Sometimes in our Avril only threads, we comment something about Taylor and we veer off topic. This is the place to turn to so that the thread won't become about Taylor instead of Avril. Not to be confused with the Taylor Swift only thread under Music Discussion. This is a thread to talk about both. Like when we talk about Taylor's relationship with her fans and wish Avril would do the same. Or how they both have boy-bashing songs. Or to discuss their approach to writing records. This not a thread to drag Taylor nor Avril. There are similarities and differences between them. Mods if it's in the wrong section please move it.

I feel like comparisions between the 2 are so easy to make, because most of people here are fan of the boths of them, i even know some people who completly drop Avril for Taylor because they found out Taylor was everything they wanted Avril to be. And also feel like many Avril fans are bitter towards Taylor because of that, they think she stole her fanbase by made the same things, sometimes i read comments on ATRL forums that make me so laugh.. It's not Taylor's fault if she made her Max Martin songs so better, they were personal, they were HER.. Avril could have done the same and not make What The Hell etc, didn't she make I Will Be with him, did she??
Avril was one of the inspirations of Taylor, of course there can be similiar sound like Shake It Off that reminds to The Best Damn Thing, but it doesn't mean that she stole Avril sound, because TBDT was inspired by other songs too. But the 2 made a different career path, Taylor started officialy as a country singer, Avril was sent towards this genre when she was a little kid, then Taylor started to change, to make different genres, to explore, she made pop-rock/aren-rock, dubstep, dance-pop, electro-pop.. Her moving to pop was gradually and she could estblished as a songwriter, so her fans know that she can make any genre but the lyrics are the same. I always said that Avril fans were so focused on sound and maybe Avril too, so the lyrics were always push aside, that's why there are fans shocked by Tell Me It's Over and that's why Avril think that upbeat songs have to have no personal lyrics.. I'm still waiting for lyrics like Anything But Ordinary or Who Knows.. I don't count Souvenir and Bigger Wow because, don't know, they feel so high school movie soundtrack.

Yeah I think lots of Avril fans moved on to Taylor around the GL era because Taylor released Speak Now while Avril was in her gap period.
Has anyone else noticed how Come Back Be Here sounds extremely similar to WYWH though? I wonder if Taylor heard it and then subconsciously worked it into her own song without realizing it. It’s so bizarre how similar they sound that I can’t imagine both of them coming up with the exact same melody and structure by accident.

You guys are right. I heard Avril's songs from 2011 and I heard Taylor's songs also. But I personally like Avril's songs and I thought her songs are different from Taylor Swift, different from any other artists. There is no one like her. I hate to say this but when she will close her eyes we will always miss her and her place is always remain empty. No one can take her place right?

^ yes I've noticed that too. It's very rare that I mix Avril's songs with other artists in playlists. Maybe a few songs sound similar to another artist and I add them sometimes (Come back be here, since you been gone, bring me to life). I think it's because of her voice, it's very distinct.
I have to admit something about Taylor and it's messed up. I seriously judged Taylor hard. It all started when my friend and I were at Kohl's trying on Abbey Dawn when one of Taylor's songs played. My friend said this is Avril right 🤦. I was like noooooo!!! and my childish self started disliking her. I then bought into the persona the media made up about her. But in the back of my my head I knew Taylor had some great songs, had the boy bashing songs I craved (seriously I really love those type of songs), and honestly was starting to make even better songs than Avril.
I don't want to say Taylor took Avril's spot in my life or in the music industry because that's not true. I still consider myself a casual fan of Taylor because I don't really like all her songs nor have I listened to most of her older stuff. And in the music industry...Avril continued down the path of brattiness while Taylor evolved. And well I've started to notice a lot of Taylor's moves like being really detailed when speaking about her music and her connection to her fans. Something I wish Avril would do more of. Like when Zach Sang asked her about IFILWTD and she evaded it and never really gave him a response. Why do that??? Also after going through some shit these last 5 years and making a record for almost 3 why not make videos of her process to share with fans. Similar to Taylor's videos of the making of Reputation. Why so quiet about your new music? As a fan I crave more info about the songs.

I always hated that part of Avril honestly, she has this idea of the songs being interpretated by her fans that she must delete in her head. If you tell me about the inspiration of the song, it doesn't mean that i can't give MY OWN interpretation too!

