Seems like we forget that this song has finished making while making Let Go. From the comments of fans and OP, Let Go has become their and our fav because the album is so mature ideologically and the way Avril wants to against the world (revolt image). Regardless of the image the album projects, does Darlin have lyrics quality like Let Go has? I mean, I still cannot quite believe the Let Go lyrics with such maturity on thinking and how the lines link so well between, like more than half of the lyrics are not come from herself.
I really want to know if Avril is able to write lyric with the quality Let Go has if yes, I feel like she is gonna have no.1 again. This thought came up because of Fly
What're your thoughts ?

Of course Darling has the Let Go feel. It was from that time of her life. I am curious on how much Avril was actually involved with making the lyrics of the songs. And maybe how much she just had to roll with. And Avril was never fully the rebel girl last forever thing. She was a teenager who was discovering herself, the same goes for UMS & TBDT. But some way or another some parts of her try to hang on to the image she made back then, but i think that girl we saw is long gone. So can she write lyrics like that again? Maybe.

Honestly I take what Avril or any artist writes with a grain of salt. Avril said she had made some changes to Darlin, so who knows what it was like when she originally wrote it. She had a lot of help with the lyrics on LG and even on songs she has written herself, there could have been a ghost writer for all we know, maybe Evan or Chad made a suggestion here or there and went uncredited.

She had a lot of help with the lyrics on LG and even on songs she has written herself, there could have been a ghost writer for all we know, maybe Evan or Chad made a suggestion here or there and went uncredited. I like the point you made about ghost writers. For instance, if back in the day Avril had trouble writing a certain lyric and asked someone for advice (her mom or sister for example) and then used that advice in the song, she wouldn't give that person writing credit. I don't know if that is what you specifically meant, but in the case of what I explained (which I'm sure occurs with all song-writers often enough), anyone lending small advice like that wouldn't be a significant help to the song. So in the scenario I described, Avril's mom or sister wouldn't have made a significant impact on the song, and Avril would still have written a large majority of the song herself; therefore, it could stated that everything* in the song came from Avril's own ability to write songs.

I think she still has the ability to write songs like that era, but the music industry has changed a lot since she began. Now it's all about what record companies think will sell/be radio friendly. I honestly wouldn't mind if she went indie. Karmin is a fantastic example of going from a record label to being indie. They are enjoying themselves alot more and it shows. I feel like if Goodbye Lullaby had come out the way she wanted, it would have been more lyrical and driven by the vocals instead of RCA making her popify it. Not saying I hate the tracks she did with Max Martin to make the album more pop (I actually absolutely love them,) but it obviously wasn't the direction that she wanted to go in. It also has to do with who she works with when writing/producing the track. I could go into more detail about my opinions, but then I'd ramble and be all over the place haha.

Avril isn't a quality songwriter IMO. She couldn't even come close to writing another LG on her own - there's a reason it was her and a team of professional songwriters.

She might not come up with the most pro lyrics, but her melodies are for sure solid. And the lyrics she DOES come up with are usually good enough for what they're for even with ghost writers. But I agree, she's not crazy good, and usually who she works with isnt the clearest reflection of her own personal writing style. The group sessions usually end up being written poorly (take RNR and HTNGU for example which are pretty mindlessly written), or written quite well (like GYWYL, or 17 even). GL had some of her best lyrics imo.

Avril wrote the chorus for MHE as Butch actually revealed... Avril doesn't need ghost writers. I also think Sad Face sounded like it could be great, and that was written long before her trip to NYC

In my opinion, Darlin isn't anywhere near the quality of Let Go, at least lyric-wise. I use to take her word for it that she was the main songwriter on all the songs on her debut but comparing her self-written songs now to then, you can see the professional teams like The Matrix actually had a much larger role. It's a shame that she had a falling out with them since together they wrote amazing songs. And on that note, does anyone know what happened to the other writers on the album such as Peter Zizzo and Sabelle Breer?

I wonder if she plays the Piano for the Piano Songs on her own. I mean I don't really think she compossed Hush Hush or Innocence but it would be awsome if she would. I like her songwriting a lot but to be true who is a perfect writter? Everyone has there own opinion. Some people love this lyric more and others this lyric. I love it more when my fave artists write there own songs. I was really impressed when I red that she wrote the songs on GL on her own and produced them and played an instrument.

She could have pop songs with amazing lyric like Containgous, Alone.

The songs on her albums that Avril has played instruments on are:
LG: Guitar on Nobody's Fool
UMS: Guitar on Slipped Away
TBDT: Beer bottle on Girlfriend, she also recorded guitar for I Can Do Better but she isn't listed in the credits so it's possible they ended up not using it
GL: Guitar on 4 Real and Darlin, piano on Stop Standing There, Remember When, Goodbye, and Alice
AL: Percussion on Give You What You Like
For live performances:
LG:/TTSMU: Guitar on Things I'll Never Say, Naked, Mobile, and Tomorrow. In random performances she has also played on Complicated, Sk8er Boi, I think Unwanted, and Nobody's Fool
UMS/Bonez: Guitar on Don't Tell Me, He Wasn't, My Happy Ending, Nobody's Home, Who Knows, and a random performance here and there of Slipped Away I believe. She sometimes has also played on Take Me Away. Piano on Together, Forgotten, and Slipped Away. Drums on Song 2 by Blur
TBDT/Tour: Guitar on a few random performances of Girlfriend (we've also seen in BTS videos of the making of GF and an Avril foundation video that she can play this song on guitar), and the Dancing with the Stars performance of Hot. Piano on When You're Gone. Drums on Runaway and Hey Mickey by Toni Basil
GL/BST: Guitar on some performances of What the Hell, Everybody Hurts, and Airplanes by B.o.B and Haley Williams. Piano on Stop Standing There
AL/Tour: Drums on Song 2 by Blur, otherwise she did not play many instruments this era, mainly just guitar on her usual songs (MHE, He Wasn't, DTM, etc.)
In her music videos:
LG: Guitar in Complicated and Mobile
UMS: Guitar in Don't Tell Me, He Wasn't, My Happy Ending, and Nobody's Home
TBDT: Guitar in Girlfriend, Girlfriend remix with Lil Mama, and The Best Damn Thing. Piano in When You're Gone. Drums in The Best Damn Thing
GL: Guitar in What the Hell and Smile, piano in Alice
AL: Guitar in Here's To Never Growing Up, Rock N Roll, and Hello Kitty. Piano in Let Me Go
Other:
She also played guitar solo on Knockin' On Heaven's Door at her performance at the Roxy in 2008

She's never played guitar live for Slipped Away and I would add KOHD and Pumped Up Kicks to the appropriate sections, but other than that, that list is all inclusive!
