From Nate's recent Billboard interview: B: Though it’s not an official single, last week you released your duet with Avril Lavigne, “Can You Die From a Broken Heart.”N: We just filmed the music video for it in Toronto and it was really fun. I actually got to be a zombie. I’ve got in white contacts, and I got to freak everybody out. It’s really emotional. It was my highest- budget video we’ve ever been a part of. It was probably six figures to do it.B: You’ve called the track the saddest song you’ve ever been a part of.N: I’ve been in that place before during the heartbreak [when] it feels like nothing’s gonna fix it, nothing can make you feel better, nothing can take you out of that mindset. I remember feeling so desperate. That song is so desperate. It’s like begging to have that person back, I think the song could be life changing. It feels like “I’m With You” that was my favorite one of Avril’s, like a nod to that. Not an official single but they filmed, a high budget, video for it? I guess it wasn't an official single at the time it was released, it surely will be in the upcoming days. He basically released his album with no active single on Country radio. Bulletproof peaked in May and since then he had a promo single out. CYDFABH is not receiving any airplay but it just missed the adds date for Country. EDIT Oops, forgot the source. This is key I was expecting and even tho i think this is probably AI... The song would suit her tone so much:
If they ever sing it live i hope it sounds something like this.

So I just finished listening to Nate Smith's new album and OH MY GOD. i was pleasently surprised on how much i loved it. Some songs scream old Taylor Swift so freaking much that it's concerning LOL especially "Want Me Back" in the verses where he goes "Too late at thе bar, lead foot on the gas
Go a little too far, too hard, too fast" and then the whole chorus, especially this part: "All the wild-child whiskey nights, single and free" AND THEN AGAIN on the bridge. It's a very TS coded song, i love it.
This whole album is poppier than you would think, or maybe i never realised this is what "country pop-rock" sounds like bc of how i indentified this genre with just Taylor Swift, despite listening to some other country pop-rock artists BUT anyways.
The album is great, seriously.
The thing is that i think "Can You Die from a broken Heart" is actually one of the weakest tracks on the album. Like....seriously, i think any other song on this album would have made a better collaboration woth Avril, and they chose the 2 songs that just don't suit her that much. Not even close to the epicness of Im With You. So here's a list of the songs on the album that I loved and think woud have fitted Avril way better:
- Fix What You Didn't Break - Want Me Back - Perfect - Carry You Home - Goodbye Again - Not of This Earth - Faith - Give It All - California Gold
Some other influences i can hear is from OneRepublic, but overall it's not that old country sound that sounds a bit funny to non americans LOL. it's a great album honestly and if Avril goes into this direction i would be VERY happy. Some lyrics about drinks, being in the bar, and girls are quite cringy but apart from that it's an amazing album. Listen to it pls! haha

And ater so many listens of Can You Die from a Broken Heart i just think they either rushed the collab or didn't care that much about it because of some very obvious mistakes and weird choices, these 3 in particular:
- When they sing the bride and they go "....can you die from a broken heart" Avril cuts the sentence shorter than Nate and it pisses me off A LOT. and then...on the second "whoah whoaaaah....." is Nate who cuts the phrase shorter. And you can hear only one of them finishing the part, AND it's obviosu it's not a stylistinc choice or anything...because it just sounds bad. Like when you sing with someone who knows the song and don't know where to cut the note...lol.
- The last phrase on the album "tell me can you die from a broken heart" avril sings just "....from a broken heart" it's not technically a mistake but it sounds....wrong. LOL
- Avril's way too high pitched parts. Usually in a male-female collab the guy sings a bit higher so it matches the female voice. Option 2 would be for the guy to sing very very low so that if the female has to sing one octave higher it doesn't sound squeaky and annoying to the ears, a good example would be Exile by Taylor and Bon Iver. My point is that they didn't match the key of the song so it fits both of them, it just fits Nate. Avril's delivery is quite unnatural, exagerated and out of her comfort zone. They could have solved this either by getting them both closer on the pitch or having Avril sing lower. A good example of her ability and a good match is I'm a Mess, where she sings quite low the whole song and just goes higher on the climax of the song. Out of her comfort zone too but the song was structured that way, having a build up in pitch, as well as Yungblud singing quite high for a male voice and adjusting his tone to hers. They really did a great job in that one, where here... it just comes off as weird...i listen to it and can't help feeling the struggle on her parts. She sounds a bit nasal as well and too autotuned. The harmonies are beautiful and everything but even those i think they don't compliment the song's vibe. They sound good but it's quite obvious they were not needed, and it makes the second chorus sound very different from the first one, as if it was a cover on The Vocie, or any other singing contest where they put harmonies everywhere just because.
With this being said, i do like the song, the melody is great, most of the lyrics as well, the vibe in general. I still think the song would be better as a Nate solo. Or if they arranged Avril's part better.
It's not hate, i just pointed out some things that make the song not achieve its full potential. It's just my personal opinion hehe.

