Well headbanging was actually her thing during Bonez Tour.
But it was only during her "Unwanted" live performances.
Her headbanging started to look absolutely weird when she adopted a curly hairstyle. You can see those "stupid" headbangings in the interview videos of 2005.
see from 01:35

I dont think you need a certain haircut or hairtype to headbang...
Acoustic guitar suits Avril the best, just her and her guitar performing NH or in the future FF etc. Or she should actually play guitar (not strumming here and then or making it mute) like she did with HW.
I cant stand her 'poser-rock-image' anymore...

Kesha plays guitars on her live shows, but is not considered a rocker.

I dun give a fuck if she bang her head or not as long as she feels comfortable with it and it keeps her in mood to sing better

Lol at how this conversation started being about her instrument playing, and ended up in her headbanging skills

1. Acoustic Guitar
*video* 2. Piano *video* Well, after 12+ years in music business (it's her job) of course she learned to strike 4-6 guitar chords, few keys on piano or few lousy punches on drums. People learn that in music school in a week. Just like I can play basketball or football or drive a racing car. But that doesn't mean I do it propery or that I'm "pro" at it. First video, from 2004. Two years after her debut. Second video, from 2005. Three years after her debut. Third video, from 2008. Six years after her debut. The piano may be few keys, but that guitar? Nope.

I've been playing the guitar and the piano myself for more than five years now, though I'm probably not that good and I've never had any guitar lesson (I taught it myself, just like Avril ). I'm not gonna say Avril can't play the guitar and the piano well; maybe she plays both instruments much more when she's alone at home or in the studio, who knows. After all she played the guitar on "Slipped Away", "Darlin", and "4 Real" and the piano on "Remember When", "Alice", and "Goodbye" (and more). And there are quite some performances that prove Avril can play these instruments (like those some of you guys posted in this thread). However, there are also a lot of performances, like a lot of the Black Star Tour ones, where she seems to just act as though she's playing. Like this strumming a chord here and there, and that's it. And on the piano she often just played the chords and no real melody. It doesn't bother me too much, though, to me her voice is the most important thing about her performances... But it does leave me wondering: if she can play these instruments, why does she still sometimes mute her guitar and play just a few chords on the piano? Why doesn't she simply show her skill? It's a bit disappointing, tbh. I love seeing Avril play instruments on stage but I don't like seeing her pretend to play when I know she actually has the skill to do it properly.... And btw, I love headbanging, even if it does look stupid sometimes. I even think the fact that it looks kinda mental makes the whole thing even better and funnier

Honestly even when Avril really tried with the instruments, like on Bonez Tour, I wouldn't say she was amazing at it. Like her performance of Slipped Away on the piano at the Budokan show… she's playing the most basic and simple chords there. I think Avril is proficient at guitar and piano and ok at drums, enough to do basic accompaniment for herself or to do it for fun onstage, but let's be real, she's not amazing at any of those instruments. There are 7 year old kids on YouTube that can play much harder songs like Led Zeppelin and stuff flawlessly.
I really never understood why she mimes, especially with guitar, either. I've seen her play better in behind the scenes moments than how she really does onstage. Maybe she's afraid of making a mistake. But overall I think it is just pure laziness more than anything. I think Avril just thinks strapping on a guitar and strumming a few chords adds to her "rockstar" persona and that it makes her look cool, she doesn't seem to care about really playing. Even in the LG days when she tried to prove to everyone she was a "rock chick" she did the same exact thing, where you could barely hear anything she was playing. Then again, I've also noticed this with several other singers who play instruments like Scotty McCreery, Taylor Swift, and Carrie Underwood, where anytime they play guitar with their band you can't hear them at all. So maybe Avril really is playing, but the rest of the band just drowns her out. i still think a lot of it just boils down to Avril using guitars as a prop onstage, rather than really caring about playing.

I'm never really sure whether she just strums the chords in a random rhythm when playing "Nobody's Home" or whether she plays it properly... Anyway, I love these performances of NH where she starts with just her voice and her acoustic guitar and then, in the last chorus, the whole band enters like BAM! *claps* And this here: I think she seems kinda hesitant and careful with playing the piano here, although she's pretty surely just playing the chords. But I still love this performance ♥

Avril is a vocalist, a singer/songwriter. Emphasis on singer, not so much on songwriter. She is not a musician of professional caliber. It appears to me, she does not aspire to be. She has enough basic familiarity with guitar and keyboards to use them as writing tools. If she were motivated to be a better musician, she no doubt could be. With enough practice, anyone can improve. She's been in the business long enough if she wanted to be a better guitar player, she would be. Clearly she's satisfied with her skill level.
I'm like a lot of you that would love to see her put on a good show as a guitar player. I just don't see that happening. I guess we will have to be satisfied hearing her sing. I'm OK with that. If she never wrote another song, if she never played an instrument again, if she walked into a studio with a lyric sheet and laid down vocal track tracks to prerecorded music, like a night out at karaoke, that's fine. I love her voice. As long as she sings songs I like, I will buy them.

I always wonder re her guitar- Do you think that there's a DISCUSSION about it? Does she KNOW? Is it awkward?
