“Avril Lavigne’s 6th studio album, ‘Head Above Water’, will be released Friday February 15th.
Nação da Música was invited to hear the album and review in advance.
Below, we review the album track by track giving some insights into the twelve songs and this new phase in Avril’s career. She manages to create a good mix of music on a light album, with some emotional tones while still managing to present upbeat songs.
It starts with the title track that has already been released to the public, ‘Head Above Water’. In her lyrics she paints a shocking picture, talking about fighting for her life and refusing to sink below the surface. In the background, a piano accompanies here with some beats. It was a brilliant choice for lead single and for her return to the industry.
‘Birdie’ also starts with piano, but is much more melodic than the previous song, along with a slightly more serious vocal which changes and begins to speed up in the pre-chorus. In the chorus, Avril exposes her range more than before, which is always good, as she talks about freedom and questions how she can escape and fly even higher.
Next up, ‘I Fell In Love With The Devil’. This track has a very beautiful beginning with string instruments, a bass piano and a beat that is similar to a heartbeat. Towards the end, she explores her vocals, reaching high levels and giving a greater intensity to the song.
The second song already released, ‘Tell Me It’s Over’, has a different style in the beginning with a slower sound and more rhythmic verses. The chorus, although having a pop pattern similar to the rest of the album, maintains a more differentiated sound. It is a very good track and stands out on the album.
‘Dumb Blonde’ harks back to Avril Lavigne’s most pop phase, something like ‘Girlfriend’ from her 3rd album or ‘Hello Kitty’ on her latest record. This song brings a dance vibe to the record. She is very lively, giving another side to the record and is extremely captivating throughout.
Returning to the main style of the album, ‘It Was In Me’ comes back with slow verses and piano in the instrumental. Like the others, the chorus enter with a strong and impactful vocal accompanied by a powerful instrumental. At the end, the refrain repeats without the beat in a brilliant and clear way. This song is another very engaging track on the album.
‘Souvenir’ is a relatively short track, under 3 minutes long. It features a strong beat, with a smaller instrumental and more serious verses. In the chorus, she sings about wanting to run away and take the person with her as a souvenir. It is a very good song that stands out and gets stuck in your head.
‘Crush’ has a slower pace, but not in a dramatic way, but in a way that really engages with the lyrics. Both the verses and the chorus are more stripped back and at certain times, her voice almost seems like a soft and low whisper.
Starting with a lighter tone, ‘Goddess’. This track sounds acoustic without much noise and as the guitar stands out in the background. Despite this, it is not slow, the verses and the chorus are fast as Avril once again demonstrates her vocal power.
‘Bigger Wow’ is another catchy song with a striking tone that would fit in well on the radio. She is very lively, with a quick beat and an easy chorus to memorize. It is similar to the rest of the album, but still a very good and attractive track.
‘Love Me Insane’ is a song that talks about the feelings of attraction and love that Avril has felt, describing the ay they met and that the person she sings about is capable of driving her crazy. The rhythm changes between the verses and the chorus, starting slow and growing as she sings.
And as a strong album closer, ‘Warrior’ appears. Just like the title track, it lays out the experiences that Avril has gone through in a gripping manner. She sings about the battles she has lived through, about not giving up and fighting for her life as a warrior. She is undoubtedly one of the best in this new song as it is very poignant and perfect for closing the album.
Ultimately, ‘Head Above Water’ is different from any other music Avril has released. To draw comparisons, it seems a brilliant blend of ‘Goodbye Lullaby’ and ‘Avril Lavigne’. In terms of instrumentals, it is very well produced with many instruments contributing a lot to the quality of the songs. The lyrics add weight and power to the album as a whole. Therefore, this is an album that comes with the things we’ve learned to love and expect from Avril, while also improving and evolving as an artist. Certainly, this is one of her best pieces of work yet.”
