Well, I've listened to the album quite a few times now. This are my thoughts on it. This could change anytime but this is what I'm feeling now:
HEAD ABOVE WATER: This is her best opening track for an album so far. It really represents what she's been through when it all started. She was feeling weak, almost dying. It is a really good song, beautiful vocals and really nice instrumental. The bridge is excellent and I can really feel her pain in the song. I won't say much about it because I've already did that when it first came out. For me is a 5/5.
BIRDIE: Even when the song wasn't out I knew this was going to be one of my fave from the album. The concept behind the song and the metaphor is amazing. The drums, her vocals, the part where she start singing "ohhhh you can't hold me down, no". This part really gives me chills and I am already picturing it live. I have high hopes of it sounding amazing live. I hope she doesnt skip it if there's a tour just because it was produced with Rotem. He really did a great job on it. And yes! This is in my top 5 without a doubt. The productions is really good and the lyrics are simply poetry to my ears. 5/5
I FELL IN LOVE WITH THE DEVIL: I know it is a fan favourite. The production and the writing of the song is almost perfect for being written by herself. She really did a good job on this one. It was a really good improvement from the GL self produced songs. I honestly don't feel it that much. I'm not moved by the lyrics but for the sound. The beginning and the piano are everything for the song, and her voice. Oh god! the background vocals and the chorus where she sings "I feel in love with the devil, I'm underneath his speeeeeeeeeeeeel". wow. I also picture this song being performed live and I can't wait for it. 5/5
TELL ME IT'S OVER: Totally different from what I expected from her. I really like the song. I have said it before when I review it. All the instruments, her voice (except the MV) I like it a lot. I'm really looking forward to listening to this song live in better quality than Live in Ryan's living room. I know it won't let me down next time. But the audio version is 5/5
DUMB BLONDE: I know this song was made with the intention of having something upbeat in the album. Though the lyrics are good and they have a good meaning behind it, I'm not much interested into this kind of songs from her. I've had enough of them from the past eras and now I want more of the raw and slow songs. It is good live, even though she doesn't seem very happy performing it. I know she is happy with the result but this is (IMO) the song she was writing back during the FB live and said it was to make people happy. 4/5
IT WAS IN ME: The song which many of us didn't know what was it about. The title was kinda funny back then but the song has a really and powerful meaning. Even more than many of her past eras. For me this is like I'm with you but looking at oneself strenght. She was searching everywhere but she finally understood that happyness wasn't outside but in her. The sound is good but it could have been better maybe, the bridge is great and her vocals are strong enough to make me feel goosebumps. I almost cried at the end of the song. She really knows how to make me feel proud and strong enough to face my hardest times. 5/5
SOUVENIR: It is really growing on me. I've had the melody and the lyrics of the song going on in my head for the whole day. Even though I'm really into summer romances, the idea behing the idea is good. I feel like this song could have fit in the let go b.sides and it could be really good back in those days. Her voice is quite diverse and the beginning of the song is different from the chorus. I didn't expect the chorus to be like that. But is a good song and is one I wouldn't skip like I did with some of her previous eras like SOS or Bitchin' summer. Nothing against them, just didn't felt them. Also I'm a little tired of her saying "wish you were here". For me is a 4/5
CRUSH: After all the people commenting on this song before the album release, I wasn't sure if it is was going to be a good song but god damn! F*ck people reviewing the song from snippets. I knew I had to wait and it blew me! This is a song which is really different like TMIO and the lyrics are awesome. I'm in love with them and the song also made me cry a little bc it reminded me of the time I met my boyfriend and how I felt the first time we met. This is also one of my favourites so far. I like this Avril that is not afraid of opening her heart and most of all, that isn't afraid of trying new music genre. I would love to have this song on my wedding day and dance along with it. ♥ 5/5
GODDESS: The beginning of the song reminds me of "Your love is a lie" from Simple Plan. The acoustic guitar gives me that vibe. I wasn't really expecting this song to be good but like Crush it was a surprise for me. Something different but with an Avrilish sound. I'm also looking forward to listening live. Not my fave on the album but again, I enjoy listening to it and I also cant get the lyrics out of my head. It is 5/5 for me. I'm happy she feels like this and that she is treated like she deserves after being in such a toxic relationship with Rotem. We can't hide it or doubt it anymore. He was destroying her from the inside.
BIGGER WOW: Again, I have the feeling this song could have been included in the Let go era, like a b-side. It's a bop. I can't stop singing it. Even though it has simple lyrics, the sound is good and the melody is very catchy. Her voice sounds good, different but good. I have the feeling that she has been trying different sound and that she was playing with her voice and found that she could really sing with different vocal ranges. Not my fave and I felt like the song is quite short but enjoyable. 4/5
LOVE ME INSANE: I don't know if this song is really a filler or what. It may grow on me later but now I'm not feeling it that much. I also find it hard to match the description she gave on the snippet with the content of the song. It is similar to Goddess IMO. At least in terms of Lyric content. The violins are good, the vibe is good but there's something I'm not getting from the song. it is a 3/5 for me.
WARRIOR: An excellent song to close the album. I mean lyrics are amazing and it really shows how much she was battling Lyme and all the effort she did to have her life back. I feel like the song could have been better without the drums or maybe with real ones could have sounded better. I don't share with most of you who say that this is similar to "Fly". Maybe I'm deft or something. I'm happy again with the production and she pushed herself to have her mark on it not only lyrically but sonically. I will give it 5/5 because she did a good job on it though is not my fave one.
All in all it is a 5/5 for this album. Like I said before, this is way better than Under my skin, which is a fan fave. I also love that album but is not quite diverse as this is. She matured in everyway and it really shows. She was not afraid of playing with different sounds and she really took her time to write, to make it as good as she wanted and yeah, it was piano driven as she mentioned before. I thought that it wasn't or that she changed her first vision for the album. Of course we know that something changed in her life. She is happily in love now, maybe if Philip wasn't in her life we would have never got songs like Bigger wow, Souvenir, Crush or Love me insane. The album has a story behind it and I could really feel that. It shows her darkest hours from her brighter ones. I hope we do get a tour for this album. I am already starting to think how she would name it (The dumb blonde tour, please no). I'm willing to listen to most of the songs live and I hope it gets the recognition it deserves. Thank you, Avril! This is my #2 fave album now.
My top 5 from HAW: 1- Birdie 2- Crush 3- I fell in love with the devil 4- Head above water 5- It was in me

Did Drake really did that to Avril and released an old mixtape to streaming on 2/15?! What a mess.

