People in Holland are thinking it's just a holiday... since the weather is good so many were going to the beach and it was so over crowded near sea that the government now want to take action and maybe close all stores too that aren't necessary such as clothing stores. We even got an NL-Alert message on our phones...

There are a hundred cases here so far in new zealand. Nobody has died and already this country has gone into full lock down for atleast four weeks. No public transport, schools closed and the only shops that are open is the grocery store.

As you may already know, unfortunately the highest mortality rates are recorded here in Italy. We have passed China. Yesterday and today there was a slight decline, but the road is still long and complicated. Everything is closed, people are all at home, and are all desperate because we cannot work and there is no money. I still don't know how long this nightmare will last, but I sincerely hope that it will end soon.

There are a hundred cases here so far in new zealand. Nobody has died and already this country has gone into full lock down for atleast four weeks. No public transport, schools closed and the only shops that are open is the grocery store. As of Feb 22, according to the World Health Organization's daily situation report #33, Italy had 9 confirmed cases and 0 deaths. As of yesterday's report #62, Italy had 53,578 cases, 4,827 deaths and a death rate of 9.01%. No country wants their people to suffer the way they have in Italy. Clarification... When I say death rate, I'm taking the number of reported deaths and dividing it by the number of confirmed cases. That is by no means the actual death rate. This is because it does not include the estimated large number of people that will never be tested, because they had no symptoms, minor symptom, the short supply of test kits and various other reasons. This situation will eventually be analyzed to death. There will most likely be intelligent estimates regarding actual death rates. They do it every year regarding the seasonal flu. I have a lot of questions. I wonder how the preventative measures being recommended and practiced will affect the spread of the seasonal flu. It killed 34,000 people in the U.S. last flu season. Mostly old farts, like me.

Looking like Boris is to announce lock down for the U.K. tonight. Absolutely mad people can’t just follow instructions to stay in.

There's many people weighing in on Trump's "irresponsible" tweet about how we.. "CANNOT LET THE CURE BE WORSE THAN THE PROBLEM ITSELF". While I've got no idea why he thought using all caps to write this down was necessary, I also have trouble understanding a number of pundits on CNN, MSNBC, etc., who say how irresponsible it is to say such things. It is obvious that while we can shut down large swathes of economy for a while, we cannot do this for 6, 8, 12 months, no matter what the situation in hospitals ends up being. If this ends up going in a trajectory many are seeing as going, then we're going to arrive at a moment, where the "good" option will pose big dangers to many people still. If we end up on the first of May, and there's no end in sight, do we roll in whatever vaccines are technically able to be rolled out, and hope they aren't dangerous and are effective? Do we have a carousel of days when life would continue as normal, and days when we would hide in homes? Do we continue as normal despite no vaccines or other treatments, and tell people that if they get Corona they're on their own unless they're of a certain demographic that will still get a bed in a hospital? And if we go on a mix of measures, what happens with many people who will still be left without work? Leaving millions of people out on the street through no fault of their own would wreck a society already burdened by massive inequalities and "deaths of despair". The tent towns such as the one on Skid Row would become tent cities, crime would become rampant and overwhelming, and places like southern Italy, which already has a lost generation from 2008, would be pushed to the brink of catastrophe. Some might say, "but we can't sacrifice older people" for a great economy, but then we end up at the reality that unemployment under a quarantine is expected to go up to 30% in worst case scenarios - that's 200% higher than what was in the previous recession in the USA - if such an economy would last for months and months, not only there'd be an incredible number of people in a very precarious situation, but funds to pay pensioners would be drying up quickly, too - and hence, the same demographic we'd be protecting would be at an ever greater risk of sliding into great poverty. People need to keep in mind that even the current disruption will need an unprecedented effort to mitigate the consequences, and while there's some big 'slack' available through richer entities and people finally contributing their fair share of maintaining a healthy society and economy, that pool of wealth is not unlimited, and it cannot help if the world will be collapsing into itself.

This is a fluid situation, with an unknown outcome. All world leaders are going to have to make course corrections based on the best information available. This is not the end of the world. It will be rough for a while.

The older people in the US you speak of are holding trillions of dollars in life savings retirement accounts and though those accounts are smaller after these two hell weeks these folks still have a lot of resources to support themselves. So it’s not all doom and gloom. Things will work out just like they have after every other pandemic dating back to the Antonine Plague. We might not enjoy it, but rebalancing will occur.
