I am small and the world is big. She wants to go home But nobody’s home They’re lazy. And I’m not dissing her; UMS is in my top 3. Don't forget this gem: "I miss you, I miss you so bad. I don't forget you, oh it's so sad." Excuse me, but isn’t it an emotional moment? Or when something bad happens to us,our thoughts goes straight from Shakespeare’s plays? Or is ABO a wise song, because it contains the word “succulent” that is rarely used by people in general speech? Didn’t Avril take the world with her simplicity, her “girl next door” image? And why complain about its angsty teen mood when she was a teen back then?) I just can’t get it (: yeah I grew out of it too, but as I remember it was relatable af when I was that age I’m not a fan of digging lyrics from music, I listen to it to get emotions or to find the right mood, something relatable to my current state. And Avril pulls emotions with her voice, and she does this perfectly, especially on UMS (not my most favorite album though). So, what about I’m With You? People consider it as her best song (I agree), lyrics and topic are pretty simple and basic, aren’t they? But this song is perfect in its simplicity, right? Sorry, I just wanted to point it out

Sorry, I just wanted to point it out I am not disagreeing that Slipped Away is an emotional song. She manages to deliver the lyrics with a lot of emotion, which IMO is what saves the song from being a complete flop. However, that doesn't mean the lyric isn't still poorly written IMO. If it was really that emotional, surely she could have written something way better than "I miss you so bad, oh it's so sad." A 10-year-old could probably write something better than that and Avril was 18/19, with experience of working with professional writers, and even having another writer writing the song with her. With TWO experienced songwriters, that is the best they could come up with? I don't know where people are getting that I am "complaining" or somehow insulting her "teen angst" music. It's a description. Her early music was described by fans as well as critics as "teen angst." Because she was a teen writing about things that teenagers go through. I never said that was a bad thing- it's a simple description of her early music. I'm saying that people like to call UMS such a "mature" album even though it's a teen angst album just like LG and TBDT are. I don't see how it is really more mature than those albums just because she is being all moody and angry. I think IWY is a great song, but a tad overrated. The lyrics are simplistic but I think it also suits the song. What really has always made IWY stand out to me is her vocals and the production, more so than the composition of the song itself. For example, until the AL tour, I never really liked how she performed it live. The way it was produced in the studio and her vocal performance is what really made it for me.

This may bring me some heat from UMS fans but remember this is my unpopular opinion about one of my favorite albums. HDIF and SA are pretty weak. I enjoy listening to them but the middle of HDIF makes me skip the song. And SA makes me cry but the lyrics are not great, I think the only reason I find it emotional is because I know Avril wrote it for her deceased grandfather.
Plus, Forgotten and Together sound very similar. I think the reason I like both songs is because I've seen the live version on the Budokan DVD. When performing Forgotten it sounds more like a rock song than Together.
Which brings me to another discovery, I believe the reason I like UMS so much is because the Bonez Tour is my favorite. Since it looked and sounded like a rock show.

It's so powerful and emotional, it's actually made me cry before. But I totally accept your opinion, of course.
I can understand why most people find HDIF boring, though. It is indeed very repetitive and has some of the weakest lyrics Avril's ever used. If it wasn't for that powerful bridge and outro, I'd surely skip it too.
I agree with you about SA, it's another of Avril's weakest songs lyrically, but I always feel bad when I mention this, because I know it's about her grandfather's death, it must mean very much to her.
And I too think "Forgotten" and "Together" sound very similar, they both have this very dark, dramatic sound and this explosive chorus, especially the last one. I still like "Together" more, it's actually one of my favourite songs of Avril's. It sounds lighter or something (its key is Gm; "Forgotten" is written in Cm) and I like the lyrics more. Those of "Forgotten" are a bit too teen-angst-y imo.

Yea the middle, idk I'm weird. I often wonder what it would sound like acoustic.
I love the chorus of Together and the piano opening of Forgotten. Despite being similar I love that they're rock piano ballads. If she ever wanted she can make a melody of the two songs and sing them live. Doubt that will ever happen though.
