I think the conversation kind of strayed here from releasing music more often to her having another hit or becoming relevant. Personally, I just want music sooner. Hey maybe that can be AL7 title hehe
As for Katy, she will get attention for her music because she plays the PR game. Her recent song gained so much attention because she used Taylor Swift easter eggs. Causing TS fans to look for clues and stir up discourse online. Katy is also an expectant mother, engaged to Orlando Bloom, and an American Idol judge who gets paid a shit ton of money. Will her songs be huge hits, nope. But she will be out there. Meanwhile Avril releases a single or album and retreats into her house with the bare minimum of PR/promotion. Mostly sending out IG lives to her owns fans to stream her new music. Which we were already doing. For Avril to be relevant she'd need to step up her PR game with a huge collab, a PR romance ala Chavril, or other scandalous ways. But I don't want that for Avril. I just want to hear those country songs. Girl release an EP already.

^ I agree. At this point Avril is an icon/legend artist, sort of like Britney Spears. They don't need to do anything to remain relevant at this point. Everyone knows who they are and they have an established career of hits and a dedicated fanbase. Avril has fans that have stuck by her a long time and have continued to do so even during her dry periods. That type of loyalty is rare I think for artists these days and should be rewarded with frequent new releases. Her fans care more about her releasing more music, regardless of how it ends up charting.

Yeah I couldn’t care less if what she releases charts as long as she’s passionate about it and I like it lol. I’ve no idea what’s been in the charts for the last 10 years and quite frankly don’t want to know because charting doesn’t often equal quality.

i would also love to see her chart high again, but not because of the charts itself, but because it can assure her money or a safe place. The less money you have, the less you can spend on making a great album, single or music video. That's why she will never release something like Look what you made me do.
that's why i want her to chart, not because the charts reflect any quality. In fact, GL and AL and their respective singles charted higher than HAW but most of us agree here that HAW is a better album. of course charts don't reflect quality.
I also think if she charts, it will motivate her to do better next time. But i guess she could just not care and spend the money she has to make new music ('cause she probably has more than enough).

But she is with BMG, which I think focuses more on "legacy" artists like her. They know she isn't going to have huge chart toppers. But they still allow her to work on a record for 3 years. I wouldn't be that concerned about funding either, she's been writing and recording a lot in her home studio lately which definitely saves the label money.
Currently the top 10 songs on the Billboard Hot 100 are rap/hip hop, the #1 song this week is Ariana and Lady Gaga's "Rain on Me," one of the few pop songs in the top 10. These days the biggest hits are usually rap/hip hop or pure pop, I don't see Avril releasing anything like that in the near future (or ever lol) so her chances of gaining a big hit are incredibly unlikely no matter the quality of the song. She would at least need a big collaboration to have any chance. Maybe that is why she wants to try country songs, though country radio is not kind to women, even established artists.

That's true. But still she needs money for music videos. I guess that's why they couldn't make a decent video for DB and scrapped the idea, the song screams huge budget for a music video, even tho these days music videos are a lot cheaper and you can still make something pretty good. I guess she has the money, maybe the idea for the music video was just trash. But for example, i like the Devil music video, but i think it could've been better. But yeah, who knows if she even has great ideas for music videos.
Regarding the music style, it's always the same story, rock, pop, hip-hop or whatever new trend comes, and the cycle repeats. We had a lot of hip-hop in the 90's and they were dominating the charts, but the 2000's came and even tho the rock style didn't last too long but at least it has huge and made the emo-music huge. And then pop again (Lady gaga, katy perry, Taylor). So i'm hopping the cycle will repeat. I noticed a lot of songs started to include more real instruments and a lot of guitars again. So maybe, pop-rock will comeback soon, especially with our nostalgic generation.
You always need a big act to break the scene, Billie made it with this dark-pop, weird sounds and all that stuff. Avril (even tho not the first) made with female pop-rock back in the day. Lady Gaga basically born as a Madonna 2.0.
I guess if a young artist will do pop-rock again and it becomes a hit, it will become a trend again, so maybe that's when Avril will have a chance to do what she's best at. Or who knows, maybe she will be the one to make a pop-rock hit again. You never know. Probably not, but i really do think rock (pop-rock, emo-rock) will comeback soon. This depressive-anxiety generation is craving for music from the 2000's Lol xD

Maybe I'm wrong, but Avril with this latest album has shown that she isn't interested in being "Mainstream" anymore. She does what she likes, not trendy stuff and that's why I don't think she'll ever do hip hop or something like that. As Bogo well said, artists like Avril or Britney who in the past have had a huge impact on the music industry, have been icons of an entire generation, I think that the charts now are the least of their thoughts. What have they yet to prove? Avril must continue working on music that she is really passionate about. Her fans will always be there, she knows that, but she must understand that isn't possible to release an album every 3 years. We are no longer in the 2000s (unfortunately because in those days there was amazing music).

Katy in fact is about to release her new album this year Katy Perry has been flopping with each release. That’s why there hasn’t been an album tbh. That’s why she was releasing singles, not albums xD not quite sure if that’s what the other person commenting wants Avril to become. Surly, having more new songs out is always nice but it really enjoy full albums, with stories told and message. Separately released singles are usually not following the message or they are different in sound.

Some days without a performance of WAW did me good. I think this is my favorite even if she messed up slightly. Her voice 😍. Plus her top looked hot. Wish we could have seen it.

I’m just hopeful that maybe appearing on a widely watched show like this will help people remember she’s still around and doing more mature music than maybe what they last remember from her. If they go to check out the song and see she has a new album out, I hope maybe they’ll feel inclined to check it out.
