but I don't want to be that pop anymore.”
Avril hinted many times in the Let Go era that she wasn't satisfied with Complicated. But I feel that as time went by Avril learned to focus on the positives and take Complicated (and all the Let Go songs that she hadn't been satisfied with) mainly as the song to be grateful for – as the song that started her career and made her dreams come true.

Most of the songs that become huge hits for artists they either had little involvement with or they're nothing super serious and meaningful. Britney wouldn't have gotten anywhere without Baby One More Time and Oops, Ariana without The Way and Problem, Taylor without Love Story and You Belong With Me, Nirvana without Smells Like Teen Spirit, Guns N Roses without Welcome to the Jungle, Miley without We Can't Stop, etc. Most of the time, especially in pop, you need those kinds of catchy pop songs in order to break. And Avril's acknowledged that in the past. Had she done a rock UMS or GL like album on her debut she's right- she wouldn't have probably even sold a million records. She certainly wouldn't have gotten to where she is today without Complicated and Sk8er Boi.

I attended a talk given by Christy and she specifically remembered the word to be "crappy" but I do believe that there's an article from back in the day (Rolling Stone?) where she says "stupid", so who knows! Those songs are important for avril not just because of the success that they eventually achieved, but also because she would have 100% been dropped had they not come into fruition. It seems like that fact is the only thing that most everyone who was involved in her debut project can agree on. Her gratitude for them has grown through the years; she was criticised quite extensively by (allegedly being misquoted) saying that she didn't enjoy playing her old hits, other than IWY and Tomorrow during the UMS era. Now it's hard to get her to want to play anything other than those songs!

No, it doesnt, but I'd put Darlin' over most of LG any day It's a song she wrote herself, and it's quite meaningful and personal. We all know Avril doesn't really like elaborated lyrics, her strengths are more about melodies and how she can make the song with her voice. I think she did a terrific job on that with Darlin, and most of her self-written songs follow that scheme. I seriously can't wait to hear the new self-written material she's been working and will work on, I'm quite sure I won't be disappointed with it

I'd like to know more about it. I remember that Avril and her band said they were bored of playing Complicated at Grammy Awards 2003. But yeah, now Avril seems to enjoy only playing the old hits. She always says that they're the songs that get the crowd excited the most. And that's probably true, considering that not only Avril fans attend her concerts.

I remember her saying "Sometimes I can't stand playing Conplicated", I think this was probably UMS era. And it was pretty obvious when she sang it at the Budokan concert that she was bored out of her mind. But it was pretty understandable, given how many hundreds of times she's sang it and especially in that era she was trying to prove herself as a serious singer/songwriter and wanted to do rock music and Complicated doesn't really go with that.
But in GL era a radio station asked her how she feels about playing her hits and she said "I think it's very important, if you've had hits, to play them in concert." It's so weird to me that in her early career, when she had less songs to play, she didn't like playing her hits. But now with 5 albums worth of songs and after singing those same singles for over 10 years it's all she wants to play. I think if it were me I'd tear my hair out at the thought of playing the same songs for that long.

But is Avril ever saying she personally loves singing the old hits now? Because reading between the lines, it just sounds like she's doing what she feels she's expected to do. The only old song I've heard her say she likes is IWY
