Let Go (20th Anniversary Edition)

One set that i always loved is the New Year's Eve performances. Losing Grip especially. 

I gotta be honest, I’m not really excited about this. I don’t care about this Gayle artist in the first place and doing a remix of a classic just feels like it will potentially ruin the song.

Supposedly Avril confirmed it on her IG story then deleted it soon after.

I still think it's better than nothing, but I'm kind of disappointed if that's the case. I'd much rather have a remastered version of the album with demos and live performances from the era as opposed to re-recordings/remixes with new artists.

No other thread is really appropriate for this until we open one for the 'Sk8ter Boi' movie after things are officially (if ever) announced. And the song DOES appear on Let Go so it seems the best place really.

While we have no idea how Avril is thinking of translating the song to the big screen we all seem to think it will be a high school based teen comedy. I have a different vision. One thing that has been asked previously is: Who is this movie for exactly? What demographic would be interested in seeing a movie based on an old (though extremely popular) song? I think the answer is (maybe) Avril Lavigne fans and those in their late 30's who grew up with the music.

Here's my out-of-the-box (and completely UNOFFICIAL) pitch just to prove there are many ways this could be made into an excellent movie that connects to audiences today (maybe!)


Title: "Sk8ter Boi"

Tag line(s): “The song was only the beginning” / “The song was only half the story”

Logline: Avril Lavigne’s iconic classic comes to life during the concert of the year when star-crossed high school lovers “B” & “Sk8ter Boi” are reunited and forced to confront their failed romance when Sk8ter Boi’s plans to propose to his girlfriend/opening act (and B’s longtime rival for Sk8ter’s Boi’s heart) Cassidy - whose mega-hit single “Sk8ter Boi” has made her the hottest singer in the country - go disastrously wrong after secrets are exposed and he needs B’s help so that he doesn’t lose Cassidy forever.


In my mind this takes place ten years after high school and relies on Cassidy being an 'unreliable narrator' whose song mis-represents what actually happened between B & Sk8ter Boi (to her advantage of course). It's is set entirely during the concert mentioned in the song (keeping locations and production costs low (and if Avril owns her own stage equipment she can rent it to the movie production and recoup some costs that way)) with flashbacks to high school as appropriate. It would also use songs off of the entire Let Go album for setting the scene and really dropping the audience into the 'Avril Lavigne Cinematic 'Verse'. As well as creating new music for both Cassidy and Sk8ter Boi to perform (and sell some soundtrack tie-in releases.)

There's more to it but I wrote this while battling insomnia so that should suffice for now. Anyway, I hope it proves there is more than one way to approach the material and there's a great chance that a very good movie Avril would be proud of producing could result.

p.s. Writing loglines for movies is fucking hard, and especially so for ones that don't exist as screenplays yet and you're making it up as you go along, so please forgive the quality of the writing. What is there is a proto first draft AT BEST but it does capture some of what I was going for.

A late release seems likely at this point considering how the anniversary is only a few weeks away and we’ve heard nothing about it, but like… it would have made a ton more sense to release it on the actual anniversary or at least somewhere close to it. What is the point of waiting?