Some melody from "Warrior"'s bridge are strightly copied from Katy Perry's "Wide Awake"'s verse

Here’s my album review after two listens,
1. Head Above Water 9/10: 5 months after its release, it still gives me goosebumps, and I think it’s about to turn into her strongest lead single. The reason I’m not giving this a 10/10 is because it’s one of those songs you’re not always in the mood to listen to, and it’s a bit weird how it starts as a ballad and in the chorus it turns into a full-on mid tempo. Many people have pointed this out and I agree. Nonetheless, it’s a masterpiece.
2. Birdie 10/10: At the moment, it’s my favorite from this record. It’s moody, dark, and has a great softer rock vibe. The electric guitar effect on her voice on the bridge it’s insanely good, along with those sick drums throughout the entire track. When many of us talk about how we think she can evolve in the pop-rock route, this is exactly what we are referring to. 3. IFILWTD 10/10: Speaking of evolving in pop-rock, here’s another perfect example. The heartbeat sound in the verses and the pre chorus gives it a modern twist, and the chorus explodes in a softer UMS-ish way. It’s by far her best self-produced song, and I was never expecting this to be so good. She should produce more.
4. TMIO 7/10: Definitely a grower. Not among my favorites, but not among the worst either. Hate the fake glitchy drum beats. It would’ve sounded better with real drums.
5. Dumb Blonde 9/10: I LOVE this one. It’s the typical “in your face song” from Avril, and it’s always good to have at least one song like this on her records. Prefer the solo version tho, but Nicki didn’t annoy me as much as I thought she would. One thing I have to say, however, is that the guitars should’ve been louder on the chorus, as it would’ve given it the edge the song deserved.
6. It Was In Me 9/10: One of my favorites, along with the first three tracks. That bridge, everything from there on left me speechless. Those “It was in me” after the bridge are such reminiscent of the last chorus of IWY. She actually did THAT 17 years later. Bravo, bravo!
7. Souvenir 8/10: I had such little faith with this one by the looks of the title. It sounded like it was going to be a Katy Perry “Witness” album rip-off, but instead we got a major LG throwback. It also reminds me a bit of Bitchin Summer soundwise, only that with much more mature lyrics and better production. Never judge a book by its cover.
8. Crush 8/10: This is what should’ve been TMIO, honestly. It’s like its much more beautiful and cool sister. I don’t like that the verse sounds so much like the TMIO one. The guitars and beats are very much alike. I definitely think she should’ve just put Crush here and put another song instead of TMIO. My favorite part of the song are the “don’t Crush” at the end of the choruses and the bridge. The percussion is very strong as well. I was expecting it to sound more pop-rock at first, but I like it the way it is.
9. Goddess 7/10: Good song. Love the sound of those acoustic guitars and the way she plays with her voice here is pretty interesting too. Would’ve liked the last chorus to give us some drums like on Darlin.
10. Bigger Wow 6/10: One of the fillers on the album. Not feeling it, don’t hate it, but I can’t say much more about it because I don’t care for it, it sounds like a last minute song. Has nothing surprising. All the other songs have either explosive choruses and:or bridges or unexpected turns. This is just basic.
11. Love Me Insane 3/10: By far my least favorite and probably the only song on this record I genuinely dislike. Like Bigger Wow, it fails to deliver and feels like a filler. Don’t see myself listening to this song more than a couple of times more from now on. Forgettable.
12. Warrior 8/10: I really want to love this song, but I don’t know what it is that makes it a typical ballad. Love the meaning behind it, like the “woaahs” at the end of the chorus, and overall it’s a great song, but it feels more like a continuation of Hush Hush in terms of sound (and Hush Hush is probably my favorite from AL at this moment), nothing unprecedented. The demo, while horrible, has a heavier, rockier last chorus. That would’ve been great for the final version and as an album closure. Love that she’s still keeping ballads as album closers.
Overall I really enjoyed this record. I think vocally it’s her strongest work to date. It’s her best produced album since TBDT and has some of her best songs ever on it. But I still feel that after all she went through (divorce, Lyme, heartbreaks) we would get something stronger, in the same vein as the first songs. After Crush, the record seems to sink a little bit with the fillers...and could we say “lack of emotion”? I don’t know why artists in general always put the strongest material at the beginning and leave the weakest for the end (AL would be the exception in Avril’s case) I think it’s cool she experimented a bit with jazz and soul, but I think I got enough dose of jazzy Avril and want more of that Avril we hear in Birdie and Devil for the next album. As I said, pop-rock CAN be modern and can still deliver quality and be among fan favorites in 2019, as these two songs are the living proof of that. HAW is not too different from what she’s always done, and I’d say it’s still a pop-rock record with some jazz and soul influences on it. It’s an 8.5/10 for me.

Is it me or does Crush sound familiar, the chorus to be specific. Not TMIO or any Avril song. There's just something about it.
