I do think it's hilarious that Avril supposedly would hear one of their songs on the radio and ask who it was. Can't she recognize her own (ex) husband's voice? :p exactly what i thought

Hayley from Paramore posted this tho So if you don't recognize your own voice? But Chad's voice isn't one of a kind... ------------------------ Back to topic: If you were 15-16 moving from Canada to New York to maybe become a successful singer. And growing up you were singing in curch and country songs, then you meet L.A Reid and his pop universe, but also meet up with a bunch of guys playing punk/rock/pop - who do you think would have a bigger influence on you? I would also have gone more rock/punk than listening to the "older" business men. And about the "hate you, hate hate hate" song she was proud of but the matrix didn't like, well "when i was 14 and a little more green.." is a good quote. I don’t think Avril knew exactly what she wanted, and had no idea if she did that or this, where she would end up.

I have a question. How many of you that listened to Avril on the radio, heard Nickelback tunes on the same station? In the early days of Avril's career, I often listened to the local rock station and don't remember ever hearing one of Avril's songs played. Nickelback didn't have the same kind of immediate success Avril did. By the time Nickelback broke into the top ten, Avril was working on her first album. Once Avril started to get some air play, I would think she would listen to stations that played her tunes. I didn't. So, I'm asking if the stations that played her material also played Nickelback. If not, or not much, I would think it possible she wasn't exposed to much of Nickelback's material. What do you think?

I can't imagine why. I would think that anyone that lives in a country with radio stations that play Avril and Nickelback, could answer.

Didn't Avril stay in America in the early phase of her career?

I think it would depend on the album. I don't think Nickelback's earlier stuff like HYRM was played on pop radio, but probably some of their later songs like Photograph, Far Away, essentially their poppier stuff, could have been. To my knowledge Avril was rarely if ever played on rock or alternative radio.

Nickelback was played on rock, pop and Hot AC radio, Avril was played on pop and Hot AC radio. So unless Avril was listening to urban or country radio all the time she must have heard at least some of their songs...

Here in austria they mix everything together. They actually play both on the same radio stations. Nickelback is extremely popular at our stations. I hear their stuff almost every few days. The only songs I hear from Avril, on a regular bases on the radio, are Complicated, NH and LMG. They play NH the most, which is kinda weird because it is the least "poppy" song of those three They even play some rock/metal and gangsta rap stuff

I don't have time to read the whole thread just now, but at a quick glance, I can say that sure if she'd made more rock albums she wouldn't've been a big pop star (the clue's in the title really...) but there are plenty of lesser known rock bands/artists who haven't had the huge publicity, but have been going steady for years selling loads of records and touring worldwide. Despite being a famous pop act, Avril hasn't been able to keep doing that.... Would she have managed if she had a darker/heavier sound? Who knows, I'd like to think so. I'd like to think she would've been this generations Joan Jett or whatever.

I kind of prefer to think that if Avril made dark rock albums for her whole career that she'd have been a solo version of Evanescence.
