The Bandaids Archive ProjectThe old site is gone. Some of its memories live on through web archives, but most is lost. Now that we are starting fresh with this site, we can start preserving it now so that our beloved Bandaids memories will live on and so we won't lose everything* all over again. There is a site called the Internet Archive: Wayback Machine that allows anyone to archive an active, public webpage. archive.org/web/If we work together, we can collectively keep a lot of this stuff saved for keepsake. Archiving a single page only takes less than a minute and it's easy.No one is required to archive any webpages of this site, but any help is appreciated. This project will remain open for anyone to contribute. This will be a community effort. We'll be using this spreadsheet for recording our archives and for organization.RULES • Use the Wayback Machine to archive: archive.org/web/• When archving threads, archive each page indiviudally using their own url • Only archive a page without a full amount of posts if the last post was made over 2 months ago • If you archive, even just 1 page, add your name to the contributors list • After adding your name to the list, choose your own color for your name • Only use your color for checkmarks and listing the latest update for a page above 4Each Tab across the bottom is home to each board on Bandaids• Direct to a tab of the board in which you will be archiving • After a page is archived, add a checkmark in place of the box, using your color When a new thread is created on BA, the thread needs added in the appropriate tab• Put the thread's name in the next available cell • Copy the box in each cell for how many pages the thread has (Only) When a thread has more than 4 pages• Only the first 4 pages get their own separate cell for checking off as completed • Put the total amount of pages in the 'total pages' cell (only if more than 4 pages) • When a page above 4 is archived, list it in the cell and also put the date, using your color (The purpose of this is to inform everyone else which page above 4 still need archived) For Threads & Pages that need continually updated• (For Pages) Put the date of when the page is last updated • The list of boards is for listing the date of when the thread list of that board or page is last updated |
DO's Please use this format for dating: Nov.15 • Abbreviate the month, add a period, and add the day's number • Do not use any spaces, this causes the date to change to numbers [This causes a problem because dates such as 11/4/15 could mean Nov.4 or April.11] | DONT's • Do not delete or remove anything [Only boxes should be replaced with checkmarks] • Do not overwrite someone else's data [Only pages above 4 or pages that need updated continually should be overwritten with new data] |
Examples, Tips, & More Additional Info included in the spoiler. How Do I Archive A Webpage?• Go here, archive.org/web/, and there will be a feature on the bottom right that says "Save Page Now":
• Paste a full url into the box and then click "Save Page"
• Wait for the page to load and for a message to appear saying that the page has been saved |
Can Any Webpage Be Archived?• Not any webpage can be archived, to be eligible a webpage must be a live working/active page (For instance, this webpage: kjfjfkh.com/fjejr does not exist therefore it isn't active and can't be archived)
• A webpage must also be public (This means that not everything on BA can be archived). Only pages that can be viewed by a guest can be archived.
• The following can't be archived: - PMs - Member Profiles set to 'only members can view' - Any sub-forums that can only be accessed by members
• If you want to check if a webpage is eligible to be archived, I suggest that you go to that page in a private browser window in which you won't be logged into your account. - If the webpage appears fine, then it can be archived. - If the webpage shows the message "Oops, there was an error! You must login or register to view this page." then it can technically be archived, but it will only archive that message, so it isn't worth archiving. |
How Do I Know If A Page Has Been Archived Already?• Go here, archive.org/web/, and at the top will be a search bar, enter the url and click "Browse History"
• One of two things will happen: - If the page has been archived before, a calendar will show all the dates on which the page has been archived - If the page hasn't been archived, a prompt will tell you the page hasn't been archived and will ask if you to archive it |
ExamplesSave/Archive an active, public page
Enter the full url and click 'Save Page'
You will get a prompt saying the page is saving
You will then get a prompt saying it saved
If you click on the X on the prompt, then you can view the archived webpage
| Save/Archive an inactive page
Enter the full url and click 'Save Page'
You will get a prompt saying the page is not live/active and cannot be archived
You can then click on the link to search all archived pages under that domain. Depending on the site, you may or may not find archived pages under that domain. | Search/Browse an archived page
Enter the full url into the search bar and click 'Browse History'
A calendar will appear, showing all the dates that the page has been archived
Click on a date to view an archived version of the page
Use the arrow buttons at the top to move forward and backward in time through archives of the same page
| Search/Browse an unarchived page
You will be told that the page hasn't been archived, but that it is live and can be archived. Click on 'save this url in the Wayback Machine'
You will then get a prompt saying that the page is being saved, and then a prompt saying that the page has been successfully saved
Save/Archive an active, private page
The page will either archive with the message "Oops, there was an error! You must login or register to view this page." or a prompt will say that the page cannot be archived due to the robot.txt. prohibits it. |
* QUICK NOTE* *When archiving threads, each page of the thread must be archived separately with its own url QUESTIONS?Post them below!

Personally I think it'd be a great idea to organize a team for this and maybe assign each member of the "team" what to archive. I know it says you can check to see what has already been archived but I think having a "team" and assigning what to archive to each member would make it easier and prevent any duplicates. And this way we'll know how many people are interested in participating and how the progress is going. Sort of like how we had the media team doing the gallery on the old site. An archiving team would be great. We could organize a spreadsheet of all the threads on this forum and check it off as they get archived.

I got the original idea and this thread approved already, so it just depends on what the staff think about this team idea. Some of the bigger, more important threads and pages would need to be archived more than once because the first post or content would be updated/changed from whenever it was last archived. And threads would need any new additional pages archived as time goes on.

When searching search lavignebandaids.com instead of avrilbandaids because that's what it used to be.

