After a LG, UMS and TBDT listening binge, I think she could qualify, especially for her timing and melodic phrasing.

Seeing as those albums were all co-written with other people, I'd say the standards for being a "genius" have been somewhat lowered. Most of the songs that she wrote herself can be found on GL and AL. Commercial success doesn't always tell you how good something is (I know GL is some fans' favourite album, and I'm sure there are people out there who think AL slays), but there's certainly a correlation between the songwriting credits and the fact that those albums sold comparitively poorly. Before people start expanding on what I'm saying, I can't remember the single sales for Alice, but I'm guessing it didn't do as well as GF or Complicated.

No, she's not, and that's okay. I perfectly know she's not the most "genius" in terms of lyrics and stuff, but I'll always appreciate her honest and meaningful songs, which is mainly while I'm still a fan (not as much as before, though). I don't think success is synonym of the artist being a genius music-wise, because there are tons of artists who would be considered genius but aren't really famous, while there are more simple/basic artists that are really successful.

She is talented but unable to reach genius. One side, she doesn't study much about music and melody naturally comes to her mind from feeling, consequently come up something truly express the feeling through melody, it proves her talent. However, her song writing skill kind of limits herself to take her music to another level coz she's never finished school. One last thing, as much as how she still needs a decent producer, which she still cannot produce and develop the music properly. So, not... ~
Genius? Should be Bruno Mars, Lady Gaga, Beyonce, MJ, Cher Lloyd etc...

No. Avril is good at what she does and many of the writers and producers she's worked with have said how talented she is when it comes to writing songs (I think the Runners even in fact used the exact term "genius").
But I think the real geniuses in music are people like Paul McCartney, Michael Jackson, Freddy Mercury, I'm tempted to even say Taylor Swift but tbh I don't even think she would be put on the same level as them.

She writes catchy songs but certainly nothing that could be called musically brilliant, and nothing that could truly stand the test of time.
If we're forgetting about all the classical geniuses (Mozart, Beethoven, Bach... etc) and concentrating on contemporary artists, As Bongo mentioned the likes of Paul McCartney & Freddie Mercury etc will still be admired and praised years from now for being geniuses, I'm afraid Avril will be mostly forgotten, perhaps a radio station will play Sk8er Boi in 30 years and people will be like "Oh wow, remember that old classic?" and get all nostalgic, but you can guarantee that if that radio station played Bohemian Rhapsody in 30 years, it would still sound fresh and everyone would still know the lyrics and sing and headbang along even 70+ years after it was released...
I'm a huge Nirvana fan, and Kurt is often called a genius, but musically I find it hard to even include him in a list of top musical geniuses. He had so many other factors that propelled him to genius status. (I can't think of any artists since Kurt who could be called a genius actually... there must be some, but I can't think of any right now (which shows how rare musical geniuses are)... but anyway...)
Avril writes some catchy songs with nice melodies etc, but honestly, that's about it

No, I don't think Avril is a "genius" when it comes to things like lyrics and such. She's very talented and is capable of writing and creating amazing music but that doesn't exactly make her a genius. Lyrically speaking, I believe Avril's gotten a lot weaker since Let Go. Although Avril insists she wrote almost all of the lyrics, I believe The Matrix had a bigger hand in writing than we're led to believe. Under My Skin had some pretty mediocre lyrics (ex: rhyming "home" with "home" in Nobody's Home, Slipped Away) and although the self written songs on Goodbye Lullaby are good, they aren't enough to qualify her as a "genius". As others have stated though, that's completely okay. Avril is great at making the quality music she does which is why we're all even discussing her almost 15 years into her career.

Unfortunately, no. While catchy, Avril's songs simply do not have a deep lyrical meaning that masterpiece songs have. 75% of her songs are about love/relationships/breaking-up, the theme of approximately 3 quintillion other songs. Even her "deeper" songs like I'm With You and Keep Holding On don't hold a candle to songs like Bohemian Rhapsody, or Stairway to Heaven, or even Jesus of Suburbia.

She is to me, her whole career proves it, she has mangaed to defy the odds and still be there unlike Ashley Simpson and other singers from her era

OT but:- I can't think of any artists since Kurt who could be called a genius actually... there must be some, but I can't think of any right now (which shows how rare musical geniuses are) I mean no disrespect, but this might have something to do with your age. They say you start to lose interest in new music when you hit your mid-30s, and I definitely think there's some truth to that factoid. E.g. plenty of people - typically younger people - seem to think Kayne West and Lady Gaga are geniuses... yeah I don't really get it either, but what does a 33 year old know about young people's music?

Yeah I realise there is a generational thing, but on the other hand, the extra years of listening under our belts lets us easily recognise recycled ideas. There doesn't seem to be many people doing things that haven't been done before. I mean Lady Gaga is basically the Madonna of this generation. (I hate to say it, because he is a $%^&* &^% %^&%^&, but...) Kanye is a good example though, some of his stuff is quite interesting and possibly even (I'll let my clearly ageist opinion slip in by saying NOWHERE NEAR AS GOOD AS...) a modern Trent Reznor-type, albiet different genres.
