If you have a Windows 10 computer, this is really worth knowing about. It could really help you avoid a lot of headaches. Problem is, when you get this update, it's not enabled by default, they don't explain shit about it and it's not really user friendly. If you need help with it, let me know. Here is an article about it. www.bleepingcomputer.com/news/microsoft/windows-10s-controlled-folder-access-anti-ransomware-feature-is-now-live/Windows system files are protected by default. When I first enabled the feature, here are the folders that were protected on my computer. Of course, you can add folders you want to be protected by this feature. Once you enable it, you have to choose which applications will be allowed to make changes to files in protected folders. This may not be perfect. But, it will definitely make it harder for the bad guys to hold your files for ransom. Not everyone has the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update yet. It's being rolled out in phases, with the newest computers getting it first. To tell if you have this update, click on the start button > settings > system > about. Scroll down to Windows specifications and check which version you have. The Fall Creators Update is version1709. If you don't want to wait to get this update automatically, go to www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 and click Update Now.

Nice. I updated all my machines to the Fall Creators Update a few days ago. It's also a good idea to keep regular (offline) backups 😉

But, it's amazing how many people don't do it. And, there's no reason not to. If you don't have an external hard drive, there is plenty of free cloud storage available.

That's strange the link I originally posted didn't work. It worked when I previewed it.

I didn’t carefully read the entire article because I don’t have the time at 5is given moment but: does the Windows defender need to be enabled to use this or is it just hidden in the defender settings? I‘ve had problems with the defender not working properly and shut it off long ago, using different software to protect my system. But it does sound interesting.

Windows Defender is automatically disabled when you install another anti-virus program. I'm going to guess you will be able to use the 'controlled folder access' feature. I'm about to upgrade a computer that has Avast anti-virus on it. So, I will give you a better answer when I've done that and tested it. Edit for TheRaven : Windows Defender does not have to be enabled to take advantage of this new feature. This function is separate from anti-virus and anti-malware.

If you had it, I think you would know it.