I made a spreadsheet for us to use. I'll outline the details and directions for archiving that we'll use for the spreadsheet later after I get off work. I haven't forgotten about this project.

I've updated the OP with new info. It contains the rules, some DOs and DON'Ts, and the link to the spreadsheet we will be using for record keeping.
We will use this thread for communication among contributing members.

The whole thing... i understand the url saving each page. But after that. I'll outline everything to make it easier. I hope this helps. If you still have misunderstandings or questions, just ask. • Use the Wayback Machine to archive: archive.org/web/Open the spoiler in the OP for Examples, Tips, & More Additional Info concerning how to archive. • When archving threads, archive each page indiviudally using their own urlEach page of a thread has its own unique url; therefore, must be archived individually and separately from all other pages of the same thread. • Only archive a page without a full amount of posts if the last post was made over 2 months agoOkay, so when archiving a current thread that has multiple pages, not all pages have a full amount of posts; only preceding pages have a full amount of posts. Each page of a thread can only have a maximum of 15 posts. When a post is created in that thread afterwards, a new page will start. When a thread is currently active and getting new posts daily or weekly, then the last page of that thread will likely have new posts shortly after it has been archived; so archiving a page that doesn't have a full amount of 15 posts, archiving that partly-full page will be counterproductive because it will need archived again later in order to archive the new posts. So when archiving an active thread, only archive full pages (pages with 15 posts), and wait for the last page of the thread to fill up to 15 posts before you archive it. If archiving an old, non-active thread (a thread that was last posted in at least 2 months ago), archive the last page (which will most likely have less than 15 posts) if the very last post was created at least 2 months ago. We'll use the 'Avril Live Vs. Studio Preference' thread as an example. Page 1 + 2 both have pages succeeding them so they both have 15 posts. They can be archived. Page 3 has less than 15 posts. This thread is active and will have new posts soon. Don't archive this page until it reaches 15 posts or until 2 months have passed after the last post was created. • If you archive, even just 1 page, add your name to the contributors listAdd your username/display-name in this list • After adding your name to the list, choose your own color for your nameHighlight your name in the contributors list and choose a color Your name will now be that color • Only use your color for checkmarks and listing the latest update for a page above 4You will use the same color as your username to color code the checkmarks you place for the pages that you archive You will also use your name color for dating archives if a page's number is above 4 or if a page needs archived continuously. *Notice how that thread has more than 4 pages, so the total number of pages is recorded in the appropriate cell. Also notice how the last page is 6, but the last page archived was 5, so this tells everyone else that the last page is unarchived. • Each Tab across the bottom is home to each board on BandaidsBasically, each tab across the bottom shows an abbreviation of each board on Bandaids. Each tab will house the thread archiving list for the board on BA with the same name. For example, the BS Lounge tab will list the threads in the Black Star Lounge board on BA, and the AV Articles tab will list the threads in the Avril Lavigne Articles board on BA. • Direct to a tab of the board in which you will be archivingSelf-explanatory. If you are archiving a thread in the General Discussion board on BA, then go to the 'Gen. Disc.' tab in the spreadsheet, and the thread you are archiving will be found in that tab's spreadsheet. • After a page is archived, add a checkmark in place of the box, using your color When a new thread is created on BA, the thread needs added in the appropriate tabSince the creation of the spreadsheet, two new thread have been created in the SOTW board on BA. So I go to the SOTW tab in the spreadsheet, scroll down to find the next available spot • Put the thread's name in the next available cellCopy the thread's name from BA (copying the exact name will be best), and paste it in the next cell in the list on the spreadsheet • Copy the box in each cell for how many pages the thread hasPut the little box in the places to represent how many pages the new thread has and will need archived. (Only) When a thread has more than 4 pages• Only the first 4 pages get their own separate cell for checking off as completedOnly providing a space for boxes for the first 4 pages will keep the spreadsheets concise, condensed, and easily seen while viewing your browser window in fullscreen. • Put the total amount of pages in the 'total pages' cell (only if more than 4 pages)Type the total number of pages a thread has (only if more than 4) in the correct cell • When a page above 4 is archived, list it in the cell and also put the date, using your color (The purpose of this is to inform everyone else which page above 4 still need archived)Type the number of the page you last archived (if you archived a page number above 4) in the correct cell and add the date while using your contributor/username color For Threads & Pages that need continually updatedThreads such as the Bandaids Dictionary, Forum Rules, and SOTW Standings change the content in their OPs occasionally, so the first page in these threads need archived more than once whenever the content of the OP is changed. Pages such as the Home page (which displays the latest BA Blog), the Forum Home page (which displays the board list and the latest post in each board), and the thread lists for each board change all the time and need archived more than once. The Home page needs archived when a new blog is posted and the Forum Home can be archived whenever anyone thinks about. It's not crucial for the Forum Home page everyday, but should be archived every now and then. The thread lists of each board on BA should be archived when a lot of new threads fill up the front page of the thread list. Home Page | Forum Home Page | Thread List for Avril Lavigne Media Board | | | |
• (For Pages) Put the date of when the page is last updated• The list of boards to the left is for listing the date of when the thread list of that board or page is last updatedThere is a list on the left of the Contributors/Rules tab in the spreadsheet. This is a list of all the Board thread lists, home page, forum home page, and other pages that need archived frequently. Whenever these are archived, put/change the date in the correct cell and change the date color to your contributor/username color

But when a thread is active, you only archive a fully 15 post page. So in the total field you put 1&2 - when you only have posted 1 page and the 2 needs to be saved??
