Twin Peaks: The Return. It's like the original show except the director had unlimited creative freedom, a big budget and 25+ years of hindsight...and it's as crazy as you'd expect.

Just finished watching yesterdays episode of Doctor Who. It was so good, easily the best of the series so far.

The last I saw complete was Outlander. I honestly just started watching it because I have this thing for the Jacobite wars. I have mixed emotions about it.
On one side, the story is plainly terrible: it's as predictable as sunset and sunrise, and the few times the events took a different course than expected it's by being incoherent to the general plot line. The worse season-yet- is the second one for so many reasons that I could write another 30 pages; but basically I'll say that it's as slow and painful as an Inquisition torture; a probably less annoying detail for most people that I really hated was that it was supposed to happen in Paris when it was shot in southern England and Prague and it shows. My favourite botched take is one episode that is supposed to happen in Versailles, but shows perfectly the bridge in Prior Park, Bath, which is like...one off the most iconic symbols of the English landscape garden- which was the total opposite of the French formal garden, which ultimate's highlight is precisely Versailles. Different very well known interiors in Prague are also shown, and when I say well known I mean incredibly well known; I haven't ever been to Prague and I could perfectly spot those rooms. It is also historically inaccurate, although the innacurances are usually used to add more drama to the plot. There's also a lot of unnecessary sex, which for some reason seems to be a trademark in current historical productions- my advice is NOT to watch it with your family. I ignored all of this and did it. My cheeks still burn. Oh, and spoiler: the famed Culloden battle is never shown.
On the other, the weakness of the story becomes a strength if you can endure 5 episodes or so; to say it plainly it's so bad that it's good. There are many moments that had me wondering if they meant to be serious or ironic, because things went to such extremes of incoherence and ridiculous that were barely stand-able. The actors, however, are quite good; actually they are way better than their characters and they manage to make the most of them. According to my sister and some of my female friends, too, the hero is incredibly good looking-but he is quite silly lol. The one thing I loved about the plot was that the whole story is about a supposed damsel in distress who most of times has to save her prince charming, because he is reckless and witless while she is smart and deft. The stubbornness of both lead characters is quite funny, too.
My personal guess is that the real failure resides in the original books, because everything not-plot related seems to be quite carefully managed. As I have said, all the actors are quite good-not just the hero and heroine- the photography and locations are wonderfully shot and chosen- specially the indoors sets, to be honest one would expect way more spectacular outdoor scenes being set in Scotland- and I really loved the use of lighting, specially that of candlelight. The costumes, make up and so on is as good as one can expect from a British production- utterly good. They also make some of a coherent use of Scottish Gaelic throughout the series. I don't speak it so I can't judge grammar, pronunciation and such, but historically it's accurate. A good indicator of how careful and elegant the people in charge of the series are-much in contrast with the book's writer- is the opening theme, which is a beautiful rendition of Robert Louis Stevenson version of the Skye Boat Song, which fits perfectly into the story both because of the Stevenson lyrics and the fact that the original song is about Bonnie Prince Charles fleeing after Culloden field battle to Skye island. This latter aspect is underlined by using an arrangement of bangpipes and drums that play the melody so that it sounds like a military march.
If you're also keen on Scottish literature, is also kind of both a delight and a pain to watch : the two first seasons are a VERY obvious mash-up of several Sir Walter Scott's novel's, most notably Quentin Durward, the Antiquary, Waverley and the apocryphal novel "The Witch of the Highlands"-originally titled "La pithye des highlands" in French. Now that it seems that the 3rd season is going to be settled in Jamaica, I guess the plot will start ripping off Robert Louis Stevenson instead.
