Her basic production has become much softer and more pop. It's a shame. Totally agree. Half of AL had pure pop sound. I wish Avril returned to the alternative rock or post-grunge-ish sound that she had on Let Go and UMS. I appreciate that TBDT had a decent rock-ish sound too. But it was closer to punk than post-grunge and that's why I prefer LG and UMS. I didn't mind most of GL because she wanted a softer, more stripped back sound but on AL when it comes to songs like RNR it just feels like they should be a bit more hard hitting

In my opinion, I hope she doesn't go back to that sound. I kinda want something new from her, and so far, AL hasn't really acomplished that. :/

I actually love the production of GL (except for WTH) and I think it was great for the album to create the right mood. AL is the problematic album when it comes to production. Mainly the Martin Johnson songs.

I want something new from her lyrically (things like 17 and GYWYL were good for that but overall there was too much reliance on writing about the same sort of stuff) and something new musically would be good too. Poppy melodies are fine, she's always had that, but less poppy production

The lyrics and melody are just so good I can ignore the production but it would be better with a more basic pop/rock production the way it sounds live

For me Let Go is pure pop rock with some alternative/grungy guitar-influenced sounds
A lot of critics praised that alternative/grungy vibe on the guitar sound from Let Go:
* "Let Go was the alt. rock, grungy soundtrack to many childhoods of the naughties" - The Boston Theater
* "Some of the songs are hard, with grungy undertones" - Modern Rock News
* "Avril Lavigne came to limelight at a very young age and was signed by Arista records when she turned 16. Her grungy pop-rock sound appealed to teens worldwide." - Famous People
* "She’s a sweet pop songstress with a proclivity for punk and big, slightly grungy guitars" - Now Toronto
* "Sure, the guitars are loud and a bit grungy" - The Globe and Mail
* "Lavigne's grungy angst rock" - Chicago Tribune
* "She came on the scene in 2002. Her music was grungy and real" - GC Magazine
* "The pop-punk princess burst into the mainstream in 2002 with her album “Let Go.” Her grungy sound appealed to teens worldwide and brought her an array of awards." - The Jakarta Globe
* "The album [Let Go] offered a combination of calculatedly angry choruses and guitars that gently processed, the remnants of the post-grunge's hangover" - Universal Guide of Rock music: from 1990 until Today
The Best Damn Thing on other hand was more pop-punk influenced.

Let Go - post-grunge(Unwanted, Losing Grip), pop-rock, power pop(Sk8er Boi).
The song "I'm With You" is certainly a rock ballad. It's not pop-rock.
Under My Skin - post grunge, alternative rock.
The Best Damn Thing - Pop, pop-punk (with a more commercial pop sound), pop-rock (if you consider "When You're Gone" to be pop-rock.)
Goodbye Lullaby - Pop (with some pop-rock influences)
Self-Titled - Pop, pop-rock, industrial rock(Bad Girl)
