Time to overclock. A nice upgrade from my stock cooler! Nice! I would have gone with the 212 for an extra ~$5. But heck, any aftermarket cooler must be better than the one AMD gave you. I was going to get a 212 Evo until my friend told me how hard it was to install his. He said it took 2 people half an hour to install it.. he was probably exaggerating but it seems 212s are a bit of a pain to install. Plus the T4 was cheaper and nearly as effective.

Holy shit that was frustrating to install. The latches would not connect to the CPU bracket thingy for some reason. Turns out I had to loosen the screws a bit to get it to fit. Dat temperature tho.

My PC does everything I want it to do and then some, and I don't really need to overclock anything. Though I managed to get a stable 4.3GHz out of my FX-8320 one time, because I was curious. That was with a lowly Hyper TX3, and without messing around with voltages. These days I just disable the turbo boost and set the multiplier to 20, so the base clock is 4GHz rather than 3.5. It's an overclock, but it's not pushing the CPU beyond what AMD intended.

It's an overclock, but it's not pushing the CPU beyond what AMD intended. I need to overclock because I need to squeeze as much power as possible from my lowly FX 6300 until I can upgrade to an i5. A lot of games I play are CPU bound. I managed to get 4.3 GHz stable, as well. Kind of amazing what you can do with a sub-$30 CPU cooler. 35 C idle, around 50 C load w/ Prime95. In comparison, with the stock cooler it would idle at 55 C and at load it would be near 70 C...

lol !!! I'm a bit of a spider solitaire addict like your good self. Where are you from in the States? Will you be voting for Trump? Sorry. I didn't mean to ignore this post. I did see it and meant to come back to it. I guess I just forgot. I'm from Cleveland, Ohio. Since this is off-topic, I'll keep my response short. If you wish to discuss it further, send me a PM. Re Trump: In many elections I've had to vote for the lesser of two evils. I don't think much of Trump. But, Hillary is corrupt beyond belief. Trump is the least awful. I can't believe we don't have any better choices. Yeah, I don't want to go off topic either. Trump speaks like the average person I meet when I go out for a drink with his various prejudices against different social groups but it's not really helpful to just point the finger at this group or that group of people. I see what you mean about career politicians like Hilary Clinton that tip toe around the real issues that affect people so they can stay within the safety of their parties that seek to please everyone and offend no one and don't really affect anyone in terms of leadership. I think Trump is right to take a defensive stance towards Muslims because it simply isn't a religion of peace and tolerance no matter how you try to dress it up.

If we're going to talk about the US elections, one of you should start a thread about it in general discussion. It's probably too important to be a footnote in a completely unrelated thread.

For sheer performance, I'd have looked for a good deal on an older i7. Depending what he was upgrading from, he might have been able to salvage more parts from his old build, making the whole upgrade markedly cheaper and easier. But the 6600k is no slouch, plus the newer socket, chipset and DDR4 support make it a much better choice for future-proofing. He did good.

GTX 1070 reviews are out. As expected, a $400 GPU outperforms a $1000 GPU. At the very least, they break even. Insane! www.guru3d.com/articles_pages/nvidia_geforce_gtx_1070_review,1.html I'd be seriously tempted to get one of these things if my GTX 980 wasn't doing everything I need it to do. Keep in mind that this is the bog standard non-overclocked version of the card. The inevitable wave of Hyper 1337 XtR3me Turb0clocked editions are going to yield even more awesomeness.

He's coming from a 7 year old build with an AM3 socket (Phenom II X6). Nothing to salvage there, other than his video card (7950) and PSU (some crappy no-name 750 watt)

AMD's RX 480 was recently announced. GTX 970 performance for $200. I think I found my next card. Let's hope it doesn't heat up like the GTX 480.

Heh, I was waiting for the AMD's response to the 10xx cards but this was... unexpected. Seems they're aiming for the low-high-end bracket, only at a shockingly affordable price. Well played, red team. As a bonus, two of these things can allegedly outperform a single GTX 1080... for $400. It reminds me of the good old days when high-end gaming was an expensive hobby, but not as insanely expensive as it later became. I wouldn't get TOO excited until we see some benchmarks, of course. We don't know if its alleged performance is going to be across the board, or just for a handful of optimised games. Protip: sometimes game developers and hardware vendors are full of shit. Also, remember that AMD suck at their driver updates. They've got better since the ATI days, and the competition doesn't always get it right, but it's something to consider if you're making the jump.

I just got my first taste of high-end PC gaming in my local gaming lounge. The PCs are powered by a GTX 970 and an i5. I forgot what type of i5 but it had a stock cooler. Overwatch ran on ultra at 100+ FPS. Pretty much every other person there was also playing Overwatch though there was one person playing slither.io

The closest thing my town has to a gaming lounge are some laptops at the library. We ain't seen one o them fancy gamin rigs before, we don't take kindly to backlit keyboards round here!
