I don't think that has at all to do with Love Sux. It's just 20 years later and 2000s nostalgia is finally in. Maybe it does work for fans since she's finally "Avril Lavigne" again. Doing music that most of her fans are into (rock/live instruments) and not a whole bunch of experimental music that she never seemed to really try to do well (imo). But I really doubt everyone is going her props for LS. It's LG they are giving her due for. !00% this. Love Sux did get some of the best music mag reviews of her career to be sure but as I've said previously it's because Avril aimed for the floor and she hit it. She wasn't shooting for the ceiling. In sports like diving or figure skating the scores are skewed based on how hard the moves you perform in your program are. You can do a flawless program but if all your moves are basic ones you're going to score less overall than someone who attempts harder ones. Love Sux is a very basic album and she did a great job with that but it's not nearly as uh, complicated or mature as albums she was making 20 years ago. It's so insubstantial (Avalanche and one or two other songs aside perhaps) that you can knock it over with a feather. My concern is the she had so much fun making it she's never going to try and stretch herself again creatively. 'Good enough' will become Avril's new 'good' and she is better than that as an artist. Or she used to be. I don’t know if I fully agree with this. In terms of keeping to a pop punk heartbreak theme, I think Love Sux shows some good lyrical progression from her earlier stuff. Listen to He Wasn’t and Break of a Heartache side by side. Same subject matter, and even though BOAH is shorter, she’s got a better control of rhyme scheme and satire. I’ve also seen her say in multiple interviews how the lyrics throughout the Love Sux album poke fun at her always writing about bad boyfriends.

I will reiterate the fact that the self titled album is pretty good and has aged well too.Its 9 years old now and I love how diverse it is.It is one of her best albums and the best of the 2010's decade in my opinion.I will never understand the hate for it,because it has bangers after bangers and only one bad song - Hello Kitty. The hate she got during the era for her marriage to Chad Kroeger and the Hello Kitty music video was unfair.Shane Dawson is the reason behind the Hello Kitty backlash. He started calling her a racist. She's not a racist nor is she a bad person. In retrospect,a lot of people now understand why and for who,she did Hello Kitty and the hate has died down a lot, thankfully.

I went back to it recently and while HTGNU and RNR hold up fine as parts of her singles collection, I still only felt like 17 was the only quality track. For me, the issue with AL5 is there were too many cooks in the kitchen and a lot of songs sounded like Avril Lavigne covering another singer who was trying to sound like Avril Lavigne. I do, however, love that this album seems to have brought on a new generation / cohort of fans.

Ooh I will agree with you there: her vocals were in their prime during this era.

Erase UMS, so Avril would of had an even bigger contrast and “WTF” reaction from the media from jumping LG to TBDT

I wouldn’t want to erase any album/era because they’re all part of her history. However, if I had to, I’d get rid of either the GL or AL era. GL took such a long time to come out and I wasn’t very satisfied with the songs when it finally did. The AL era had a lot of controversies (like the Hello Kitty thing). I noticed that non-fans seemed to make fun of her more back then.

I think the problem with AL5 was that it Had too many delays and her vision changed too much from the end product. GL Had a long wait but her vision comes across the album when you throw out two songs. AL5 is basically a two sided album. The darker one in 2012 and the lighter one in 2013.

Self-titled, but keep 17, Hello Heartache, Falling Fast, and Hish Hush.
