I guess this can be a general computer discussion thread? There was a "sale" (pricing error) recently where a GTX 970 was only $35! Too bad it very quickly went out of stock. Damn, I could have enjoyed the gloriousness of ultra settings 60 fps.

Haha there's a thread on Reddit about it: https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/comments/49ok1q/gtx_970_for_35_pricing_error/ It seems no one who ordered actually got their 970 though, they were just refunded their $35.

My two PC's are just normal ordinary computers (pretty old ones), and definitely not gaming machines. Also I have a laptop (HP's), again - normal laptop from 2011 year. Plus I have an old as hell iMac g5 from 2004 year. (bought it to have access to the ppc architecture). Plus I have some arm and mips mini-PC's. They're developer boards and are kind of a hybrid between smartphones and PC's - they have performance numbers like smartphones (and tablet), but they act mostly as PC, since keyboard mouse and monitor are needed to work with them most comfortable (or, you might restrict yourself to only a serial conection via UART, connecting the board to PC, serving here as a terminal, but this is ugly and is for extreme developer experience). Often, these boards use the very same SoC's as in the smartphones or tablets released some years before xD. But mostly they use not pricy SoC's from "big" vendors like Qualcomm or Samsung, rather they use their much cheaper counterparts from China, and I mean of course Allwinner, Amlogic, Rockchip SoC's. Or maybe you heard about Raspberry Pi? Then this is it. Well, from that range of computers now I have BeagleBoneBlack rev C - its parameters: (SoC - TI Sitara AM3358 1GHz, armv7, Cortex-A8, single core, ram - 1GB DDR3; 4GB eMMC, microSD slot, 10/100Mbit Ethernet, 1x USB2 host, 1x USB2 OTG, microHDMI, bunch of other protocols through 2 extension headers, 1x dedicated UART header). Then I have Cubieboard 2 (SoC - Allwinner A20 1GHz, dual core, armv7, Cortex-A7, ram - 1 GB ddr3, 4GB onboard NAND flash (or 8, I forgot xD), microSD slot, SATA 2 port for 2.5" hdd, and also rich set of other connection protocols through two expansion headers), then I have a chinese Noname OTT box, well, its model is CSA90, but vendor is a mystery , this is a solid armv8 single board computer (SBC), or mini-PC, but as a consumer device it serves (and sells) as an android (v5.1) video player, meant to connect with your TV. it has Rockchip RK3368 SoC (1.4GHz, octa core, armv8 (thus - 64-bit arm!), Cortex-A53), 1GB ddr3 ram, again - 4 or 8 GB NAND flash, USB, HDMI, micro SD, IR, rgb LED, 100Mbit Ethernet, oh, WiFi and Blutooth. And also I have a mips machine ^^ this is the same mini-PC, but it has a MIPS CPU instead of ARM one, and this is rare thing and very desirable for me. It calls MIPS Creator CI20 by Imagination, it has Ingenic SoC JZ4780, 1.2GHz, dual core, mips32r2, 1GB ddr3 ram, 8GB NAND flash, SD slot, 10/100Mbit Ethernet, UART, JTAG headers, 2x expansion headers, rgb LED, WiFi and blutooth etc, and is given to me for free by one very good guy from Imagination. I wanted to buy it, but it was impossible since company didn't establish shipment to my country because of russian agression war conflict on the East of my country (where I live by the way). And so, the guy from that company, just sent me the board for free. This was so gentle and I still feel very moved by this. What I do on these boards? I learn them, and I am going to program them. I don't want to hurry up with this and proclaim my napoleon plans, it's not very mature, I just say - I program them, at the low level. You know, - firmwares, bootloaders, OS. Well, you asked. xD

I have a Mid-2014 15" Retina MacBook Pro that I received for school.I let my family use my old 2012 13" MacBook Pro since I use my school MacBook for both school and personal use. I used to have an Acer desktop running Windows Vista back in the day, (and a Dell desktop running XP before that), but over time it became so slow that with every use I wanted to rip my hair out. Finally I got fed up with the agony and made the switch to Mac in 2012. I've been a OS X user ever since. I don't bash Windows nor think that either OS is superior to another, I just personally love the UI and experience of OS X and it perfectly suits my needs. I grew up with Windows at home and grade school, but it was the hardware that made me switch. Plus I knew that having a Mac would coexist with my iPhone and iPad seamlessly. It's cool that some of you have custom-built PCs. I'm more of a pre-built computer user. I used to have an ACER computer that slowed down and eventually broke like yours. The motherboard went eventually. When I rigged up the hard drive of that computer to my new one I just went through every tutorial I could find on the internet about, "how to speed up my computer using Windows Vista". Eventually I got it working properly again and at a decent speed. There was something fundementally not right with Vista from the start that made it a bit shit. I discussed this with my local computer repair guy and he agrees. Some how or another I got mine working properly again and now I'm really happy with it.

