Actually now that I'm thinking about it this is what I think: I am not trying to attach the light to a DSLR, it is just a camcorder. The light in and of itself really has nothing to do with the camera itself at all. From my understanding people attach these lights to DSLRs and such to get a flash, which is why I'm guessing you need to the hot shoe so that it will coordinate with the camera and flash when you need it to. From my understanding a cold shoe is basically a mechanical device used to hold objects but has no electrical components. Well the light really doesn't need to coordinate with the camcorder at all, especially if it's continuous lighting for the purpose of filming in low or dark lighting. So in that case, is a hot shoe even necessary? I would think the cold shoe adapter should suffice. But I still am not sure. Am I getting closer? ETA: The LED light by the way is powered either by batteries or can be powered with external power sources. So like yeah it has nothing to do with the camera at all unless I guess you were trying to get it to flash or something?

Camcorder? Circa 1985? A camcorder as opposed to a DSLR or point-and-shoot camera, etc.

Found this on the Cold Adapter questions page from Amazon:
Question: Are there any negative consequences of buying this cold adapter without data transmissions? I plan to connect lighting and a shotgun mic to it. Thanks
Answer: Unless you are using a flash that needs to synchronize you don't need the connection. A Mic and video lighting won't use it. The exception is the Sony xlr adapter which does more complex stuff. There are possibly other Sony accessories that communicate too but for what you need it doesn't matter. audio goes through the Mic port and lighting shouldn't need to connect
Sounds like what I'm looking for.

You can probably get both better sound and video using your iPhone.

You can probably get both better sound and video using your iPhone. The cameras on iPhones are good but not really suitable for filming long videos IMO. Certainly don't compare to a $500 camcorder.

This is what you need. The problem with using the non-proprietary accessories is due to the fact the shoe is recessed and many accessories won't fit, even though the mechanical connection is compliant with the ISO 518 standard.

My 7 films at 4K. With a 5$ tripod adapter you'd be surprised how good it is compared to a camcorder unless you're going super high end.

I still wouldn't like recording long videos on it due to storage space. I make everything for YouTube so I like it to be pretty good quality. I've also used it once for a professional shoot.

So I can just get the cold shoe adapter then? And the light should work with it?

Absolutely. I guarantee it. The light requires no electrical or data connection to your camcorder.
