It's ironic how labels wanted artists to be like Avril when she herself was the antithesis of the typical pop star. Avril was successful because she wasn't like anyone else and ironically in the beginning her label wanted her to copy the current sound too.

That's would be ironic squared, or (I) x 2. I agree. She was different. She wasn't hatched in the Disney crib and she's adorable. That's why I find all the old hype about how she was "manufactured" by LA Reid ridiculous. LA said himself, "we didn't make her. We need more like her. If you find someone like her send them over. We could use them!"

Tbh I dont believe every website but I also dont believe everything that Avril said. She may have listed some bands as her influences but sometimes that sounded more like trying to get "street credibility" than being honest. I clearly see a strong similarity between Avril and Gwen Stefani/No Doubt and I'm sure Gwen influenced her or maybe Avrils Label had Gwen in mind when they 'created' Avril early image Everyone repeats the tired 'created' line. It's incorrect.

In her Billboard interview she mentions Ed Sheeran and Shawn Mendes as her influences too, and she might even listen to 5SoS since she attended their concert last summer, I think the drummer of that band is an Avril fan

I mean, realistically, all of the things that avril was the antithesis of were also label-created or intelligently fabricated by some insight team.. A total build up to break down situation. Oh, how the industry has changed...

Does your theory apply to the likes of TS or KB? Does any young artist coming simply already know what they want to be? How about the Beatles or Stones or Jimi Hendrix? Were they also created by smart teams at the label?

I meet and talk to Charli XCX every year and never asked her if she's friend with Avril -.-
Anyways as far as "the peaches I'm the Kinda" Avril had also been accused of plagiarizing the song; but I don't think the thing went down further like with the Rubinoos. The songs are vary similar, to my humble opinion.

10 years later, she recognizes it. She didn't mention she gained a lot of followers/fans when Avril "sold out" in 2007, the year Paramore blew up, but something's better than nothing. Interesting the part when he mentions Chad and says it was "suggested" to her "in a misguided attempt to push her in a radio-tested direction", a little curious considering that Paramore went poppier (said by themselves) than before with the self-titled album in 2013 and even more with After Laughter (more of indie-pop, that is so "in" nowadays). As for her solo career, Paramore is de facto Hayley+co., it's always been despite her efforts to say otherwise. She didn't need to go solo or find a side project, she had Paramore for that purpose. And I won't go more off-topic on this matter, if anything we can keep the discussion on the Paramore thread

Hmm...Hayley mantioned Avril twice this year in her interviews. So, what's caused it, I wonder At least, those who denied they had something in common can just seat back There was strict evident parallels between them from the very beginnig. I remember after TBDT came out and I was disappointed, someone recommended me Paramore "they play something like what Avril did in her previous albums". but it was nothing that I expected for, and there was their photo from the Riot photoshoot. I saw that classic mid 00's emo image...uh. I wasn't fond of the funky image and couldn't see the difference between them and "Girlfriend's" Avril. (the first video with Avril I've watched is aol session 2002, and by "like Avril was" I still think of an average looking sincere someone, just compare it to Paramore) I watched "Emergency" video at first...yep it's an emo version of a rock chiсk, but I didn't like those kind of music (not even music but the promise of the songs like that) so it wasn't my cup. Then I watched MB-opposite to Girlfriend, but it was that common thing too. But I like some of their songs from Riot and BNE, maybe there even couple of songs I don't like, so I can say I really like these albums When brothers Farro quit the band Paramore became Hayley's solo project, music got boring, I can't say I don't like it, but I can't listen to the whole albums. And I think Hayley is really great performer and she deserves to be where she is now Avril was for me not just a rock chick or whatever, I liked her bc of some kind of aesthetics, her music and her image during UMS era (I belive the old fans remember how cool it was). And I thought when she got older she would be one of those singers who made concerts with the great musicians (piano, violin etc, you know), I found somethig that I was expected from Avril in Regina Spector and The Florence+the Machine, Avril could be maybe not as indie, but as esthetic...alas

Now let me elaborate the term "sold out"- for one reason or another, they, just like Avril-or the Beatles, or Blondie, or Bowie, and the list goes on and on-, headed for a popper sound. By now they are making some kind of 80s pop revival combined with their signature angst-filled lyrics. And they have realized that saying you've "sold out" is kind of simplifying the thing enormously. Another thing that may have prompted her to open herself about her true feelings towards Avril is that all the s**t she's been going through lately has put things in perspective for her and now she realizes that the whole "credit" thing she craved for is not that much important. That last thing has also probably something to do with maturing; I've found myself to be much more tolerant to other people's musical tastes now that I'm 26 than when I was 20

I will always be obstructed with Californian punk music, bc it's outburst of my generation in the place where I grew up (my own California ), but I never liked all these "I'm a punk, you're not a punk, you listen to commercial you're not true bla bla bla" and it's still a huge opinion of people from post Soviet 90's, but what's the point if you work 9-18 5/2 call yourself more mature more true and so on only bc you listen to underground music?)) Nowadays all these underground things an cultures are slowly dying, and I'm not saying about diy. In the end the one thing matters -you can do something, you can offer it to others and others like it, I believe (within low of course ) "do what you like and do it honestly" I never bullied people about their tastes, I can't say I liked pop-music like Britney or something, bc I never was a girl like that, but sometimes I was having fun with that kind of music. and Paramore was commercial from the very beginning, with all those emo-punk stuff when emo was on top in 00's, but I understand they were more "true rockers" while Avril was "hey hey you you I wear the pants". And no one knows what people would say about Avril if after UMS she got more mature an mature