Now I'm playing with power. My RAM was dying as it would BSOD once a day and my entire computer would freeze at random times. A Memtest confirmed this. So, of course, I decided to upgrade. Surprisingly, this was only $40. I also decided to take a peek at my cable "management". I try not to think about it.

Yep, DDR3 is pretty cheap at the moment. Interestingly, DDR4 is holding its price. I guess people are upgrading to DDR4, leaving a surplus of DDR3. Supply and demand etc. I also decided to take a peek at my cable "management". I try not to think about it. I'd be more concerned about the stock cooler on your FX chip. Those things are really awful, as I unwittingly found out when I bought my FX-8320. I went out and bought a Coolermaster TX3 the day after. I should have gone with the venerated 212, as the TX3 can't be positioned horizontally when mounted on an AM3+ board. But it works just fine, and my PC doesn't sound like a power tool, so I'm happy. Sorry about the gigantic pic, Proboards doesn't automatically resize things- i.imgur.com/mHky2a5.jpg

Guys, question - my sisters computer start caracking in the plastic around the screen. So the plastic frame around the screen and the lid is breaking apart, so it won't close, nor open. Is the a reason to bother to even try to fix it?

Surprisingly, this was only $40. When I built my first computer around 30 years ago, I paid $40 for (2) 4k memory sticks. Then, about eight years later I bought (2) 4meg sticks for $40. Not because I needed them, but because I couldn't pass up such a good deal. I sold one of them to a friend for $20 and never had a need for the other one. So, it didn't turn out to be such a good deal after all. Electronic equipment is cheaper in the States for some reason. I think it's something to do with your proximity to China and the buying power of America. New York is still the best place in the world to go shopping in my opinion.

Something we can all relate to is the price of gasoline. Right now I'm paying a little less than 2 USD per gallon, which is right around 50 cents per liter. What do you pay? We pay nearly twice that much where I live

What do you pay? 1 litre of petrol in the UK is about £1.00 which is about 1.4 USD, so petrol is nearly three times as expensive here. Taxes, tariffs and overall trade policies really translate to buying power and America is still a very powerful country. Another way of looking at it is that the pound is always strong (has buying power in other currencies which is good if you go on holiday a lot). It seems like everything I enjoy doing in this country is either taxed too much or illegal. The one thing you are encouraged to do is get drunk, alcohol is quite cheap.

Recently, I read in a newspaper that everything I like to do is either illegal, immoral or fattening. Therefore, I've decided to give up reading newspapers. lol !!! I'm a bit of a spider solitaire addict like your good self. Where are you from in the States? Will you be voting for Trump?

I'm not in the market for a high end graphics card. But, since you brought it up, there's a question I've wanted to ask you gamers. Can you really tell the difference between 30 and 60 fps when gaming? I've spent most of my life where, in the world of motion pictures, 24 fps meant full motion. No jitter. On the first page of this topic, I mentioned I have two graphic cards, crossfire configured. I played with the settings and when watching videos, I can't tell the difference between 30 and 60. Not only that, I took one of the cards out to test another machine. Now, I find that for watching HD videos, I can tell no difference at all, with just the single card. This same card is still available, brand new, for $30. Is your vision that better than mine? Absolutely yes. 60fps is a noticeably smoother experience in games. Make sure you watch this video in HD 60fps, and pay attention to the landscape and buildings:- Anything above 60fps is where things get more subjective and controversial. "The human eye can't see above 60fps!" is often touted, though I think what people mean to say is "60fps is flawless, anything higher is just overkill". Not to mention you need a high refresh rate monitor to even take advantage of it, and modern games require powerful hardware to run at 60fps, let alone anything higher. Some games are locked at 60fps and don't even support higher framerates. I don't fully understand the technical aspects of film and video, but film and video is different. Individual frames blur together and aren't perceptible, and there are sensible reasons why 24fps has been the standard for many many years, unless your name is Peter Jackson and you want to reinvent the wheel.

Time to overclock. A nice upgrade from my stock cooler! Nice! I would have gone with the 212 for an extra ~$5. But heck, any aftermarket cooler must be better than the one AMD gave you.
