I don't like too much the mash up but I love the artwork, the side-Pose of Avril always reminded me of UMS cover

Random Avril thought I had the other day, I'm so jealous of the fans that got to see the What The Hell music video in 3D. I feel like seeing it in 3D in a theater would have been so awesome and enhanced the viewing experience. Did it only play like one time in 3D? why even have it in 3D if it's not gonna be viewed that way other places? idk random thought lol

I think it was for people who had 3D TVs and this is when 3D was thought to be the next big thing and then people hated it. To my knowledge they played the video for fans at album showcase events and they were brought into a theater and given 3D glasses. Apart from that, unless you have a 3D TV, it was never shown again anywhere.

Someone might have uploaded the 3D version on YouTube, but otherwise I don’t think they ever released it anywhere.

Okay thanks for the answer BogoGog24 ! It's a shame they didn't.
To further clarify: It's fairly easy to make a video 3D through post-converting it into various formats that trick your eye into fake perceived depth (in fact if it's the side-by-side format you can cross your eyes and "see it in 3D", displays just take this format and with the glasses make it so your eyes only see one or the other frame alternating rapidly achieving the same effect without having to go cross-eyed). So I can imagine that some fans have approximated the official release through a similar desire of getting to experience it and uploaded their results. A quick glance shows me one like that on youtube for example. However this method produces rather bad results and is not at all as spectacular as video actually shot on 3D camera rigs. So the real question here is: Was the WTH video officially shot on 3D cameras and if so was that version ever officially released anywhere? If it was also simply post-converted initially for those showings then the results would be fairly unspectacular and much like the 3D "everyone hates" anyway.

There’s this video of fans who got to see it:
This was the closest thing I could find to BTS about the 3D:
Since the video was also released in 2D I’m going to guess it was shot on a regular camera and then maybe rendered in 3D? They are able to view it on the set immediately after shooting so I’m not sure. There’s no info from the director about what kind of camera they used. Idk if you use a 3D camera if it’s possible to also show the footage in 2D?

Idk if you use a 3D camera if it’s possible to also show the footage in 2D? A 3D camera rig is often essentially just two cameras bolted together to record in sync (or one camera system with two separate lenses). So if you shoot in 3D you can simply use the one of the views as your regular 2D video. All 3D "is" is footage from two different viewpoints, to simulate our eyes being slightly apart, which when viewed back separately by each eye will cause us to perceive depth just like with our real eyes. Given the era this was in as well as the type of "event" it was I am fully sure it was just one of those "bad" post-conversions to get the 3D effect and that they actually shot in 2D.

I wonder what pops out in 3D because the video seemed pretty dull for 3D action.

I know this happens all the time, but I felt so bad for Avril when I was watching this paparazzi video that a fan account posted on Instagram. She got out of a truck with MODSUN to get something at a cafe and the paparazzi kept trying to talk to her and record her when she was obviously not engaging at all. You could definitely feel that she was uncomfortable from her body language alone.

I remember thinking what a cool idea for a video to have it in 3D and then never got to see it in 3D . Well I can imagine lol

lalullaby25 I took a few minutes to try and help your imagination a bit! The kick in the video is fairly quick (it's 18 frames long which is less than a second) and the camera position doesn't shift enough for Avril to be in a similar enough pose to make an approximate stereograph based on actual perspective right from the video so instead I just took a single frame, quickly drew a depthmap and applied that for some trickery to create essentially a small wigglegram. The results sadly aren't great due to the video being really low resolution (the effect comes over better if you display the video a bit smaller) but I hope it helps your fulfill your wish a little bit.
Perhaps if I have more time another day I'll look into if I can do better.
