Had a longish drive today and queued up GL. Listened to the whole record all the way through. Not sure I've done that before. I know a lot of folks here say the writing is simple and the production lacks, etc. But I was smitten; and as a whole work of art I was kinda blown away. I really came to appreciate the "heart" behind it all. No one does "feeling" better than Avril IMHO. The record is so different from the others, and for that reason I admire her brave stance.
Please be gentle. Haha.

I agree with you. With some of the messy production on AL, Goodbye is amazing. Not that I thought the production was bad before. I've also seen myself gravitating towards listening to a lot of GL tracks lately. Like I Love You recently popped into my head, What The Hell and Smile is basically two of my favorite pump up jams, and Darlin has been one of my very favorite tracks from Avril because of the vocals and the very acoustic driven instrumental. (Side note, I'm still really bummed that when the instrumentals leaked, Darlin and Everybody Hurts had messed up audio. Everybody Hurts I think might have a fixed one or a fanmade recreation that sounds very close, but I don't have a good copy of Darlin.) I feel like this is definitely one of my more listened to albums of hers. This may be due to the fact that I became a huge Avril fan like a year or so after TBDT came out so I missed out on the hype and ability to hear everything new, fresh, and also the ability to see her on tour. I still think it had great production quality, and I would sure hope so if the album delayed and compromises made. While AL had some well produced tracks, there were definitely some that had some questionable production. Bitchin' Summer almost immediately comes to mind, the vereses of Sippin on Sunshine and Here's to Never Growing Up. Next time I ever go on a longish trip by myself, I definitely need to listen to album the albums from start to finish. Since I was late to the game, Let Go is definitely the album with tracks I skip the most. Sorry for this post being all of the place haha. So many thoughts came to me while writing this.

Good points. You obviously know a lot of backstory on those "leaked" songs. I never heard about it.

It's still probably my favorite album... I feel like it's genuinely emotional and showed a bit of growth. Avril isn't the best lyricist, not even in my top to be honest, but GL, I felt like she truly let it all out and wasn't trying to go with an image .... I liked that for a change, being commercially mainstream didn't seem that important to her during that cycle, despite what the label was trying to do. I wish we could have heard all those tracks she was working on before her label sent her off to max Martin but what's done was done... AL wasn't as good a follow up to me. Some good ballads but a lot of it just didn't sound like her....

I agree with your points. "Goodbye Lullaby"is a really beautiful and mature album, diffirent to the others she had released before that one. The lyrics are heartfelt, honest and emotional. Her voice being the main instrument in most of the songs, expresses the emotions the lyrics try to convey in a way that touches one's heart and soul. The production, even though quite simplistic and basic as well as "outdated" somehow, allows the emotions expressed by her voice to reach out to the listener and let him/her to actually feel the emotions that she is trying to convey. Whenever I listen to the entire album, I feel like my heart and soul have been touched in a way, like I can feel everything these songs try to express. And that's why I love this album so much, why it's my favorite album of hers. Because it makes me "feel" and a lot of the time when I'm sad for whatever reason, it makes me feel "better" in a way.

Along with LG, Goodbye Lullaby is my favourite Avril album. I like the Max Martin songs the least, they're all bland to me, but the rest of the album is great. I guess I focus more on the vocals, lyrics and melody than production so I don't know what everyone's complaining with in terms of that. I think the production works and I like how it sounds. Actually the production on the MM songs bothers me more because I guess it's just not a sound I like, especially on WTH.
Lyrically I think it conveys her confusion and heartache over her divorce really well, and the new feelings of falling in love again too. If you want simple, cliched lyrics then UMS is the place to look imo. Her singing is great too in conveying the songs' emotions. I wish we could have heard a few of those other songs (Gone especially) that she recorded for the original version of the album before MM got involved but I still think the album is great.

The sad thing is how everytime Avril wants to make a mature record after TBDT era her label keeps sending her back to do "fun boy bashing songs" cause it's so "gonna sell well" and "don't forget to put that rainbow hair back on" . She is not a half that popular as she used to be so that formula doesn't work anymore . Just let her make a record the way she wants for god's sake She really needs an independent record company

When I first bought the album, I didn't appreciate it that much... I loved Remember When and WYWH, but apart from them, I was pretty disappointment, I don't know why. I've always used to listen to UMS or TBDT mostly, some of Let Go or AL, but never GL. A couple of weeks ago though, I listened to the entire album again, and I loved it!! I could understand its meaning, maybe because I'm not a teen anymore, I've experience life a little more. It is my favorite album now

The thing with GL is the same as AL, for me. I love 3 or 4 songs and the rest I find just "ok/good". And I always think how would these good songs work if they were on a single record, something like:
Wish you were here Everybody Hurts Let me go Give you what you like Bad Girl Darlin Falling Fast I love you Hush Hush
I know it would lack powerful/rock songs, but I guess it would be a solid record.
