In the end, all so called "rock" bands make pop music.
But in Avril's case, she went to the completely different direction - she started to make flop music.
And that's the problem.

More like the music people like / music people doesn't like.
What's the point of being pop when people don't like it?

The pop was made to be liked. Is easy to like the main audience with pop songs.

The thing is, Avril was intent on making a rock album at first and it was Arista that threatened to drop her if she did. She's trying to act in this interview as though she knew this all along but the truth is she actually didn't. I think she is just repeating words she heard the label execs say. If Arista didn't give a shit about what she did, you can bet she'd have made a rock album. I don't think she cared about having singles for pop radio until someone told her she'd probably flop right out of the business if she didn't.
I also think it's weird that she praises Clif Magness's work on LG and says she felt she could make any rock songs with him, yet didn't work with him on UMS, except IAGWIW and Take It, which ended up as B-sides.

But not Avril's pop. Which contradicts the purpose of her musical change.

I think she just wanted to prove herself as a songwriter by working with different people and got caught up working with other artists like Butch and Chantal rather than hired songwriters and with her band because it felt more authentic. She always said she loved Take It though, I guess it just didn't fit the album or maybe the label disliked it. I sort of wish she would work with him again because some of her songs with him were really interesting.

I agree. I actually love all her songs with Clif Magness: Losing Grip, Mobile, My World, Too Much To Ask, IAGWIW, and Take It. Unwanted is the only one I'm kind of eh about but it's still a decent song.

I do think it's hilarious that Avril supposedly would hear one of their songs on the radio and ask who it was. Can't she recognize her own (ex) husband's voice? exactly what i thoughtThere is probably a ton of music and artists that she doesn't know who it is.
