I did not listen to it a long time ago and I will not do it. I don't like religious songs at all.

We've known about this song for several years.
Personally I think it's great. So what if it's religious or unlike her normal music? Listen to that voice! Plus it's nice to hear music from her before she became famous and to hear what she sounded like back then. I don't listen to it often but it's a really nice song from her.

I guess this is how it was going to sound like, if she did a christmas album.
Not my type of music.

I agree, don't care about the theme but I do like studying her early stuff.....her vocals are so mature sounding considering she was, like, 14? Goes to show she had a feel and precocious grip on melody.

Do people really not like it solely because it's a Christian song?

Do people really not like it solely because it's a Christian song? Probably. It honestly sounds so similar to a lot of the songs on GL, like just because it has a semi-religious theme (and honestly it's hardly a Jesus Loves Me type song, she mentions the word God a couple times and hallelujah, hardly what I would call a bible thumping song), people decide they don't like it. I've actually no joke seen quite a few people who are atheists say they're Carrie Underwood fans and can appreciate songs like Jesus Take the Wheel and Something In the Water. You don't have to be religious to appreciate a faith based song. In fact you could say a lot of Av's songs have a faith based undertone to them like Keep Holding On, Won't Let You Go, I'm With You, Tomorrow, Move Your Little Self On, Who Knows, Innocence, and Everybody Hurts. You don't necessarily need to namecheck God, Jesus, etc. for faith to be a theme in music and some of those songs I mentioned are fan favorite tracks. Just not liking the song in general is fair enough, but not liking it plainly because it's religious is IMO close minded. Regardless of the theme I think it's a great track because it showcases her voice so well.

I personally don't have any problem with those lyrics. And Avril's voice is really great, I can hardly believe she was only ... 14? 15? How old was she when this was recorded? Anyway, I still don't like the song, simply because of its genre. I don't like this kind of music at all, it's way too boring. And I don't think it sounds like a song that could've been on GL, it's too soul or jazz or whatever this is (sorry, I'm not good at determining music genres). GL's songs are some kind of acoustic- and piano-laden pop. At least that's what I think.

As an atheist, I tend to not like religious and faith-related topics in songs too much, but I can appreciate the music and even the voice, and that's the case with the OP song; not amongst my favourites by any means, though. I don't find those songs you mentioned too religious or related to faith, perhaps "spiritual" in some cases, mainly empowering. Actually IWY is my favourite song from Avril and I've never seen it as faith-related song

I am not that religious but I'm definitely no atheist, yet I still listen to and love a lot of music that's considered totally atheistic. The only reason why I don't listen to religious songs is because all that I know have that same kind of genre which I simply don't like. The only exception is this "Hallelujah" by Leonard Cohen, that's a really nice song.

Do people really not like it solely because it's a Christian song? There are better gospel songs. I just find this song incredibly boring.

GL's songs are some kind of acoustic- and piano-laden pop. At least that's what I think. Maybe it's not exactly like GL but it's sort of stripped down, acoustic, raw, emotional, mature lyrics. And yes she was 14 when she recorded this, amazing tone and amazing ability for such a young and untrained singer. Actually IWY is my favourite song from Avril and I've never seen it as faith-related song Well that's kind of what I meant is that a lot of those songs are "spiritual," like to keep going in life and stuff like that. I know that Avril wrote IWY about a guy but I feel like the lyrics are vague enough to mean she (or someone else) can't "see" God but she believes/has faith "I don't know who you are but I'm with you." Lyrics can mean different things to different people, I've even heard someone before suggest Anything But Ordinary is about the creation of the world "This world is a beautiful accident." Also the chorus of WLYG to me could potentially be interpreted as God/Jesus saying those things to people in times of despair, there's actually a drawing out there of Jesus grabbing someone's wrist as they're about to fall "When you're feeling sad don't forget you can reach for my hand, I won't let you go." I'm not saying that Avril DID write any of those songs with those messages, just that I could see some people interpreting them that way. Again, lyrics can mean different things to different people. A lot of people for example view HK about lesbian sex and Darlin as a coming out song.

Do people really not like it solely because it's a Christian song? Untrue. I just find it a very boring song which doesn't cater to my personal tastes at all. On the other hand, I've never heard a faith-based song that I can honestly say I liked, but that's just a coincidence. Though if so many songs are so open to interpretation, maybe I DO like a lot of faith-based songs without being aware of it.
