Hi! I didn't think this discussion meshed with any other threads, but I can move it if mods want I realized the other day how much I love All I Wanted, but when LS first came out it was my least favorite song on the album (well, I guess tied with KMLTWIE). But it's really grown on me. And Pity Party just came on and I found myself bouncing around in my seat to it without even realizing I was doing it. I never disliked it necessarily I guess, but taking it for what it is (short and repetitive of the rest of LS) it's kinda fun. On the flip side, I used to love Fly but now I'm kinda "meh" towards it. It still holds special meaning to me because the first time I heard it, I decided to work on my mental health cause it just kinda made me realize I at least owed it to myself to try to get better. But now I guess it's just like another Trademark Avril Power Ballad About Getting Through Hard Times™️. So I was wondering if anyone else has Avril songs that have grown or "shrunk" (lol) on them over the years?

I used to really like HDIF. Now I’d never ever choose to listen to it lol I find it so dull
I can’t really think of any that have grown on me, I tend to like it or hate it on first listen lol. I’m A Mess I think I wasn’t sure on to start with but it grew on me a bit.

hmm over the years my liking has passed to What The Hell and Smile. Now I just treat them as songs to please the label. But I began to appreciate Girlfriend more than before. I used to not like this song one bit or even annoy me.

I really disliked HTNGU when it came out, it was such a generic pop song to me and clearly forced to please the label. At the time fans were calling it one of her best songs ever and I was like 🤨 But then after a while it grew on me, it’s still a generic pop song and overly produced, but it’s a fun listen. Nowadays most of the fanbase despises it lol Oh how the turn tables…

I was too young to be a fan of Avril’s first two albums when they came out, but I listened to all the ones that came after Under My Skin as soon as they were released. Every time I thought, “I’m not going to enjoy any of these songs” when I first listened, but then I ended up playing the album on repeat for the whole year.
When I first heard the Let Go B-sides in 2005, I found them absolutely boring and I used to hate them. But then, four years later, in late 2009, I fell in love with every single B-side and became obsessed with them. Nowadays, I still love them -and I always will. Also, I have phases with some songs. For example, the first time I heard How Does It Feel was in 2004 or 2005 and I loved it right away of course, but then, in 2013, during the AL era ( !), I started listening to this song over and over for weeks. The same thing happened with Nobody’s Fool, which I only fell for it in 2009, listening several times a day.
Now, in 2023, I’m listening to Tomorrow and Slipped Away more than ever, repeatedly. Of course, I’ve been loving these songs for decades, but not with this intensity. The same happened to various other songs, like Remember When, from Goodbye Lullaby. I only fell for it in 2022. I think it’s a psychological thing, I don’t know…
Switching the topic now… From the few songs I really liked from the first time I listened, several are not favorites among fans. From Let Go and Under My Skin, I think there are not many songs people dislike, but the ones I loved instantly are Sk8er Boi, the first song that introduced me to Avril, and Complicated. From Under My Skin, Don’t Tell Me, My Happy Ending, Nobody’s Home, How Does It Feel, Slipped Away and Freak Out - the first time I listened to this song I literally freaked out… it was a live performance in Dublin , I think, and after the first chorus I started jumping alone in my room lol. From TBDT, the title song. I loved it instantly. From GL, none. From AL, only GYWYL. From HAW, Bigger Wow. From LS, Deja Vu and All I Wanted. Who knows? Maybe in 2025 I’ll become obsessed with Hello Kitty?

I used to not like this song one bit or even annoy me. OMG literally same! I'm not a fan of WTH and Smile because they just so don't go with the GL theme. I can appreciate them for what they are, but I'm just not fond of them. And I used to not care about Girlfriend -in general I'm not the biggest fan of her singles because I always love the album tracks more- but in the past few months Girlfriend has grown on me and I'm enjoying it more.

I think Girlfriend has grown on me since I really like that one but at the time. Sk8er Boi really has shrunk. I loved it back then but I really can't hear that one anymore.

I'd say "I'm With You" has definitely grown on me. I used to find it kinda of boring tbh, and it's still far from one of my favourites. But I certainly started appreciating it more after experiencing it live in 2011, and in recent years, I simply found myself enjoying it more than I used to as a kid. "Mobile" has also definitely grown on me during the past few years. I used to consider it a filler, but then I started learning it on guitar; that rhythm is just so good! It's surely one of my favourites off LG now.

I've always thought that HTNGU, RNR, Smile, WTH and even WYWH were songs to please the labels and radios. But now, I see them as Avril favorites post "TBDT" with any doubt. She even said a few times that she loves to perform these tracks on stage. If you consider that she has full autority over her setlist choices, I don't think that she was so unhappy about them as lead singles, especially years after their release.
"Remember When" is the song that has most grown on me over the years. When GL came out, I used to think that this was just a silly song about one of her many breakups. Too mellow for me at the time. Now I see "Remember When" as the epitome of her first divorce. I think it is her most vulnerable song along with "Head Above Water" and the unbeatable "I'm With You".
"Not Enough" and "Remember When" are the best on GL for me. I'd include "4 Real" on my GL top 3. I know it has weak lyrics and production but this track has one of her most raw and honest vocals ever.

Another turning point for me was "Unwanted". It was my least favorite song on "Let Go" for years. After watching and listening to her remarkable performances of this song at Bonez Tour 2005, I fell in love with this track immediately. Too bad she didn't bring "Unwanted" back for the 20th anniversary of "Let Go" on Love Sux Tour.
I still remember when she commented about the idea of "Let Go" 20th anniversary concerts last year. The last summer was a perfect moment to do it but she preferred MGK and that whole 30 minute "singles" set.

I feel like he was a little more controlling then we think

The whole excitment makes us blind lol ...specially when she adds some nostalgia to it. To me, this song follows the structure of "Complicated" in some ways and the music video made it even more obvious. I don't like the amount of "autotune" used on the studio version too. Whenever she tries to recreate something from her prime years, she fails hard, in my opinion. First of all, she has a 100% different persona now. Everything sounds cute and childish on her "new" self. I know she was super young when she has huge but she sounded way more mature in therms of performance, message and posture.

She seemed happier on it than at her own solo world tour concerts last years. It was definetely her choice.

Oh yeah, I was definitely blinded by the excitement of a new era, the nostalgia factor, and simply Avril herself, lol. I was in my absolute fangirl phase; she couldn't make a bad song (except for HK, lol).
I've calmed down a lot since, and I'm now in the majority of those who really don't like HTNGU. So generic, repetitive, too much autotune. The production just isn't good imo. Funny how these things change...
