Bigger Wow is about having a new lease on life, wanting adventure and excitement, just being in love with being alive. She's looking for something more excitement than she currently has, something really amazing and exciting. Which fits really well in the story of the album now that she is healthier and got rid of her toxic ex she's feeling excited about and ready for life again.
She liked a lot of singer/songwriter types and bands in her teens so I think she really did want to write but she's not the most academic person so her vocabulary isn't great and it sounded very teenage, but that worked well early on. I think she just feel out of love with music a bit around AL6 and didn't put much effort in. I think people who write with her try to keep things simple too since that was her original style. I'm glad she stepped up her game this last album - more imagery, variety of language, more symbolism used etc

I always had a problem with HAW, to me it's little boring... I mean I will be more happy if HAW had a little more drums and guitars. Like Crush, I like that song but not listen it much because it's little boring, if Crush sounds like Wish You Were Here or Stop Standing There or Push, it will be more interesting to me. I just enjoy to listen her songs with drums and guitars... And Tell me it's over, I listen that song oftenly, but still I will listen it even more if has sound like When You're Gone...
I like when she exploring with different music, but to me her best songs will allways be with drums and guitars, it doesn't need to be heavy, it can be ballad, I just hope that on AL7 there will be more drums and guitars.

i agree with you. in the past i used to think an artist wasn't a real artist if he/she didn't write the lyrics. But years ago i discovered the amazing world of vocalists and siging masters. I thought to myself: they're teelling the story through their singing, it's their voices and their hard work and vocal technique that they've worked for years or decades that make them artists so i changed my mind. The thing with Avril is that...she has just a few self-written songs and those in particular aren't even than bad, some of them really good actually. Most of her songs are co-written, maybe 4-5 or 8 writters and still, the lyrics are bad...I always wondered how a writting lyrics session looks like 'cause man... I get the TBDT lyrics (somehow), they were meant to be funny or stupid but a lot of them are like that. Some others in her career are just cringey. So idk if it's her fault 100% of not being able to write good lyrics or just that she (and her team/writters) always take the easy way and write easy lyrics, meaningless and just catchy, just to fit the ryme because they're lazy and don't care about the song or maybe the song doesn't have a clear message or purpose (bigger wow i'm looking at you) It's funny as I was actually just reading an old MTV interview with Avril from the The Best Damn Thing era that touches on some of these points. Here's a quote from Avril in the article: She also talks about how she wrote "Girlfriend" when drunk and that the chorus was written in two minutes, in addition to saying that most of the songs on the album are about fictional experiences. I know with the album Avril strived to create something really upbeat and fun, which I think she accomplished. However, I think this is also probably why The Best Damn Thing has some "funny or stupid" sounding lyrics. Not that this really applies to the writing of her more recent albums as this was in 2007 (and a lot can change in 13 years!), but it's still super interesting to get a brief insight into the writing process for one of her albums. Link to the interview for those interested.

Been a while since I’ve posted outside of the music discussion section of the forum and I’ve thought of posting this one in here before so here it goes. This one probably won’t go over very well and will fit this thread well since it’s kinda coming at one of her biggest hits but....
Alone > Girlfriend
Just as far as fun pop songs go, or maybe pop punk in Alone’s case, Alone tops Girlfriend in my opinion.

That's a hot take lol
I feel like Alone is less bratty than Girlfriend and has more of a meaning to it, so I can see why some might like it better. Musically though, I think GF is still better. The two songs sound very alike (I think Dr. Luke helped write both) so it would have been redundant to put both on the album. They made the right choice choosing GF and also picking it as the lead single. I don't think Alone would have had nearly the same impact.

In terms of TBDT I would have liked it better if Alone, All Because of You, I Don't Wanna Be and I Will Be made the album. Those songs are more varied lyrically and more enjoyable to listen to than the less personal lyrics and samey sound of a lot of the other songs that make the album too one-note for me.

I always wondered what a version of TBDT would sound like that was more pop punk before Dr. Luke was brought in. I think the album was originally supposed to sound more like OOTG and Contagious and a whole album like that would have been awesome. I also think she wouldn't have lost as many fans due to the "bratty" image.

They were sold to a Japanese duo called Puffy AmiYumi but they're performed in English. I don't think they changed much on them cause its really easy to imagine how Avril would have sung them. I listen to them more than most of TBDT

I remember now that I've seen the first video. The second song sounds like a mix of Take It (lyrically) and IAGWIW with a little Disney-ish flair. Still, I enjoy TBDT the way it is. I think she still delivered on the sound and style of music. It is a very loud guitar and drum driven record with the right touch of orchestral ballads. She perfectly executed that balance on TBDT. Probably, the only complaint about TBDT is the bratty-ness of the songs. That theme didn't age well.

I actually had the song downloaded from the internet and it said it was by avril lavigne and i thought it was fake, but i still enjoyed the song. Now i found out it was meant for Avril. D: never heard the second one tho they both sound SO Avril lol

I think if they did choose Alone to be the lead single for TBDT instead of GF, it would be the same situation as choosing Don't Tell Me (instead of MHE) as the lead single for UMS.
