Avril's voice has changed a lot throughout the years, we went from the not so feminine voice from Let Go to the piercing high-pitched voice from TBDT to the sweet voice from GL and AL powerful voice and in my opinion she has improved a lot as a vocalist! Do not judge me, but LG/UMS performances were really shaky and out of tune. I love the AL era performances, I think the era as a whole is really underrated by fans, in this performance for example she sounds amazing!

Personally I think UMS was the best because she still retained that unique tone from LG but her voice was stronger and more solid by then. Yeah up until TBDT era her early performances were sometimes out of tune, etc. but that's because she was young and untrained. TBDT era she started getting a lot better when she began receiving training. I don't really like the early TBDT performances because her voice is too chipmunkish but by the time she got to touring it was a lot better. I'd say that might have even been her strongest era vocally.
Early LG and early GL eras were also great. I loved her tone in LG but I think her voice fatigued quickly and by the time she got to touring her voice sounded very odd, too low, and often out of tune. I don't know if she was trying to sound more rock or her voice had just tired or what, but it sounded bad.
Early GL sounded so promising. But I hated her BST vocals. Often just sounded like shrieking to me and she sang with this weird accent for no reason. Hated it.
AL era was awful IMO. She was out of tune more than she should have been and she seemed to get winded during performances really easily. Did you see the show at the Highland Ballroom? That has to be by far one of the worst shows of her entire career. Her voice sounded completely tired, fatigued, and strained, even when she talked. This was even before she got sick. I don't know what the deal was that era with why her voice sounded strained and shrill all the time.

The performance you listed above demonstrates exactly why everyone hated the AL era. She completely ditched all the high notes there and did the same thing in other songs like MHE. I don't know if it was laziness, illlness, or bad vocal condition that was the reason why she skimped out on high notes but her performances that era came across very lazy. Another reason why her vocals were bad that era.

I actually really loved the high pitched voice from TBDT, I think it really suited her music at the time, It made the songs sound catchy and that's one of the reasons Girlfriend was a hit. I have seen the HighLine Ballroom performance and I do agree with you, she got tired really fast but most of the accoustic versions of songs from the Avril Lavigne era sounded really good. Finally when I was talking about the lives from Under My Skin era not sounding good I was only refering to the ones from the beggining of the era, she started sounding way better from late 2004/ 2005.

The AL era started off very strong.
I still feel like her vocals AL era were the strongest of all her eras(not necessarily on pitch all of the time, but her vocals were solid at first, especially in the above clip.) But toward the end, I don't know WHAT happened. Maybe she changed vocal coaches or something but her technique wasn't the best. Still...
performance-wise though, I'm gonna have to give it to GL

Avril has said that the disease would leave her really tired and that was probably the reason she was always out of breath or not moving at all...One thing I didn't like during the AL tour was her accent in some songs, it would completely ruin the song for me.

I voted for GL. I think she sang pretty good in that era. TBDT was squeaky, LG and UMS were out of tune and for AL, I think her voice did sound a little tired

She didn't get Lyme disease until 2014 though. Her performances were still meh long before she ever got sick.

I don't know, I still think the Budokan show was the best (overall) she's ever sounded. So I vote of UMS.

I voted for GL. I think she sang pretty good in that era. TBDT was squeaky, LG and UMS were out of tune and for AL, I think her voice did sound a little tired Most of the acoustic performances were great during that time. And that is the album that showcases her voice better.
