I knew there was a reason for coming back to check on BA! Quite a strange thread on an Avril forum, I could name a lot of bands like @harvey mentioned (Strapping Young Lad etc) and like @mercedes said Thunder etc but they're not "obscure" if you're into that kind of thing.
Well I'll try for a few that people here might not know:
Sister Irene O'Connor (basically an old nun from the 70's (ish?) who got her hands on a drum machine and a keyboard and made music)
I listen to a few avante-garde artists like Dimanada Galas (she did an album with John Paul Jones of Led Zep so she's probably not that obscure, again if you're into that kind of thing)
Klaus Nomi?
Bitter Ruin (relatively unknown duo from England but easily one of my fave bands ever)
Zaz (I don't know how well known she is in France, but am guessing she probably more obscure in English speaking countries)
.....I could go on for ages
Oh, I'm also a huge fan of both Frank Zappa and Captain Beefheart who are kind of obscure giants in music? If you research modern music you'll be bound to stumble into them at some point being referenced by someone but they're very rarely on radio/MTV (or whatever the kids are listening to these days). Zappa was one of the people who helped get the "explicit lyric" sticker on albums so they wouldn't be banned/edited, he actually got an explicit lyric sticker on one of his instrumental albums lol)
