The video only got those views because the old admin of the old bandsids site had some sort of technique to help the video get so many views when it first came out www.wired.com/2008/06/avril-lavigne-f/ i mean it's obviously not the only way it got so many but it probably helped her reach that milestone Her iconic moment is when she first came out and she wore the tie. Everyone else started wearing a tie because of her. At the time it was like revolutionary lol

For better or for worse, this is one particularly cringe-iconic twitter moment for her:
She would've gotten a way bigger reputation hit if this happened a few years later in a much more heated sociopolitical environment, I think.

^ the thing is... she's true. There's nothing racist to it. She absolutely adores Japan and it was more like a tribute.
People were very mean to her at the time. I understand her anger and I think that was well remembered to bring it on.
I don't want to make this a political conversation but I just want to add that people at the time and specially nowadays stand up for things like this to call it racist and forget to analyse the situation. Taken out of the context one may find it odd but if dig a little (it doesn't even have to be that deep) you find that a) she made a song for a Japanese doll; b) she's fascinated with the country and culture; c) this was a gift to them; d) it was filmed there and its full of Japanese people in the video having a great time; e) it was very well received in Japan and they love her over there.
Conclusion: nothing racist to point here.

I wasn't expecting this but it's a great idea! Seeing as the other thread pointed out some amusing things to me from over the years I hadn't seen yet I hope this one will show me some moments I missed with the opposite vibe.
Though before I opened the thread I knew exactly what I was going to post and given the last few posts it seems appropriate to point out the iconically controversial: "Mina sako arigato, k-k-k-kawaii"

Everyone else started wearing a tie because of her. At the time it was like revolutionary lol oh! i had no idea of this...LOL i guess i was too little at the time. So... i know it's probably not "morally correct" to do that... but these days all fandoms do the same. They stream the music video with many devices and many accounts and they know how to beat the algorithm. Arianators, selenators and especially kpop fans. It's not "fair" but at the same time it's also a way of helping your favorite artist. It's like buying her CDs instead of just listening to them on spotify, right? it's the same thing to me. Sadly most of us are not 12-14 years old anymore with 24/7 free time to spend on streaming LOL I know what her fans did back in the day was different with the automated program (or whatever that was), but those became illegal pretty recently, maybe 5-6 years ago only (probably not accurate information here xD) But the same happens with singles and albums i guess. You can purchase the album multiple times, right? So....it's probably not "fair" but you can do it... xD What i mean is that maybe GF wasn't the big hit of the 2000s and maybe there were other videos that deserved that spot better than her (maybe). But it definitely shows she had a dedicated fandom back then, as well as Ariana, Taylor or BTS have now. BTS breaking YT records everytime they come back it's not because they are THAT famous internationally...nope. It's because they have a dedicated fandom. Is it "fair"? I don't know xD but it is what it is. I wouldn't take GF's credit away just because it wasn't achieved the "traditional way". But thanks for the info, i didn't know about that 😂😂

Girlfriend being the first video ever to hit 100M views on Youtube was iconic af. I still remember the tight race at the time between Girlfriend and this random "Evolution of Dance" video. Takes me back to old Youtube when everything was more content creator friendly and less corporate -- ahhh good times.
Also I think I said this recently in another thread, but one of my fave moments in Avril's personal life was when she decided to live in Paris for a while to study the language and embark on a bit of a self-discovery journey after her divorce. I've always thought it was such a ballsy move. It's not always easy to do something like that completely on your own and I love that she went for it and had that experience.

This can maybe considered either cringey or iconic, depending on how you look at it, but she inserted so much product placement for her own stuff in the WTH video. It was maybe a little overkill, but I think I kind of have to give her credit for taking the opportunity to promote her own stuff. Especially in the clothing store scene, they could have just used any old clothes, but using Abbey Dawn made it so much more interesting and creative.
We can’t forget the iconic scene in HTNGU when she comes out in the LG outfit! It was her own idea I believe too.
Putting a cockroach on her tongue for $100 lol Gotta give her credit for hustling!
Standing up for Britney during the media’s anti-Britney phase, telling them how stupid she thought the whole thing was and to leave Britney alone. Then showing up to her Vegas show years later and taking a photo together to show there was no bad blood between them.
Performing with Taylor at the 1989 tour. Taylor is my other top favorite artist next to Avril, so I thought it was awesome Taylor invited her to perform with her.

I've always thought it was such a ballsy move. It's not always easy to do something like that completely on your own and I love that she went for it and had that experience. Agree! I always thought it was cool that she wanted to learn French badly enough to actually go live there for a while. Since she never went to college or anything, maybe that was sort of her way of making up for that experience. I remember some people weren’t impressed and thought it was a normal thing anyone could do, but for her it was probably a big deal. To be that famous and live in a foreign country on your own and be learning the language as you go is scary, it’d be scary for anyone, but especially being a celebrity. And she probably wasn’t used to getting to make her own schedule and go where she wanted, her management was always the one to make her schedule and stuff, so for her it was like her chance to be independent for a while.

This whole video is pretty iconic, but I particularly like the parts where she was recording Girlfriend and they realized her beer bottle would fit perfectly in the key of the song. She also pepper sprayed creepy Dr. Luke.
Also 12:10 of this video, in the studio with Butch and the awkward hug goodbye lol

Avril is so endearing with her silly costume and her strange wit - like when she leaves just a second of uncertainty whether that middle finger is meant for the two reporters or not, ha ha!

I've thought of another. I remember on the Black Star Tour she was stuck at an airport for like 16 hours or something and they still managed to play the full 90 minute show on the same day they arrived. Also this whole fucking video of Avril trying to figure out how to sit on a camel and touching its hump is hilarious "I feel like I'm touching a boob!"

I wouldn't say this was iconic per say but it left me so happy when it happened!
