I agree, I appreciate the message she’s going for, but would want in a more mature way.

C'est la vie reminds me of Runaway lite.

Agree. I just wish she could find a way to do a song on this kind of subject and make it interesting and a bit deeper than “fuck them all”. Every other song this era has basically been fuck him fuck you fuck them and it’s like… can we have something better? Lol I agree and we always end up to the same conclusion: she needs a songwriter Back in time around 2004-5, in an interview she said that she does not like to read. I also remember that the Spanish fandom were bashing her because "How are you supposed to write lyrics if you don't read, if you don't improve your vocabulary, writting skills, perception, even poetry..." and I was so mad at them because I thought that were more unique to being a natural talent... how wrong was I. She really needs to learn new ways to communicate her ideas because her songwriting is part of her weakness. I know, she sings with an emotion (in the studio) and she know how to convey emotions but... since Goodbye Lullaby and onwards, her lyrics (the songs that are completely written by her) are getting simpler, repetitive and monotone. Her peak at her songwriting is "I Fell in Love with the Devil" and I wish she could deeper on that dark and introspective way.

Perhaps her lyrics have never been elaborated, but the rawness and how direct they are is equally or more valid for transmitting emotions. Her singing conveys emotions much better than most other singers and her simplicity is part of who she is, not a flaw. At this point I don't understand those criticisms. In fact, songs with more elaborate lyrics like Tell me it's over or Dumb blonde seem quite mediocre to me. She is not a poet, she is a singer, she does not have to write like Lana del Rey.

C‘est la vie is a cool, fun song. I like it The first seconds of the chorus remind me so much of „Grow“ (it‘s the same melody) and the riff in the bridge is basically almost the same as „Jetlag“ from Simple Plan 😅 Yes. Same as grow. I noticed immediately

If you have a great voice but can’t write great songs then you get help from a songwriter. If you can write great songs but can’t sing then you get a singer to sing them. I’m not ever expecting Taylor-style lyrics from Avril but if the best she can give us is bois lie love sux I’m gonna throw up a million times over then she should get someone to help her with lyrics. There’s lyrics being direct and raw then there’s lyrics being immature and samey. She’s the latter.

Avril can write good lyrics when she actually tries, for example Darlin, RW, Not Enough, Falling Fast, DTLM. The problem is usually it’s her upbeat songs where she doesn’t try to write good lyrics.

That's what I thought... but I've been in this fandom since 2002 and what you said it's okay for Let Go era. In Under my skin, she improved her songwriting because she worked with Chantal and Raine. "Her singing conveys emotions much better than most other singers" this is subjective, because this opinion goes from which singer you like over other artists. Everyone here expects to be better as we get older and with Avril, I think a lot of us thought that she'd getting better with the years: As a singer, songwriter, live musican and performer but... it did not happened and she stayed the same: her singing technique gone quite backwards, dodges high notes, uses too much pre recorded tracks, she stopped playing piano at her shows, her drumming skills are quite... poor, she justs "plays" her electric guitar in one song and stopped the acoustic moments where you can hear her true playing and true singing, her writting got so repetitive, monotonus and simply short for someone with 20 years of career. Sure she had some highlights but in general, she stayed quite simple and quite boring in her writing. What it feels mediocre here is trying to excuse her lack of motivation for improving as rawness in her songwriting and her performance overall.

I am not excusing anything because I don't think that Avril has to improve on anything. If you don't like what she does you can complain or stop following her. Of course, the rawness and real emotion of her seems to me superior to that of most singers in the most objective way possible, but obviously it is a matter of taste. The emotion that just Deja Vu and Avalanche transmit to me far exceeds Taylor's bland Midnights album, to give a recurring example here. If she started to sing complicated lyrics it wouldn't feel like her style and I probably wouldn't enjoy it as much.

Of course a new song leaks and is taken off the internet when I'm not online for a couple of days.

This is really random but, Spice girls wannabe really suits her style at the minute, get this 'I tell you what you want what you really really want so tell me what you want what you really really want... ticking time bomb I come on strong, i come in hard like a cannonball' 😆 it fits really well 👌
