You don’t even necessarily need to buy music these days. You can stream it. As long as no one is downloading it illegally, it’s ok.

Exactly, I wonder how Avril herself thinks about that, she also must see how other artists promote their stuff, right?
There are indeed a lot of artists who keeps going and boom a new songs is just there out of nowhere and look at september 19th and nothing nowadays. almost 2 months have passed since HAW.. 

Uh, I know that Western Europe and North America run a bit differently, but I think you wont find a computer-literate person in Eastern Europe without a notable stash of 'illegal' content. Personally, I've been pirating many stuff for over 15 years, because when I started we were notably poorer here, especially younger folk, so it became a habit. To just make a picture of the scope of how widespread it is - when I was updating from Windows ME to Windows XP, the small computer shop that I went in to get a new windows just installed a pirated version on it, and it cost me like 5€ I think. Currently I have Windows 7, haven't given a cent for it. Movies? I have bought some of them, but I like to watch many obscure stuff which isn't easily available, especially not round these parts, consequentially I have downloaded well over a terabyte of flicks in the last 7 years or so. I think piracy became so widespread also because up to 2011 it was technically legal to use anything you downloaded, as long as you didn't resell it. 
With that said, I've probably listened to Avril's music more times legally than not, so I was not entirely freeloading, ha ha.
