The coronavirus pandemic and social distancing have made us alter some of our traditional Canada Day plans. But our wonderful nation was still celebrated on July 1 in many fantastic ways, including a special concert from the Ministry of Canadian Heritage featuring performances by beloved Canadian artists, like Alanis Morissette, Sarah McLachlan and Avril Lavigne.
The special, which aired on CBC and was streamed online, also featured appearances by Ryan Reynolds and Olympian Zach Bell, and it was hosted by Serena Ryder and Pierre-Yves Lord.
Avril was one of the early performers of the musical event. She sang her new single, “We Are Warriors,” which was originally released to support international nonprofit organization Project Hope and its COVID-19 relief efforts.

The virtual Canada Day special also included performances from Paul Brandt, Corneille, Charlotte Cardin and Loud.
At the end of the show, fans were treated to songs by iconic Canadian musicians, Sarah and Alanis. The latter performed "Thank U," from her 1998 LP, Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie. It's true that we do have a lot to be thankful for right now!
Sarah sang an emotional rendition of "World on Fire" with her band out on the Vancouver waterfront.
Alanis sang "Thank U" in honour of her iconic album Jagged Little Pill's 25th anniversary in a striking socially distanced performance featuring different screens and lanterns.
The special highlighted the breadth of Canadian talent and had everyone coming together.
