Not really, but if she's serving quality with two albums (TBDT and GL), why not choose the era that was good and successful... I mean, after all TBDT was her last era that had great material and was successful... Quality + success > quality Quality is subjective, and a lot of times it comes down to personal taste/preference. I prefer ind/alt more than full pop, and much more when it comes to Avril, who I started to like because she wasn't as pop as others. If we can't completely agree on this issue, I can't imagine what can go through Avril's mind. Especially not now after Taylor brainwashed ha.

Aww that was cute, and her performance was good and she's looking well. Hope this gains her a little bit of popularity, reckon this is a good step.

Didn't GL fail because Avril "tried to become relevant again" by following the new flow of the pop world?
If you mean including Max Martin songs, it's not what she really wanted, she clearly stated a few times. If she had wanted to " be relevant again by following the new flow of the pop world", she wouldn't have released an acoustic-based album that was aggressively rejected by her label, she would have released full-on pop album with some of the things that were "in" at the time or that simply were "pop candy" or something (like Taylor did last year). The 4-year gap between 3rd and 4th album is mainly what made her "fail", along with RCA bitchiness and lack of support, which caused the album to be delayed one year. She wanted to released it in June 2010, but after Alice "flopped" RCA decided it wouldn't be a good idea to release the "original" Goodbye Lullaby. And giving fair promo to WTH, they decided to stop supporting her when she released Smile; and when WYWH was released she had already switched to Epic Records. My main concert about her "being hungry for success again" is that she might get TOO pop for my taste and I would have to stop being her fan. TBDT was still somehow edgy, but all the "poppy" elements that album/era had almost made stop being a fan. Imagine if she went "full-on pop", I don't think I couldn't handle and support her on that...
Actually a lot of non fans doesn't like Avril's full-pop. Her current voice mixed with autotune (as in HTNGU, RNR) is very polarizing. So even if Avril goes on to make "full-on-pop" music, it's very hard to guarantee her success.
I perfectly understand you, I myself lost interest on her in 2007~2009 before Alice was released.
"all the "poppy" elements that album/era had almost made stop being a fan"
the reason I don't like WTH, WYWH.
TBH, on my mp3, I only have Avril's ballads from TBDT, Smile&Not Enough&Everybody Hurts from GL, Complicated&I'm With You&Unwanted from LG. (I have entire UMS and Self-Titled)
the rest of the tracks in my mp3 are usually metalcore

I don't like WTH at all, it kind of looked like a TBDT "leftover", I haven't voluntarily listened to it since that album was released. WYWH is poppy, but I liked it, it fits well with what originally wanted for GL. I don't really know what GP want from her, but I have a certain feeling they don't really want to go full-on pop; or maybe it's just a wishful thinking

It's no surprising that it happened, after all the "tumbrl fiasco". Taylor likes Avril and there are a lot of her fans who happen to like Avril too, so it was a nice surprise for them. I think Avril looked fine, she sang well and looks like everyone had fun.
I hope she gets more hungrier. This is not enough.
Well, I think being hungry for success can be double-edge sword. I'd rather she released a not-so-successful album that I love (GL) than a successful album that I hate (TBDT). I wouldn't like she got "full-on pop" just so she can be successful again, I'd rather she take a more "indie/alt" path even though she doesn't fill stadiums ever again. But that's just my opinion, it's up to her to decide, as long that's what she really wants to do/be and not just to be relevant/successful again. Sometimes, success is a motivation to push the artists to make better album. At this point, I could see she needs another music achievement to get her feeling motivated to get into handling everything that does with album... promotion, idea, concept, stage presentation, album art etc... I think we both just want an album made with heart and inserted with soul, it's that simple right? Dun forget there was a moment when Avril feeling depressed before Let Go formed, if you know what I mean

However if Avril does a song like Demi Lovato's Nightingale, I'll be perfectly happy with it.
I just want Avril to make a magnificently beautiful song, regardless of the genre or poppiness.

This made me so happy to see my 2 favorites perform together! Avril looks and sounds so much better than she did at the SO. Her outfit was nice, even with those boots Taylor was still a giant next to her. I'm glad there is no "bad blood" between them, if there ever was, so guess we don't have to worry about Taylor writing any songs about her. I think what people mean when they say they hope this inspires Avril is that it's been a long long time since Avril played sold out stadiums like this and that maybe doing it again will drive her more for the next album/era. It was pretty obvious how over she was with the whole era last time before it had even started. There was a definite lack of inspiration behind the album and tour (even if a lot of it was due to the fact she was sick). I don't think anyone is meaning to say she should copy Taylor and release a full-on pop record and do a big stage show, but just that she should have passion again and want to do her best. I'm sure she caught the rest of Taylor's show and when you watch Taylor perform, you can see all the effort that was put into putting such a big production on and how much fun Taylor has performing, the interaction with the fans, the fact that Taylor is playing mostly NEW material from her NEW album and not all her old hits, etc. Maybe watching a show like that will just give Avril a little push to really give it her all for this next album, especially after the Lyme disease thing, and push her to give 100% again. The last album and era was just a plain disaster, everything from the lack of direction with the album, the lack of promo, Avril's repetitive interviews, and lack of inspiration with the tour (even if some of it can be excused because of her illness), none of it can or should ever happen in her career again. I don't think Avril needs to go full pop to have semi-success again. I personally don't mind pop music at all (I think Taylor's 1989 is Taylor's best album yet) and am more tolerant of Avril's pop tunes than most of her fans are, but I think it's obvious that they aren't her best songs and they don't really suit her. Songs like WTH, HTNGU, RNR… they are fun to listen to but if she made an entire album with songs like that, I'm just not sure. They just don't suit her as good as her usual pop/rock or pop/punk songs do. I think Avril could have success with songs like GYWYL, Hello Heartache, and How You Remind Me. The indie pop thing I think really suits her and it's just as relevant to the music scene right now as pure pop is (Lana del Rey, Adele, Lorde). What Avril really needs is for her and her label to be on the same page this time. It is hard to know where Avril is at right now, genre wise, is she planning to do more songs like Fly, or HK? Is she still in that "in between" phase where she wants to do both? That was the problem that plagued her last album. Avril has to figure out what direction she wants to go in and stick with it. If she really wants to do some fun pop tunes like HK type stuff, she can go back to that on album 7. Just keep it consistent. She has to know what she wants and the label has to be on the same page. They both have to be behind the project. Epic clearly stopped giving a shit before the first single was even released, and Avril stopped giving a shit probably even before that. No matter the genre, Avril won't have success again unless both she and her label are passionate about the project and are both willing to give 100% to support and promote it. Hopefully her experience with Lyme and now performing with Taylor might give her that kick she needs. Anyway, this was a great opportunity for Avril to get into the public eye again, especially after that whole Tumblr debacle. I think Taylor probably saw an opportunity since there was already so much buzz about both of them in the press, she probably thought "Hey let's show the media we aren't actually fighting." Bet you there will be some articles about it and how they've now "made up." It is good press for both of them and Avril needs all the positive press she can get right now. I really think things are heading in a good direction for her right now and she deserves it after the disaster AL era, the M&G photos, and Lyme. First she performed at SO, then she will be in a new movie, and now performing with Taylor Swift… things are finally looking up for her. Let's hope it stays that way.

Too bad she doesnt have a new album or at least Greatest Hits album in plan this year. With all that positive attention and interest in Avril (lyme-interview, special olympics, show with taylor, charming movie, family guy game), it could have been a decent success She is in a better promo-situation than durung her AL-era...
