When Avril Lavigne announced late last year that she was releasing a new album after almost five years out of the limelight because of Lyme disease, we expected to hear an album about her fight. This is exactly what she delivered on the new album, ‘Head Above Water’, which hits stores and streaming platforms worldwide on February 15th 2019. CadernoPop had access to the album two weeks prior to release in order to review it and tell you what we think!
The album had a heavyweight in production and composition with many working on it; Stephan Moccio, Chris Baseford, Johan Carlsson, Lauren Christy, Ryan Cabrera, Travis Clark, Bonnie McKee, JR Rotem and Mitch Allan.
In ‘Head Above Water’, Avril’s sixth album, she escapes everything we know of her from before in ‘Let Go’ and approaches a sound that is deeper than what we hear in ‘Under My Skin’.
The album opens with the title track, ‘Head Above Water’, which we heard for the first time in September last year. In a letter to her fans, Avril details how she felt she was fighting for her life and was begging God to keep her head above water and save her from drowning.
It is a strong feeling of struggle that Avril sings about throughout the album. On ‘Birdie’, second track on the record, Avril keeps the same feelings she expressed in her letter as she talks about feeling like a bird with her wings cut, but still able to express herself by singing.
On ‘I Fell In Love With The Devil’, she recounts the hell that she’s gone through in the last few years and calls upon an angel to take her away and help her.
The next song on the album is ‘Tell Me It’s Over’, which was also released as a single. On this track, Avril leaves her suffering from illness behind and speaks of relationships and the possibility of returning to a broken relationship.
In the first chords of ‘Dumb Blonde’, the song is immediately reminiscent of the worldwide hit ‘Hollaback Girl’ by Gwen Stefani. It is the most upbeat and lively track on the album as she talks about not being just some silly girl.
‘It Was In Me’ is perhaps the most sentimental track on the album. At least, it was the one I liked the most. Avril discusses how she wants to feel high when she is sober and young when she is old in a contradictory, yet catchy chorus. I think it reminded me of ‘Don’t Tell Me’ from the album ‘Under My Skin’ in 2004.
In ‘Souvenir’, Avril returns to talking about troubled relationships and discusses keeping her boyfriend as a souvenir from her travels.
‘Goddess’, with only her voice and a guitar, pleases and portrays the feeling of love taking you out of your body to another place.
The album follows with ‘Bigger Wow’, a track that is most reminiscent of Avril’s debut album, ‘Let Go’.
‘Love Me Insane’ seemed like a repeat of ‘Souvenir’ to begin with and shows Avril’s passionate side as she wants to get mad in love and lose her mind.
‘Warrior’ closes the album the same way that it opened, speaking about her fight against Lyme.
“Because I am a warrior,
I fight for my life like a soldier …
And I will not give up,
I want to survive …
You can not turn me off.” (Translated from Portuguese)
‘Head Above Water’ overall as an album shows a suffering Avril who won a battle who for a while didn’t think we would be hearing anything new soon.
