If only our girl Avy would take some pointers from Swizz. Yes but I think this is almost out of their control. I know Taylor plays the game and takes it really seriously but even she's been let down by the system. I really don't get why Avril has been ignored by the Grammys since LG. Yeah she's not the best but KHO, WYG, HAW, maybe MHE could have been nominated but they weren't even recognized I think by other award shows. She just has bad luck and her rebellious reputation did her no favors imo. Or maybe because she took too much credit for those LG songs. I don’t think he’s referencing the Grammy nominations but rather how much effort Taylor puts into her music and giving back to the fans, like with this Disney special. Avril could have easily done something similar for HAW. I agree Avril should have been recognized by the Grammys at least also during UMS and maybe even Girlfriend should have gotten a nomination for some sort of Best Pop Song award. Since 2007, I don’t think it’s surprising she hasn’t been nominated though. At best maybe HAW should have gotten Best Christian Song but even then, that’s kind of a stretch. I feel if Avril truly wants to still win a Grammy, she needs to up her game by a LOT and put out a truly great record. I think she knows what it takes to get the nominations but I don’t think she wants it badly enough to put that amount of effort into it. And that’s fine. If she just wants to make music and doesn’t care about awards, more power to her. But if she does care about the awards, she can’t think she’s going to get them with the subpar music she’s been putting out and barely promoting it.

No worries bw.... You make some great points about the Grammys in general. Like Bo said, Tay Tay is performing the WHOLE fricken new album and Avril did 3 old songs and one new one (for around $100) on that lame livestream.

Hell even in concert Avril only performed 4 of the album tracks at any given show. In total we only heard 6 of the songs live on tour and another new one just one time recently. We’ve only basically heard half the album live.

Lol and played HAW and WAW like they were some huge hit. But I understand why WAW had so many performances.
I saw the trailer. I like how she plays August. You would think she'd only play Cardigan or Betty as it's for a promo but no she picked a new song yay.
I wonder how long this will be if she plays the whole album. It's 17 songs. 1 hr 7 min. Plus commentary. So around 2 hrs? Must of taken a few days to film. Her voice must have been tired after.

On the Rep tour she played every song on the album! Except So It Goes, which was played a couple times during the acoustic set I think. But wasn't part of the regular setlist.

Apparently in the documentary Taylor confirmed what many fans already suspected. William Bowery is indeed her boyfriend Joe lol I think that’s kind of cool they wrote a couple songs together and they were able to get critical acclaim based on their own merits without people focusing on the fact she wrote a song with her boyfriend. A lot of people wanted to believe it was Harry Styles but thank god it isn’t, so they can stop with their stupid Haylor theories.
Apparently Joe created the piano melody in Exile and wrote the opening verse that Bon Iver sings. And I suspect his involvement in Betty is that maybe Taylor needed the perspective of what a dumb 17-year-old boy would say and do in that situation.
Edit: Ooh I haven’t watched the doc yet but I’m seeing bits and pieces posted online and apparently Joe wrote the chorus of Betty. Who knew he was so musically gifted, what???!!!

