How To Be A ’00s Rock Chick, According To Avril Lavigne
Written By Sam Murphy on 06/15/2017
June is Millennium Month on the interns. We’re celebrating all things ’00s, looking back on iconic artists, albums, outfits, trends and more. Over the course of the month, you’ll be hit with features, lists, playlists and throwbacks all leading up to our Millennium Bug party in Sydney at the end of the month. Grab your tix here.
Right, we’ve had enough. Everyone wants to be popstars nowadays and we’ve lost sight of one of the most important characters on this planet – the humble rock chick. ’00s Avril Lavigne was the ultimate rock chick. She was badass, had no regard for the rules and she played a guitar. She was a fashion icon of the ’00s and yet she got there by trying to be nobodies icon. We’ve decided it’s time we learnt how to all be rock chicks again so we’ve tried to figure out some lessons from the ultimate RC (rock chicks, obvs), Avril.
Throw Shit Around, Go Nuts
This one is really important. Don’t be afraid to disrupt things. It’s important that you have a disregard for cleanliness and precious objects. “I like to rock out, I like throw shit around,” Lavigne said back in her heyday and she proved it with various music videos where she was very disruptive. You’ll feel rude at first but then you’ll get used to it.
Scream And Holler
Don’t be quiet. Nobody has ever attributed rock ‘n’ roll to low volume and Avril got that. “I like to scream, I like to holler,” a very angry Avril said at the time. This was all part of her getting her “anger out,” which is a very important part of the RC persona. Don’t keep anything inside. You’ve got a voice, now use it.
Don’t Be Punk
Whoah, whoah, whoah. You thought because you were a RC that you could be punk as well? Nope punk is a totally different thing. You see, rock is a little more commercial and according to Avril, “Punk is so not commercial,” it’s actually a little, “delinquent.”
“Maybe I have an attitude and I have a lot more edge to myself than a lot of artists do,” she said about why people tried to call her punk. But they’re the characteristics of a rock chick not a punk.
And Then You Will Be Punk
So once you’ve shunned the idea that you’re a punk you will finally be a punk. That’s right. Disregard what we told you above because Avril says, “It’s more punk to tell people you’re not punk.”
Don’t Be Too Pop
We’re not going to trick you like we did above and tell you after this that you can be pop if you say you’re not pop. You absolutely cannot be pop. Rockstars and popstars are locked in constant battle and you can’t cross the line to the otherside. Avril did cross the line and she regretted it immediately. “I don’t like the image of me out there right now, it’s too pop,” she said.
Let People Brush Your Teeth And Then Spit On Them
This is a classic RC move. While on tour, Avril got one of her bandmates to brush her teeth and then when she didn’t know what to do with the toothpaste in her mouth she spat at him. Sure, it’s rude but it’s also very endearing.
Wear Cargo Pants, A Loose Tie And Leather Cuffs
Obviously.
Don’t Let Anyone Dress You
The music biz is all about stylists but if you’re a RC you can’t let any of them touch you. Avril’s backstage stylist told us while on the video for Sk8r Boi, “We don’t really dress Avril, Avril has her own style.” She’s just wearing the clothes that she “wears nominally.” Don’t be afraid to call stylists though and demand things from them. In the same backstage vid, Avril’s stylist says, “She called me five days ago and said that she wanted a vintage t-shirt that’s green with yellow writing.” What did Avril get? A vintage t-shirt that’s green with yellow writing.
Steal Shit From Malls
If you see it, it’s yours. Take chains from jewellery stores, try on clothes and dump them on the floor, take food from mall cops. It might get you in trouble but what’s more important? Your police record or your aesthetic?
Be Obvious
The RC aesthetic is not one based around intellect. You’ve gotta give it to everyone straight because you’re a shit-talking, opinionated, loud mouth. So don’t go making things complicated. “He was a boy, she was a girl, can I make it any more obvious,” Avril sings on Sk8r Boi and the answer to her question is no, you couldn’t. You’ve done an excellent job at being obvious.
Don’t Be Afraid To Embrace Your Emotions In The Middle Of A Party
You may think that being a RC is all about being tough but when the emotions hit don’t be afraid to embrace them. If you’re at a party and it happens, press play on a ballad and make your way to a deserted street where it had previously been raining but conveniently isn’t raining anymore.
