Something that I was just randomly thinking about today but has always really bothered me are the lyrics in When You're Gone. "When you're gone, the words I need to hear to always get me through the day and make it ok, I miss you" is not a complete sentence/thought. It's like there's a word missing. It only makes sense on the final chorus when she changes it to "The words I need to hear WILL always get me through the day and make it ok, I miss you." Has anyone else ever noticed this? It has always really bothered me, to be honest. This has haunted me since the song came out, and I decided (maybe to shut myself up) that "I miss you" ARE the words she needs to hear etc. So it should read: When you're gone, the words I need to hear to always get me through the day and make it ok: "I miss you" so the colon is there instead of the word "are". I'm not sure if that's what she meant but at least this way, there is some grammatical sense.

I guess it always seemed to me that she was running two thoughts/sentences together 1) "When you're gone" and 2) "gone are the words I need to hear to always get me through the day and make it OK. I miss you..." Maybe it was a rewrite so it fit the tune?

I always had this interpretation, but it can totally be up to discussion as the lyrics are not clear and the other suggestions seem plausible to me.

Today is a sunny day and I started listening to Stop Standing There. It just gives me spring feelings and I love it.

It has always really bothered me, to be honest. I remember when I was 12 or so, and a friend of my parents who is an english teacher was trying to teach me the language so she suggested me to do an exercise to learn it better: i had to write down the lyrics from a song I knew without looking at the lyrics, so I chose When You're Gone and I remember when the part of "I miss you" came in, she was like: "this can't be right, you surely heard it wrong, it can't say that" and I was like: are you tELLING ME I DON'T KNOW AVRIL'S LYRICS??? HOW DARE YOU?? THAT'S WHAT SHE SAID!!" (ok, maybe not that dramatic, but I remember I was mad at her 'cause she didn't believe me until I played the song). So yeah, it always bothered me 'cause that memory still haunts me today xDD

Maybe you could understand it that way: When you‘re gone, (and) the words I need to hear to always get me through the day.. I miss you. Does that work? Or are the tenses wrong when you do it that way? I don’t know if that works in English but it could work in German.

They are 2 separate thoughts/ideas. “When you’re gone, the words I need to hear to always get me through the day and make it ok...” something something something... “I miss you.” Two different thoughts. She’s talking about these words she needs to hear from him to get her through the day and make things ok, then she says “I miss you.” Again, it only makes sense when the lyric is changed to “The words I need to hear WILL always get me through the day and make it ok.” My theory quite honestly is that literally Avril just didn’t write it correctly. She was likely focusing on what words sounded good without thinking about whether or not they made sense. It’s not the first time she has done this either. An example I can think of is some of the songs on UMS where the verses have no relation to the chorus. Like Who Knows for example. “How do you always have an opinion? And how do you always find the best way to compromise? We don’t need to have a reason. We don’t need anything. We’re just wasting time.” What does this have to do with living life like it’s your last day? Nothing.

The bridge of WYG is the bit that annoys me most. The “all I ever wanted was for you to know, everything I do I give my heart and soul” has always seemed kinda irrelevant to the rest of the lyrics.

I noticed her voice changed from TBDT onwards. Her voice got higher and girlier from this point on. For example, on the TBDT tour DVD, Sk8er Boi sounded bad imo. But I'm starting to think that it might have been the production on that DVD that made her sound that way. On other performances of that era she sounded good.
On TBS tour she sounded pretty good except for when she tried those stupid accents. Especially on songs like WTH. I firmly believe that was her choice. She was doing it for her own amusement. Otherwise I think it might have been her best vocal era. I honestly don't remember much of the AL era or how she sounded. But now her voice is high and can sometimes sound angelic or it's nasally or it cracks.

It’s likely a combo of her voice changing as she got older as well as working with different vocal coaches throughout the years.

I think she started seeing a vocal coach towards the end of the bonez tour and it showed. She improved immensely on that tour and it was for me her best vocal performances. Look at this ❤
