I think it has good lyrics and an important message but I just can’t get into it as much as other fans. I think if not for the lyrics and message, no one would think much about this song, it’s a rather unimaginative basic pop melody. I think it’s overrated.

Not to mention the irony that if T Swizzle was a man she would not have reached the stratospheric heights she enjoys now.

The man doesn't hit as much as other songs mainly because I'm over songs about if I was a man I'd be treated better. I much prefer I am the man, goddess, queen, whatever and I'm owning it right now.
I think her stand out song on Lover is Cruel Summer. I'm always in the mood for it. I find Lover (the song, hmm maybe the album too but that's a different topic) overrated. I can't even listen to it anymore.

I don’t really listen to her album much but at the moment I really enjoy The Man. A while ago my favorite song was Cornelia Street.

I agree, Cruel Summer is easily the standout track. She is missing out on a huge opportunity if she doesn’t give it the single treatment.
The album is good, but I agree overrated. I can see why it was passed over for the Grammys (even if they don’t grade objectively). It’s too all over the place with different genres and styles of songs and it’s too long of a track list. While it has an encompassing theme of love, it otherwise doesn’t feel like a cohesive body of work the way that, for example, Fearless, 1989, and reputation do. The songs individually are good and it’s some of her best lyric writing to date, but I would not say this is her overall best album.

She is very goal oriented, she may be waiting for summer and making it the song of the summer. Like Lover was a winter hit...sort of. Since it was released at the end of summer 🤔.

I actually really like the video for The Man and it's cool that Taylor directed it herself. It exaggerates the male stereotypes in a really comical way and I'm not sure that a lot of these double standards really exist so much anymore (do people really still think it's "cool" for a dude to have a one-night stand or throw a temper tantrum when he loses?) Aside from the oversimplification of these double standards and stereotypes, I think this a good and entertaining video. I also thought her transformation into the man was brilliantly done, most people could not even tell it was her at all. I myself was wondering throughout watching if it was her, I figured it had to be, but it looked nothing like her, so really good job on that.

I don't think any of the scenes were about being cool but that men do all those things and get away with it but women never do. Just like song says. The tantrum tennis scene was a parallel to what happened to Serena Williams.
I didn't really care for the video. The only part I liked was when "the man" pisses on the wall with her album names. The "return to Taylor Swift" sign and the no Scooter sign. It shows how Scooter is pissing on her life works and claiming them like how dogs mark their territory on things that don't belong to them. Also where she shows the black man in the train also getting squished while the white man spreads his legs taking up unnecessary space and touching himself.
But I've seen this already in real life so many times. Like the song, the video is just showing things we already know. So it's not shocking until we find out that that was Taylor all a long. But that was ruined for me before I saw the video and was already my assumption that it was going to be her dressed as a man anyways.
Side thought: I wish she'd made I Did Something Bad a single. I find that song more empowering and badass than The Man.

But that’s kind of what I was saying. Yeah Serena was criticized for her behavior but I feel like if a male player acted the same way, I don’t necessarily think he’d get away with acting like that either. These days, shitty behavior is shitty behavior regardless of gender. I’d like to think most people don’t approve of it no matter who it is. That was what I was getting at - do people really still let men get away with this stuff anymore? Maybe to some extent, but I think the video exaggerated it to make a point.

Maybe it depends on the sport or situation? Because in the NHL the players sometimes throw a tantrum breaking their sticks and it's just normal behavior to them. I see what you mean though because the douchebag in the beginning of the video would probably get sued.

You both have valid viewpoints. As much as I love her, I really don’t care for this production. Mainly because it doesn’t make any sense (or she’s being hypocritical). She says if I were a man “I’d be THE man,” which means she’d be the kinda guy she’s trashing out here. Please Taylor, you’ve been sexualizing yourself you’re entire career. Double standards work both ways.

Hmm I think what she means when she says "I'd be THE man" is that if she made all the same decisions throughout her career, but if she were a guy, people would look at her differently. Her fame, riches, dating history would be seen as cool, not things they make fun of her for or slut shame her for. Like especially with how many guys she used to date, if she were a guy, people would be like "yeah that's so cool, he's gettin' it!" and she'd be considered "the man." Don't think she means that she would want to be the type of guy she's calling out, but rather that people would treat her differently and react to her decisions differently simply if she were a man, which I get. I do think the majority of headlines that have been written about her throughout her whole career wouldn't have been written if she were a man.

Despite being quite frankly irritated by the sudden, relentless, OTT surge of feminism in recent years, I absolutely love this song lol. Ignoring the message it’s great fun.

The song and message is good but I don't listen to it very often anymore. The whole album not so much. just a few random songs. and yes I am an album listener but still.. the album is too long and too over the place. I prefer 1989 and Rep. Those albums are masterpieces! <3
