Unwanted is an overrated song, at least among her fans who prefer her rocky stuff. It's a generic, bland, post-grunge ditty with no 'hook' to it at all.

^ I find Unwanted to be more addictive than Losing Grip - love her vibe.
Unwanted is the only song I like from LG beside I'm With You.
I think Losing Grip's lyrics are failure, even worse than the lyrically criticized tracks in GL.

I prefer losing grip, it's just better in my opinion But as overrated as Unwanted is, I don't mind it that much; but I will usually skip it today

Hush Hush could have been a big hit if it's the lead single of Goodbye Lullaby
I could imagine people wouldn't have thought Avril is a joke if all the songs of 3rd album would be like I Will Be, Won't Let You, Keep Holding On, Contagious, Runaway...
I think "little cheesy" on Avril could make big hit like When You're Gone, Here's To Never Growing Up
Avril's voice seems matching with acoustic guitar more than electronic
I really love the strumming of acoustic guitar in her songs and I thought it is what makes Avril special

Aww I love Unwanted, especially live. Losing Grip bores me, I can't remember the last time I listened to it.
Tbh I think Let Go is just overrated. It's a good, solid album but I don't think it's as good as people say it is. It's just that it's iconic.

I love that song too and I remember that years ago (before I joined bandaids) I used to think that Unwanted must have been favourite song of almost every Avril fan. But when I joined bandaids I found out it's basically the opposite. Anyway, for me the melody/rhythm of Unwanted is godlike.

Don't get me wrong, I do like Let Go and absolutely adored it as a kid, but I think some fans love it more due to nostalgia and the whole 'this was the real Avril/the new one sucks' or maybe this is just YouTube. I can see the argument that the lyrics in Unwanted are a bit childish but I think it all depends on the meaning you give the song. I just think it's fantastic.

I would say that argument applies a lot more to UMS than LG or any of her other albums though. I just think UMS is incredibly overrated by fans, and I think it is more to do with nostalgia than the actual music itself. UMS is a solidly produced album but most of the lyrics are poorly written, half the album is immature breakup songs, and I just don't think it's nearly as good as people say it is at all. I've always found it to be quite a dull and monotonous sounding album. Too much of the same dreary angry rock tunes. Some of the songs on their own are good but I just can't take an entire album of that. I think a lot of fans just remember the good times they had listening to it and that's part of why they like it so much, just like part of the reason I love LG is because I have good memories listening to it.

Any time you make a generalization like this, you're bound to be wrong some of the time. I'm definitely one who prefers Avril's more upbeat tunes and I love this song. 'Unwanted' and 'Losing Grip' are my favorites from LG. Of course, I like many of the others. The "hook", for me is the chord progression. Em C D A. I can't imagine it's unique but, I can't remember it in anything else I know how to play. I've even played around with transposing keys and different strumming patterns and I can't make this chord progression sound like anything else familiar. The vocals are great despite my belief the lyrics are a little weak. I would have preferred "Don't talk words against me" went something like "Don't talk shit about me" or "Don't speak out against me". As always, you're entitled to your opinion. But more importantly, you are entitled to mine.

I remember that when I first heard Losing Grip I thought it's one of her worst songs and now it's my all-time favorite lol. Something similar happened with Unwanted - I thought it was horrible and it took me several listens to get into it but now it's one of my favorites.

Fair point, people were talking about LG and I think that's overrated by fans too. I also prefer UMS But it's definitely overrated. I don't find it monotonous but UMS is more my style of music.

It's hard to put my finger on exactly why I find it bland and generic and hookless, other than that I just don't find it catchy or memorable. But I can tell you that an unusual chord progression isn't in itself an unusual thing, in the world of rock music and its many, many derivatives. I'm desperately trying to find a non-confrontational way of making my point, without resorting to the tedium of listing other songs by other artists with unusual chord progressions. I have stuff to do. But let's just say that my taste in music is extremely eclectic, and what I'm saying makes perfect sense to me.

If it makes you feel better, Unwanted is hardly the first song of its kind that I find bland and generic. I think bands like Nickelback, Staind, Creed etc. have built entire discographies on ripping off music which came before them and then watering it down - namely the whole 'grunge rock' thing in the late 80s and early 90s. And oh boy don't get me started on all the cliches and copycatting in metal... and I fucking love metal, btw.

I don't completely dislike Unwanted, and she has other songs I would rank as being worse, but it's easily my least favorite off LG. I think Unwanted is also much better live, especially the Budokan version where she puts more emotion into it. I remember Zach from the old forum said he always thought the production was too poppy for the kind of song that it is, so perhaps that could have something to do with people's dislike of it as well. Her live performance of it in Budokan is often praised by fans.
