Some of you will remember how much I love my music (or maybe you won't, but whatever ). I had over 200gb on my laptop blah blah, anyway, my external HD died a few months ago and I bought a new one and was honestly planning to back all the music up again, but I didn't.... and then my laptop died and I lost everything I've spent the last 3 weeks putting CD upon CD back into my laptop, I'm soooo bored with it... I'm only on 70.44gb now And that, ladies and gentlemen, is why you should always back stuff up! Lesson learned, serves me right... but still...

I'm so glad I did a backup of those 2000 or 3000 songs on Saturday No really, my player once lost all data in one night, every now and then I remember what I still haven't added to my digital collection. (that happened when? 4 years ago?) You're right, backup that stuff, saves a lot of time and nerves.

I forgot to reply to you on last.fm Anyway, I was thinking of buying a new external HD to store up all of my music. How long has it been since you bought yours? Do they die out easily?

I don't know how much music I have in GB, but I do have a full, very heavy drawer full of CDs and a lot of digital albums too. But I have had my share of computer problems, I didn't lose anything, but I know how frustrating and stressful they can be. I have a backup of my previous computer, I should probably backup my current computer soon! www.planetcalypsoforum.com/forums/images/smilies/computer.gif

Unless the hard drive itself crashed, your files are recoverable. I do this for people all the time. Even if Windows is corrupted, as long as the file tables are intact, you can move your files to another device with an inexpensive adapter. For $15, I bought an adapter that allows me to connect any internal drive to any computer through its USB port. I found one on amazon for you. Cost £4.99 FREE UK delivery. www.amazon.co.ukIf you need any help, just let me know.

I had mine for a few years, I'm not very tech minded so I honestly couldnt tell you how long they last. The one I've got now has a lifetime warranty or something though so it shouldn't die!

So 200GB? At what bitrate do you rip them to? 256? 320? FLAC/ALAC?

^ I was wondering that too. Higher quality files, especially lossless, take up more space than standards mp3s.
I checked out how much music I have on my computer, and it says 36.38 GB. My files range from mp3 to AAC and 128 kbps to 320 kbps. I don't encode my music files higher than 320 in order to save space. As long as the bit rate is above 128, I usually don't hear quality loss.

If I could remember what formats I have in my collection beside mp3... I know there are two others hiding somewhere And thank godness there is someone else who doesn't hear a quality loss when you have a bit rate 128+. My teacher always complains when he gets to hear something with 128 because it sounds so bad to him

I can definitely tell the difference between mp3 bitrates, and I'd happily undergo a blind test to prove it.
The difference between 320kbs mp3 and FLAC? Not so great. There's no reason not to use FLAC if you have heaps of storage space, though.
