We had a thread like this on the old site.
Are there any songs that you like performed live more and think they trump the studio recording? Are there any songs that you think live performances have never been able to live up to the studio recording? Do you only listen to live performances of certain songs because you like them better?
Basically, which songs do you prefer studio and which do you prefer live, if any for either.

I think WYWH is much better live. As is SST. Not a big fan of either on the album. I don't think RnR and HTNGU are great live, but as I've not seen them live in person I can't properly comment on that. Slipped Away seems better on the album to me as well. Bad Girl looks like it sounds terrible live. I really only listen to Unwanted live, not really the album track. Same with DTM. I think Complicated is better live as well.
Sorry I sort of mixed up the first and third questions there.
I used to love Nobody's Home live but I hate the accent she puts on now/her pronunciation and live recordings now look like she butchers the song. But I think it's just her pronunciation on certain songs now that lets live songs down at times, and sometimes it looks like laziness to sing it properly (that's the way Everybody Hurts looked to me on TBST)

For WYWH, I use the part she belts in the bridge, which is less boring I guess
For Push, I just hate the mixed voice
That high note only ~

Songs I either prefer live or like live are:
Take Me Away acoustic Together Nobody's Home (especially acoustic) Forgotten Slipped Away
When You're Gone Innocence
Push Wish You Were Here Stop Standing There Alice
17 (much prefer the live version from the Viper Room!)
That's really it. Most of the LG songs I think sounded much better on the record because her live voice back then wasn't so great. And I think most of the songs on AL sound better on the album as well because her voice wasn't good on the AL Tour for the most part. I also prefer a lot of the GL songs on the album to live because her voice on the BST wasn't good either. I think in most cases the studio versions will always sound better than the live, for obvious reasons because of the polishing and everything, but there are a few exceptions as I stated where I prefer the live recording to the original.

For me, I don't think there are any songs that I prefer live. I like that with the studio versions, Avril recorded multiple takes and could find the best vocal performance she could. I absolutely love any live acoustic performance Avril does, especially since we only have a few songs that were released as studio acoustic versions.
I agree that Avril's vocals weren't the best for TTSMU, BS, and AL tour; her vocals on the Bonez Tour and TBDT were much better. Songs that have high notes that Avril doesn't try to reach live, I prefer to listen to the studio versions.
I've never thought that Sk8er Boi was good live because the guitar intro is never replicated live and falls very short in my opinion (TBDT got the closest). One of my favorite intros is the one for Complicated, which is never replicated live either (probably because it would be difficult), but I do like Complicated live sometimes. MHE is another song that falls short live as well, it sounds so empty compared to the studio version.
I really like 17 live, it's one of the songs she performs best live, IMO.

Slipped Away - The Budokan performance especially is really heartfelt and touching but the studio version just does nothing for me at all

I love the live version of WYG. This performance is my most favourite she has ever done. Her vocals are beautiful and just flawless.

Songs that are better live Unwanted IAGWIW 17 Push I'm not a big fan of ANY of these songs but the studio versions are just yuck. So the live version wins. Most of the time, her live performances doesn't really live up to their studio recordings tbh. The Bonez Tour DVD is an exception.

One song which never translated well live for me was Freak Out. Something about it always sounded bare. In the debut days, I always loved how they rocked up Mobile, Anything but Ordinary and Complicated. I used to love the way she sang Losing Grip live, holding on to the notes in the chorus"WHYYYY should I CAAAAAAaaaare" and the way she dropped to a lower note in "LIISSTEEEEeeen" (MTV Pyjama Jam is a good example of this). And the end of Tomorrow with the falsetto "da da da la da da dada" was beautiful, too.

Am I the only one who doesn't like the Slipped Away performance in Budokan? Sounds really off-note to me.

Am I the only one who doesn't like the Slipped Away performance in Budokan? Sounds really off-note to me. She does miss some notes there and you can hear fatigue in her voice but IMO the reason I and probably others love it is because it's so vulnerable and stripped down, with just her voice and the piano. To me just having the piano there makes the song more raw and emotional.

I know this doesn't really count since there is no studio version but I love her live cover of Fix You by Coldplay. Her vocals definitely hold the emotion that's intended very well and she just sounds great. The songs I really enjoy live over studio are: Nobody's Home - almost always holds more vulnerability and overall sounds better. I really enjoy when Avril plays it acoustically and the rest of the band kicks in towards the end of the bridge. My top favorite may just be when she performed it on Mad Tv though which was purely acoustic. Unwanted - come on, did you HEAR it during the Bonez tour?! Nothing else is needed to be said there. On Let Go, her vocals were still not entirely developed and the recording watered it all down. Just to add in, she couldn't quite handle Unwanted live back then. Don't Tell Me Forgotten I Always Get What I Want Tomorrow Alice Stop Standing There 17 I'm sure there are a few more but I haven't really dedicated time to watching too many recent performances for AL and I know I've forgotten some older ones. Am I the only one who doesn't like the Slipped Away performance in Budokan? Sounds really off-note to me. I really haven't seen a performance of that song I preferred over the studio recording.

I definitely prefer Hot live and I prefer the studio version of Losing Grip. Can't think of anything else right now.

Studio because I love her clear voice so I can listen to the lyrics better but I love her live acoustic versions of Nobody's Home.