I really started listening to Taylor's music around 2011 i think it was the exact same period when Avril released GL... i started with Speak Now, i love what she did there, the entire album was written and produced by herself and Nathan Chapman! Her storytelling is so vivid that you can imagine every single word that she sing, i love her passion, i love the way she play with us in her booklet (is a thing that i missed in the Reputation era) and the way she seems to have a concept for every era, and you can tell by reading the intro that she write in the booklet from Speak now to 1989 and the magazine related to Reputation!
She is so inspired, she put so much passion in her work, thats what i was talking about when i said Avril has basically none... Taylor even remixed "Love Story" and make it new and still sing it in her tour, so i'm not saying that Avril can't sing old singles, but at least do it in a midley and concentrate more on the new stuff, remix them, play with your imagination, your an artist you can do anything you want, it's a gift that she is wasting in my opinion!
And of course i'm not saying that Taylor is better than Avril or viceversa, i just saying that maybe Avril can learn something from her, be inspired again!

I'm not a Taylor fan, but since among the genres I love there is the Country too, I must say that her debut albums are very pleasant. I have to say that some of Avril & Taylor songs have great similarities, but I think because they both come from the Country school as a root.

I did notice she remixed Love Story with a more modern sound to fit her new style. I think it was during 1989? I've also noticed how some other artists spice things up. For example, I've been listening to Rihannon by Stevie Nicks and checked out some live versions. And I noticed she's changed it up a bit over the years. Avril has done it before too with Losing Grip.
Or I'd also settle for a medley like if she wanted to keep all her singles on the setlist put together Smile, HW, HTNGU, RNR together or WYWH, WYG, Goddess.

I started listening to Taylor since the album 1989 because I like that genre better than her previous records. I do love 1989 and Reputation and I'm a fan of those 2 records. Red is also nice but not all songs. All Too Well is one of my faves tho.
In the gap of Avril I was indeed listening to 1989 and Reputation a lot. Especially 1989 was non stop on repeat, those songs doesn't get old (yet?) I like the things Taylor does for fans so much! She's amazing!! her personality is awesome and before I was involved with her music I always thought she was spoiled but I came to know she truly isn't! She's down to earth and listens to fans. I wish Avril could do that more, more meet&greets and be involved with fans more. Fans are the ones who kinda 'make' you.

Yeah something I like that Taylor does is she pretty much revolves her shows around what the fans want. She pays attention to what they say online and does her best to play the songs they want and stuff. That’s why All Too Well was included quite a few times in the rep setlist. Apparently fans had also complained about the merch in 1989 so she said “We tried harder this time. We heard you.” She also realizes that everything these days is posted on social media and that fans know the setlist beforehand so pretty much on every tour she’s done she’s always included surprises that are different each show, like switching up the songs, singing covers, or bringing out special guests.
I wish Avril would try to do more of what fans want. Play more of the songs fans want to hear instead of just old singles we’ve heard a million times. And make an effort to keep her shows interesting by switching up the songs. I don’t expect her to be able to get high profile special guests for each show but I’d be happy with her just performing some old songs each night, like album cuts from her past records. Like Taylor did each night for rep, I mean she dug deep and pulled out stuff going back to her first album and even singing bonus tracks,

I've been an Avril fan since 2002, since the "Complicated" video appeared in MTV and I felt like I could use "boys" clothes and that would be fine, that a girl could love rock and still be a girl etc. And I believe that my favorite era was the GL era. She was releasing some videos in Youtube, showing the backstage and a little bit about her life, I remember how at that time I felt she was really nice and funny.
I remember hearing "Love Story"by Taylor but it wasn't something that really interested me at that time, maybe too romantic, I don't know...so Taylor wasn't ever someone that I was searching news about or having her songs in my ipod (like Avril). Than, I met Paramore, and kinda moved to them when Av released the "AL" and everything about that era was weird imo.
Two years ago I got obsessed with 1989 (yes, I'm like that, I fall in love with albums only after 1 or 2 years (sometimes 4!) of the release), and started to pay more attention to Taylor (her and Hayley Williams are friends, and because I really like HW I thought "hmn, she might be a nice person as well", and discovered a whole new world of fanbase and a totally different world where the fans were really considered important and essential for the artists (Not that I don't believe that Av thinks her fans are important, she just doesn't demonstrate it a lot). Well, "Reputation"came out, I love it. Now I'm discovering her old songs, some of them I like and some of them I don't.
With Avril, I really like all her songs until GL, some songs from the AL era and with this new album I'm still in that phase were I will probably only love it in 2 or 3 years ahahah. Avril will always be nostalgic and she was very important to a lot of people of my generation. I just can't deny how I wish she could get closer to her fans. In the begging of the internet era it was acceptable, she wasn't an online person, but now... we can see she already knows how to use it, but she stills not use it for her fans. Another thing is that I wish her concerts were more well produced, that she could spend more money with her concerts, like Taylor does.

But, for some reason, they changed it and decided to play TIWNS in the first day and Hello Heartache in the day I went. It wasn't bad, but I was so excited about TIWNS that it was a little bit disappointing... like, if you are doing a contest for the fans, keep you word!! We were all waiting for that old song