Both 'Bulletproof' and 'CYDFABH' weren’t written by Nate. 'Fix What You Didn’t Break' was, but it was just a promo single with no video and was only released to Country radio. 'I Like It' is a collaboration with Alesso and is included on the album as the last track as a bonus.
It makes you wonder if Nate had to record these songs because they weren’t written by him. Maybe the label required them, and in return, he was allowed to include some of his self-written songs on the album. So Avril was allowed to be featured only on the potential singles and not on her self-written album tracks.

I love those little "imperfections". Makes the song perfect to me. I don't want this perfection anymore that we have everywhere today. Its boring.

I agree it's a good album, very pop. I don't see the Taylor influences though, mostly because I think that's just country writing, not really specific to her. If you heard his earlier stuff, he was way more chill acoustic kind of guy so I like that he's gotten a bit more of an edge. Although, funny you mentioned One Republic because like them he's kind of basic. California Gold is well made album, HAW take notes, but it's long and it gets boring midway. He's got potential though if he leans into his rockier side. As for Avril and Nate's future, I hope they remain friends. I wouldn't mind them working together again but he's not the person she should take notes from IMO. They're both missing a touch of something.

yeaah, it's probably just how country pop sounds like i guess haha. But Want Me Back has some very The Story of Us vibes, maybe that's why it reminds me of Taylor xD For me i listened half of the album yesterday and rest of it today so it was not boring for me at all. But i can imagine listening to it start to finish can be a bit overwhelming, especially having a few skips here and there.
I do like this direction and sound for Avril tho. It would be at least something a bit different since her jazzy attempts on HAW. Hoping for the best from her. LS was a step into the right direction at the time, especially for her "return" and legacy. The quality was great, some lyrics could be improved, but it's time for the next step. And another LS just won't do it...

fix what you didn’t break and can you die from a broken heart are giving very much “copy Maddie and Tae’s song title homework but change a few words so it’s not obvious” lol
Listened to quite a bit of the album. It’s ok but it’s not really country is it lol. Avril sounds good on CYDFABH but she sounds fantastic on actual country songs (see the shania performance). If she’s going down that route, which I’m not sure she is, Nate’s style of country isn’t the style she should be going for because it’s so far removed from the country she sounds best on

I think it's maybe a way of testing the waters. He's officially country but some of these songs have a feel more like her usual sound

I kinda like his album, I still have to listen to five more songs but indeed, the feature with Avril sounds a bit like the weakest track on the album.

Spotify invited me to Nate's online listening party. I get to hear back stories of the songs and ask questions, maybe talk to him too which makes me really shy 😅. I'm thinking of asking about Avril's vocals but idk how to word my question. I don't want to ask the typical questions. If you got any Qs let me know. I usually miss these but I'll try to catch this one. Check your email if you have Spotify premium and want to join.

He talks a bit about Avril here and there. Nothing new or crazy. Just how they pitched the song for him and immediately thought of Avril and his team contacted hers and she said yes.
They also agreed on that she "very present", aware of everything is going on around her, good memory and very creative. That's very interesting and a bit contradictory on what she shows in interviews or in public, and it could make sense. She is shy after all, which could explain how everyone that hang out with her praises her but then sometimes she comes out as "lost" or awkward in public events.
Honestly i interpret that as that she's just real...she's not performing a fake persona or a celebrity. I always loved this about her: she's just down to earth.

Didn't he also say the same thing about Bulletproof? That he thought of her. Nate Smith superfan confirmed.