I just got done watching the special and WOW!!! What a treat that was, to get to hear this incredible album live from start to finish! She sounded amazing, just like on the record. And it was very impressive to see them play through the album for the first time with I'm assuming no rehearsals or a lot of prep. It was incredible to watch the wordless communication between Aaron & Jack from one musician to another, just watching each other play and taking musical cues from each other in that way musicians do.
Exile was absolutely incredible, first off I'm impressed at how well Bon Iver can sing through a mask lol But the fact he was recording in another studio in another state, it sounded like the two of them were right in the same room with each other. Though I do wonder if she recorded the song and then sent it to him and he just dubbed his part over it, rather than them both recording at the same time maybe.
Some interesting tidbits about the songs:
- She had always wanted to write a song about Rebekah, the woman who owned her Rhode Island home before her, but she never had the right track until Aaron sent her what ended up becoming The Last Great American Dynasty
- Love that Joe is William Bowery and that he wrote the piano melody and first verse of Exile, as well as the chorus of Betty. I think it's super cool that he and Taylor wrote a couple songs together, that must be really special to her every time she goes to perform them, knowing she wrote them with him. I'm really curious to hear Joe sing now lol
- The way she spoke about My Tears Ricochet and the way she performed it makes me really think the theory about it being about Scott Borchetta is true. She looked like she was in such pain performing that song and by the end of it, you could see it was like this cathartic, emotional experience for her. I got that same feeling from Mad Woman as well, she didn't say specifically what it was about but you knew what she was referring to with Scooter trying to gaslight her every time she reacts angrily to him buying/selling her music and ordering her to keep quiet about it
- I really loved the explanation behind Mirrorball and that it's a commentary on celebrity. I always thought it was just about Taylor's own insecurities as an artist, but the fact it's also about how we put celebrities on a pedestal is another interesting component
- I loved hearing the story behind Epiphany and her explanation of why she wanted to turn her grandfather's story into a song and tell his story because it was like he himself could never bring himself to tell it. And the way Aaron mentioned the fact that Taylor brilliantly was able to bridge these two stories together of these similar things that happened in WWII that are also happening now was really perceptive
- I loved hearing about Peace and how Taylor wanted to write about that concept but with the most opposite kind of lyrics, I thought that was really brilliant. I kind of always felt that way when listening to the song, that it was about this concept of peace and how it sounds really peaceful sonically, but the lyrics are so chaotic and describe anything but a peaceful life. It's like I picked up on that but never fully realized it until she said it.
- I also always thought Hoax might be about a few different things that had happened in her life as the lyrics sounded like they could apply to more than one person or situation, which is basically what she confirmed
- I loved hearing the story behind The Lakes and I'm glad she decided to make this the true last track of the album rather than Hoax because I think it really sums up the overall theme of the album well, but it also doesn't sound as sad and depressing as Hoax does. She also gave this very deliberate look to camera when she sang the lines "I've come too far to watch some name dropping sleaze tell me what are my Wordsworth" ---> aka "fuck you, Scooter" lol
Overall, this production was a 10/10, or should I say a 13/13? lol Excellent video and sound quality, an amazing treat to hear every song live, and of course all the little stories and explanations behind each song really just brought another layer of understanding to it. The only thing is that I'm surprised they didn't really talk too much about Cardigan, in fact I think they completely skipped talking about it for some weird reason.
I feel like this concert alone shows folklore deserves to win the Grammy for Album of the Year. Hearing the songs in this way really shows how brilliantly written they are and Taylor's performance was fantastic. Exile and Epiphany in particular really hit me hard emotionally. Just a stunning overall piece of work from her (and that's coming from someone who initially didn't like this album lol).
But I think even more than the music itself, their conversation about how this album was made in a pandemic and is really representative of the time it was written in also shows why it should be named Album of the Year. Even though quite a few artists have released albums in this time, I don't think any are quite as representative of this time as folklore is. Not only because of literally how it was made from different parts of the country, but the songs themselves discuss emotions that people have been going through during this time. If 2020 was represented musically, folklore is the best album to describe what it was like to live during this time. The cottagecore aesthetic, stripped down production, and emotional, vulnerable lyrics of escapism all perfectly fit what this year was about. Add on to the fact she surprise dropped it with no promo and it broke tons of records and it's the only album released this year to sell a million copies, well it's obvious it should be Album of the Year.

Forgot to mention something else I thought was interesting.
She knew she wanted Bon Iver to be on Exile but she was afraid to call him and ask him to be on it, thinking he was going to say no. So she instead sort of got Aaron to eventually bring up the idea and I guess he's a mutual friend, so he asked him if he wanted to do it, and then Justin Vernon sent in the bridge. Taylor said the whole time she thought there was going to be some moment where he suddenly would drop out of the collaboration (which obviously never happened). Haha she wanted him to be on the song so bad and was afraid he somehow wasn't going to do it. I think that's just crazy because who the hell wouldn't want to be on a song with Taylor Swift? lol I guess it just goes to show that she doesn't take herself or her fame too seriously and is still scared of artists saying no to her, even though they pretty much all always say yes.
