We have a gaming area at a Laser Quest in the town near me, but that's pretty much it. Haven't been there in years (nor do I plan to go there)

^ Great build My FX-8320 serves me well, but if I was in the market for a new CPU right now I'd definitely go with Intel. It's an established fact that Intel CPUs are better for games, because reasons. Not to mention they have DDR4 support, reduced power consumption and heat output on their side. Zen might be a game changer, but we'll have to wait and see. I can understand the appeal of a small form factor build. In fact I might go down that road when it's time for my next major upgrade. I don't know a lot about that particular motherboard, but my limited experience with MSI boards hasn't been great. Once bitten, twice shy and all that. Hopefully you don't run into any issues.

I currently use a MSI mobo (which comes with a Linux distro included, surprisingly) and it works fine for a sub $100 motherboard. If I get a bad board, I can always RMA

When I first got it, I spent most of the day trying to figure out why it wouldn't POST. Turned out I had to manually set the RAM frequency and timings. Call me stupid, but that's the first time I've had to do that with a new mobo. I've had no problems since, but it made me want to stay away from MSI boards. And yes, I checked the compatibility list before buying. Your mileage may vary, of course. If you've had no such issues then I can't blame you for sticking with what you know.

I'm considering getting an R9 2/390 or GTX 970 instead of an RX 480 since they never seem to be in stock... but DirectX 12 tho.

AFAIK the 970 fully supports DX12, whereas the 290 and 390 only support some of its features. Regardless, try to be patient and wait for the RX 480 to come back in stock. It's objectively the best ~$200 card right now. Not to mention 8GB of VRAM will be useful if you get that 1440p monitor.

I'll try to be patient, don't want to miss out in the latest and greatest in price to performance. I guess I'll only get a last gen card instead if I can get one for really cheap, as a lot of people seem to be selling their cards to get a 480/1080/1070

There's currently a really good deal for a GTX 970 ($175), sooooo tempting...
Now they're selling the more powerful RX 480 for $170 on sale lololol
