If you watch YouTube videos (like lots of people) you'll have no doubt come across the channel "The Fine Brothers" It's a very popular channel that I myself used to watch- and basically has people reacting to viral videos. A few days ago they announced a new service they're offering (if you could call it that) Called React World. What it is is that if you post a reaction video, say of your Parents opening a gift you gave them. They can take that down legally. The only way it won't be at risk of it being taken down is if you sign with them so that they get a cut of the video revenue. There's been a huge backlash especially on Reddit, YouTube and even Facebook- but they're deleting comments. Nobody should be able to copyright something so generic and this is just plain wrong- the Subscribers got them to where they are today and now they want to make money off their own videos? Peronally I've unsubscribed from their channel.

What? Why! That shouldn't be allowed.

What? Why! That shouldn't be allowed. It has around a month to be opposed by people- but you can only submit a claim if you have proof you'll be affected by the trademark.

To be honest I watch a lot of YouTube videos and have never come across this channel. Their idea seems pretty selfish, greedy, and downright stupid and ridiculous. Isn't there some channel that features a lot of videos of young kids reacting to something? (They did one video of kids reacting to Avril's Hello Kitty video, for example). Surely they are one of the channels that would be affected? There are many many YouTubers who do "reaction" videos, for example Chyaz (former BA member you might know of) did a video not too long ago where she "reacted" to old photos of herself on social media and several years ago she posted a video of her "reaction" to the new UK prime minister election. I'm certain there's others out there that post reaction videos to all kinds of things like elections, talent competition results, stories on the news, sports events (like Super Bowl reactions), fashion trends, anything really. There's no way someone can copyright something like that. I hope they don't succeed.

This is extremely revolting and above all STUPID. I did not suscribe to their channel but I used to watch their videos once in a while. They have plenty of suscribers though (at the moment...) but they are not that famous.. and as Bogo said, a lot of people have already done "react videos", it would just be impossible for them to have the monopoly over it.. at least I hope so.

They've made a video to explain further but it hasn't answered anything. It's only copyright infringement if you copy "Their Format" but the format is literally sitting in front of a computer and asking them about their reactions. They even said if you make a video called "Kids react to Christmas presents" that wouldn't be allowed as "Kids react" is a copyrighted name https://www.reddit.com/r/videos/comments/43igca/update/

:smh:
I agree that this idea shouldn't be able to be copyrighted, especially by them. Do they have proof that they were the first to post a video of this sort? I highly doubt so.

Basically they want to license "their" format to other people around the world so that they can make legitimate fine brothers react videos? This seems like a bad idea, both in theory and practice. Allowing other people to make these react videos in with the fine brothers' ~brand attached would decrease the integrity of what they have already established on their own by making the videos themselves. No one except them and their team will be able to produce react videos in the same way as them, so there will mass amounts of videos of reactions holding the fine brothers ~branded title and logos, but yet will be different and will not create the same experience as watching one of the fine brothers' own videos.
And to build from that point, since these reaction videos will be different, due to the fact that it won't be the fine brothers and heir team making the videos, aren't these videos essentially the same as they would be without a license from the fine brothers? This is an absurd idea they have conjured. They want people who make reaction videos to begin licensing their ~brand so that they can earn a cut of potential monetization. Money going into their pockets is the only difference I am seeing that we be created. Because any plain reaction video will be nothing like a fine brothers' reaction video and therefore shouldn't wear the fine brothers' ~brand name. The videos cannot be produced the same (i.e. the lighting, camera quality, editing).
Their premise is stupid. "We want to let people around the world make reaction videos with out license". Um… people could already and were already doing this before you allowed them to lease your license!

It look's like they have decided to cancel their plans!
That's definitely good news, both for us and them. They were losing 100,000+ subscribers a day on average, losing ten subscribers a second at the height of their decline. I don't think they will ever recover from this. They've crashed; now they have to feel the burn.

Yes, definitely good news. Here is their official statement:
Is it just me, or are they completely missing the point? It sounds like they are retracting their plans based upon that 'people just don't understand their intentions'. Not the point, lol.

It's hard to see what's going on around you when your head is stuck up your own ass. But they're doing what any smart businessmen would do by pulling out of a terrible decision before the situation is completely irreparable. They still have over 13 million subscribers which is nothing to scoff at. It's pretty baffling that they thought it was a good idea in the first place, but hey ho.

It sounds to me like they only dropped it because of the backlash and lost subscribers, not because they realize it was a stupid and greedy idea. You know, like those criminals who only say sorry because they were caught, not sorry for what they did. Well I guess it doesn't matter what made them drop it, the good thing is that they did.
